"The Jihad" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 1

Comments

William Terry

Great reacts bunny, especially the tie in to Mass Effect it sounds like a game I would love to watch you play again. Although not as close a match I saw "Jihad" in a Suicide Squad light, with Lara the Margot Robbie/Harley Quinn character. A good episode 🇯🇴

Greg

Very good episode, one of the better ones of the TAS. I also agree that this episode reminds me a lot of Mass Effect and the Krogan. It was fun replaying the series a few years ago when the Enhanced Edition came out. And it was so great seeing baby Bunny in that clip from ME 1. :) It's a shame that the VOD for those games no longer exists. You said this really reminds me of you 'typical Sat morning cartoon' stuff, and I totally agree, and a lot of reviewers also said the same thing. The anti gravity fighting was a nice touch and I wish we had seen more of it. Great animation and banter here, and the idea of all these races working together and each having a special skill was a good plot idea. The running animation for Lara was really funny, as well as the fact she was given a Brooklyn accent. LOL BTW Bunny you said you didn't recognize the writer. Stephen Kandel also wrote the earlier story "Mudd's Passion" and worked on the two Original Series "Mudd" episodes.

Trilogian

“Jihad” in the West has been interpreted as “Holy War”, which I think is the writer’s intent here. Much more of an action episode than an intellectual one, but watching these again with Bunnytails reminds me they are big ideas in a limited format. Still good ones to come!

Skyman's Follies

Yeah, so Greg pretty much summed this one up for me and also I agree with Bunny that it has a bit of "Sat morning cartoon" feel - though I think the exception is the opening set-up. That, in NO WAY, is standard kiddie fare. A jihad and galaxy-encompassing holy war? Nahhhh, what's up, Spock? Yeah, no, this was an edgy idea even for TOS. But after that, yes, it devolves a bit to running and shooting and complete with a Scooby Doo mystery reveal at the end. But, kudos to the "X-men-like" gathering of eclectic heroes and also the variety of starships parked in orbit. Looking forward to Season 2!

Lee

David Gerrold, who wrote "The Trouble with Tribbles" and "More Tribbles, More Troubles," provided the voice for Em/3/Green (aka the bugman). He wanted to get a Screen Actors Guild card and so lobbied director Hal Sutherland for the opportunity. Sutherland was resistant at first, as the budget didn't really allow for guest stars. But since Gerrold had brought in Stanley Adams and Roger C. Carmel to voice Cyrano Jones and Harry Mudd respectively, Sutherland agreed. According to Gerrold, the fee amounted to about $75, but it was enough to get him a SAG card.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

I don’t have a lot to add about this episode. Just a nice fun action, heavy adventure. The whole “assemble the team of experts to go on a quest “trope is probably as old as fiction (I.e. the Argonauts from Greek mythology comes to mind). It was nicely done here if I was gonna complain about anything There was a little too much reliance on things that are arguably a little cliché like “the sabatoure on the team “and not one but two of the old “you go on without me moments “. Still pretty well done and entertaining.

Bunny have you seen the original willy Wonka and the chocolate factory?

Skyman's Follies

Now THAT is a good Easter egg, Lee. I was wondering while watching: “could Takei get his voice that high?, lol”. Great trivia

A fun note: David Gerrold was on set during the filming of "The Trouble with Tribbles" with hopes of playing Ensign Freeman, who played a big role in the bar fight with Scotty and Chekov. His request was denied for his lacking a SAG card. Stunt man Paul Baxley got the featured role instead, to good effect.

This happens to be my favorite episode. I found it to have a mature, intelligent and compelling storyline. Always thought that after some filling out, it would have made a memorable live action episode. The only flaw is having Kirk and Spock hogging all the action in the finale.

SuicuneSol

"Spock, how long since you've worked out in null gravity combat exercises?" "Last week with you, Captain." LOL I think there was a good foundation here, but the recycled music (which I am growing a little tired of now) and the limited animation budget made it harder to take seriously.

Hi Bunny. The more culturally accurate interpretation of the word "Jihad" is, A Holy War. Meaning, anything you do in the name of this war is justified by God.

Then there's the stock 3 or 4 monster sounds/roar/screech. Which was used on every other Saturday morning cartoon.

bunnytails

You mean the Gene Wilder one? If so, yes!

If there's any game/series I would love to replay on stream, Mass Effect would be it! Maybe someday...
