"The Counter-Clock Incident" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 2

Comments

Skyman's Follies

Verrrrrrry cool ending to a pretty good show. TAS goes out with a bang (pun intended!) and, imho, started with a bang with "Yesteryear". I think those are the 2 best episodes (with a lot of good ones in between). I don't think TAS should really being compared directly with TOS. I think this series is great as an introduction to TOS to kids before they enter their early teens where they're better able to appreciate TOS's complexities. But TAS does a great job of bridging that gap between Scooby Doo, etc and the original show. But "The Counter-Clock Incident" and "Yesteryear" both show the boundless possibilities of Star Trek and, I would argue, where any of the stories fall apart, it's not the fault of the writers, it's really the fault of the ultra-short format. TOS was ALREADY too short having to cram in Kirk's romances at lightning speed and now you have to chop that in half and try and tell a story about parallel universes intersecting through super (and reverse) novas in order to tell a beautiful morality tale about the graces of living a full life and, wow, it's like - how did DC Fontana and her team even come close??? It's just a tremendous feat and Filmation animators and our family of voice actors and writers and directors totally shined on this series given what they had to work with. Great comments and reactions on this series, Bunny, and can't wait for the movies (whenever we get to them) : )

Greg

Great episode to finish up the show. Like you, Bunny, I thought this was a strong episode that explored some really neat ideas and also gave screen time to both familiar and new characters. There's a number of serious plot holes with this one (talked about below) but I'm fully happy to put those aside and just enjoy this for what it was. First off, as I mentioned in the last feedback, Robert April was shown here as being the first Captain of the Enterprise, having supervised her construction and her first missions before (I assume) being promoted to Commodore and giving up command to Christopher Pike. Like with a lot of stuff from TAS, this was not considered canon for a long time, but recent Star Trek media has established indeed that yes, April WAS the first Captain of the Enterprise. I also find it very interesting that there's a mandatory retirement age in Star Trek. Humans live much longer then they do in our time thanks to advanced medical science, and there's been some canon cases of humans being around 140. Given that, you'd think a mandatory retirement age wouldn't be a thing. But at least in the 23rd century it is. I assume this requirement was dropped by the 24th century as I've not heard any mention of it it again. But it's fitting Starfleet Command would reconsider this in light of April helping out. Also it's really touching about the interaction with Robert and Sarah, with an actual kiss being show which was rare for cartoons of this time period. And when given the chance to stay at younger self's, the decision to go back to their 'proper' age was a really powerful one, which Robert himself comments on by saying "We lived a good and proper life." That brings up, though, the first of the plot holes -- once again the transporter is being used as a way to 'restore everyone' to how they should be. Also, there's NO way the Enterprise could handle being at those warp speeds, it would have long ripped the ship apart. The actual writer of this episode was Fred Bronson under the pen name "John Culver". Bronson used a pen name because he was NBC's publicist at the time and was concerned that it would look improper to get a screen credit. Bronson would eventually work on two Next Generation episodes. I'm still unsure as to why the second season was so short. Perhaps TAS was only ever greenlit, and therefore intended, for a single season, but they had so many good ideas they wanted to use they pushed some back to 1974. Or perhaps Filmination ran into financial issues, or something like that. If anyone does know, please let me know! This is going to be VERY rare for me to say, being the Star Trek geek that I am, but I have never watched Star Trek Continues, so doing it with you will be fun as for once it will be a first watch!

In the very beginnings in the creative process of Star Trek, there were several names considered for the captain. Robert April and Christopher Pike had their originations then before the name of Captain James Kirk. In ST: Strange New Worlds we hear from April again. This is the second time in TAS, the transporter was used to solve or undo a problem. Step in, hit CTRL Z and all is good! It became an easy solution more the once in future Trek for the writers to back (or beam) themselves out of a corner. In general, to me I noticed that Shatner sounded "flat" compared to his in the flesh self. He sounded kind of like a book on Audible, reading rather than performing. Gone were the notable Shatner dramatic....... pauses and occasional exagerated IN-flections, that he is known for. In interviews Shatner has maintained, over the years the pauses were because he was remembering his lines. Sounds like there was some truth to that. I thought Nimoy was a little drier, in his performance too. He had a subtle way of letting a little emotion slip through, that seemed to be absent in his animated character. I thought the rest of the cast did well, particularly Kelly. ST:Continues is the unofficial fifth year of the Enterprise mission, although they will revisit some of what had been done in TOS. It was said they treated TOS like Shakespeare, not in the literary sense, but it is about the charachters and the story and not the actors performing it. SInce this is a fan show, you might be able to do your reactions with the video unobscured, SInce CBS/Paramount has allowed these to remain on YouTube.

5 years later, Star Trek: The Motion Picture would come out. TAS has been a trip. It was kind of nice to watch it after so many people told me to dismiss it. Gonna miss those close-up shots on characters' eyes and faces.

Parallel universe is a cool means to escape when this one, as Woody Allen feared, expands relentlessly into nothingness. Just move to another one. Everyone de-aging brought back "The Deadly Years" as well as the Beatles in "Yellow Submarine" I would have loved to see Scheming Marlena from the previous alt universe episode "Mirror, Mirror". There's a YouTube channel that uses TAS outtakes redubbed with discussion of certain errors in philosophy, with the frequent use of half close-up and full face behind,,; one, it's destinctive, two, maybe there are unused segments out there, which could explain a sighting of TAS Chekov I thought I saw. Thanks bunny for doing a totally fantastic job on ST:TAS! Your common sense, humor, and beauty make the content you put out a must-see!

What a strong finish for the series. One could say that this set the bar pretty high for future series finales in TNG and DS9. (Not so much Voyager or Enterprise, although Your Mileage May Vary.) The Beta Niobe supernova was last seen in "All Our Yesterdays." Early in the episode, Commodore April mentions that Kirk's Enterprise was present when the star went nova. According to Memory Alpha, when AOY was remastered, they had access to Hubble Space Telescope images and corrected the nova sequence accordingly... but after watching TCCI, I wonder if Dave Rossi or someone else on his team decided to make it look like it did here, at least a little bit. I'm also looking forward to Bunny's reaction to the movies. This rewatch really improved my opinion of the animated stories (as did the TOS S3 rewatch). Perhaps Bunny will advance my appreciation for the films even further.

George Taylor

Bunny, thanks for sharing the fact that your name is April, assuming I understood you correctly. I think that is a great name for you and it fits your personality well. Looking forward to your reactions to later Star Trek shows and movies.

So the people in this universe are born old and die as infants? Does that mean that when they are "born", they climb out of their coffins and when they "die", they crawl back into their mothers' wombs? Fun episode, but a highly illogical premise. So much so, that when Alan Dean Foster wrote the novelization to this episode, he had the whole thing turn out to be an illusion crafted by a race of superbeings to test the Enterprise. Spock says the Enterprise will contact the nova in "52.3" seconds. Really, Spock? 52 POINT THREE seconds?? By the time you get that sentence out of your mouth, it's no longer true. Nice callback to "All Our Yesterdays".

I've seen ST:TAS before but it was more fun watching it over again with you, thx for doin this.

Carlos Stevens

so what's next??? The Movies or The Next Generation??? You can do both.

Carlos Stevens

ugh... really..Star Trek Continues??? Sigh... Ok... I'll walk with you on this journey.

I have one quick question, I have been following along on the YouTube version because, I no longer have access to the shows. I live in Europe now and the licensing is different. Did Bunny ever read a Niven book? If yes, what one? Just to be clear, I am looking forward to the fan productions, first because, the production value was great. There is a reason why those who created TOS were fans. Secondly because, I can watch the full episodes.

TAS is a respectful addition to the Original Series, I’ve always considered it Season 4. Counterclock Incident, like so many animated episodes, is really big ideas in a small amount of time. Im so glad you enjoyed TAS! It always kills me not to spoil and not to get judgy on later Treks (plenty of great stories, some not so great). I’ve only seen one or two Star Trek Continues, so im looking forward to being a newbie! The eps I saw were…fascinating. Hooray for the movies upcoming as well!

Mark Gosine

STC is the best, and most canon following love letter. To each his own. I'm glad I funded their production. The Doctor in the first two episodes I can do without.

Mark Gosine

So born old and grow young. Hmmm. Was it the chicken or the egg (emphasis on egg). Mork from Ork's (Mork and Mindy, circa the same time period [Robin Willaims]) alien race did the same. All in all, this was a fantastic episode, and yes too short for the concept. However, they could do this back then only in animation. Looking forward to the 13 episodes of STC. I' glad, Bunny, you decided to do this. I hope I wasn't too pushy. %).

Mark Gosine

Oh, and I just remembered that April's wife said she was the first medical officer on a warp power spaceship. Ahem, breaking canon? We know the first was a Denobulan.

Greg

I meant to comment on that in my post also but I forgot it, another non canon point.

JoeyVettes

Just asking. You saw star trek 2 and space seed together already. Will you be skipping 2 on your movie reactions? They're is only subtle differences between theatrical and directors cut. I'd explain but don't want to spoil. You be the judge.

bunnytails

I will rewatch Wrath of Khan, but I don’t know which version yet

bunnytails

A lot of people pushed for Continues, and I’m enjoying it greatly 😁

bunnytails

I am glad you’ve enjoyed TAS with me!

bunnytails

I have not read any Niven yet. I have Ringworld but I heard it wasn’t the best place to start.

bunnytails

I tried not to think too hard about how the whole death and birthing process would work here.. haha

bunnytails

Correct, my name is April! Most people call me Bunny but April works as well

bunnytails

Hopefully you can join us for the movie night when it comes to Wrath of Khan rewatch! TAS was great, thanks for joining me for it!

bunnytails

I’m glad you got something good out of watching it!

bunnytails

Continues and New Voyages are allowed to remain on YouTube as long as they are non-profit. Me putting the unobscured episodes behind a Patreon paywall would probably not go over too well.

bunnytails

You made some very good points. It’s true, even an hour episode is oftentimes just not enough time. Episodic shows can be tough when you are trying to tell such complex stories.

Lee

I'd prefer to hold Star Trek (1973) as canon over Enterprise (It's Been a Long Slog).

Lee

It's been a pleasure. Have you considered watching the director's cuts? It's essential for TMP, less so for TWOK (but still preferred).

JoeyVettes

So on the down low how was stc episode 1?
