This is a one-off reaction of a recommended Star Trek: New Voyages (Phase II) episode! After some consideration, I decided to obscure the video and audio for this episode as well as the Star Trek: Continues episodes, which will start next week. Even if I could potentially get away with showing the full episode, since they are free to view on Youtube, it still feels disrespectful to infringe on that copyright and collect money when the productions are non-profit.Anyways, here is the link to this episode so you can follow along: https://youtu.be/l4TC5wl0IzE

"World Enough and Time" - Star Trek: New Voyages - Full Reaction

I didn't know there were any Phase 2 videos to watch. I always thought it got dropped before it started. So this is a very welcome surprise.

This is my favorite single fan-made episode and even stands up as one of my favorite Star Trek episodes of any type. The guest acting and writing is phenomenal, and the pedigree of the people that contributed to this is amazing. The new Voyages series preceded Star Trek: Continues by a bunch of years and in many ways paved the way for the genre of serious Fan-made continuation episodes. I hope you enjoyed it and I'm really looking forward to watching this with you tonight.

new voyages lol ay yi yi continues? I can’t keep up

James

I didn’t there was phase 1

Skyman's Follies

holy crap... that was good (went through a couple of tissues there at the end). TV and movies are like a dream... in that sense, I can get through these alt versions of my fav show, TOS... they're not the same, yet, they are. I won't make any direct comparisons beyond that. And seeing (and HEARING) George Takei... priceless. Anyway, high praise from me for "World Enough and Time"

Greg

Wow, Bunny, this WAS a surprise! I had no idea you were doing this! I enjoyed this more then I thought I would, and like some others have said, got moved to tears more then once watching this. The writing, the sets, the overall feel of the episode REALLY got classic Star Trek and showed us what TOS could have looked like it was made with the same production quality that TNG and DS9 did from the 90's and 00's era. I agree with you Bunny just about 100 percent on what you said about this episode so no need to re-hash things there. :) I have NEVER seen this before, so it was a treat watching something new with you the first time like this. I tended to have stayed away from much fan made Star Trek production stuff cause I thought the quality would be lower...it really was NOT. I think I'm going to have to find time to watch New Voyages on my own at some point here. A few comments and observations: Besides George Takei and Grace Lee Whitney, this episode also featured the voice of Majel Barrett, who did the computer voice for many Star Trek shows and movies, so it makes sense they would ask her to record some lines for this. George Takei LOVES Star Trek, about as much as James Doohan did, and he's always happy to sign up stuff Star Trek related if it appeals to him. He's also lent his talents to a number of video games, such as Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3. It looks like that despite running from 2004 to 2016 only 10 episodes of New Voyages were made. The show was also known as Phase II, which was the name given to a proposed 'sequel' Star Trek show in the late 70's before they decided to make The Motion Picture instead, and some ideas and plots were carried forward from Phase II into later movies and shows. And speaking about new shows, George was in talks with Paramount for a while also to star in a new Star Trek show focusing on the adventures of the USS Excalibur, the ship he was assigned to command, but that never actually happened and I don't really know how far along the process actually got. It's a shame that didn't get green lit. I went to Wikipedia to get some additional information about this episode, and found all of this as rather interesting: "It was written by Michael Reaves and Marc Scott Zicree, (both of which had long careers writing for cartoons and TV shows) and directed by Zicree. The plot was based on a Sulu-centric story pitched by Reaves for the 1970s television series Star Trek: Phase II. The idea was reprised when Zicree was introduced to New Voyages by actor Walter Koenig in 2005, and Zicree offered Reaves' story to the production. Once they were interested, Zicree convinced Reaves to team up with him to co-write the actual script, and also gained the agreement of Takei to appear. Filming took place over 12 days, split between Ticonderoga, Los Angeles and Orlando. The episode was positively received by critics, who praised the story, production values and effects seen as well as the performances of Takei and Moses. "World Enough and Time" was nominated for multiple awards, both specific for web-based productions and more generally against professional television episodes. These included the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the Nebula Award for Best Script. The Nebula Award nomination caused controversy in particular due to criticism over the inclusion of an amateur production in a category for professional productions. The only award won was the 2007 TV Guide Online Video Award for Best Sci-Fi Webisode." I THOUGHT the actress playing Alana looked familiar, and I was right -- that's Christina Moses, who has starred in a number of TV shows and movies. While I thought everyone on the cast did a great job with the acting, she really stood out (along with Takei) due to her experience. There's really just a couple plot points I'd quibble on here -- how did the Enterprise manage to destroy all three Romulan ships so easily? Did they get hit at the worst time due to the new experimental weapon that caused the chain reaction? Also, Alana says to Spock at one point that she was told that he was only Vulcan on the Enterprise, which is contradicted by what Kirk says in "Journey to Babel" when they are talking about blood transfusions for Savik -- "There are other Vulcans on the ship!" So I'm inclined to say that's just a oversight. Finally, this seems to be a good spot as any to talk a bit about the Excelsior. She was the namesake of a new class of starship, designed as the follow up and the sequel to the Constitution class. No idea how many were built, but it was a LOT of them. The Excelsior Class also proved to be a workhorse -- despite the age, you STILL see some of them in service during DS9 and Voyager, some 80'ish years later. Thanks for giving us this pleasant surprise! I've not watched any Star Trek Continues either, so that also will be a first time watch with you.

Adding on to my post, I dug around a bit to find out why production stopped, and found this, again from Wikipedia: "Like all fan-films, New Voyages existed at the whim of the Star Trek franchise owners CBS (and previously Paramount Pictures), which previously tolerated the distribution of fan-created material as long as no attempt was made to profit from it. New Voyages' legal status was ultimately decided in 2016 following the release of new Star Trek fan film guidelines (in response to the Prelude to Axanar controversy) which forbid the production of all Star Trek fan series and any fan productions that included staff who had worked on or appeared in official Star Trek works. This included much of the staff and cast of New Voyages, including creator James Cawley (who cameos in the 2009 Star Trek film). Production on New Voyages was halted in response, with three episodes in various states of production left unfinished. Following this, the sets for New Voyages were licensed by CBS to serve as the Star Trek: Original Series Set Tour. " So, you CAN still made fan material for Star Trek, as long as you: 1) Do not use anybody who was involved in ANY WAY with official Star Trek productions 2) Do not charge for it 3) Understand that CBS can come in at any time and bring the ban hammer down on you.

OMG this is an amazing reaction. I took off from work to watch it, which I shouldn't have done, but I don't regret in the least. It will be a while before I can post any actual comments about your reaction. For anyone here wondering if you should watch, please yes, watch the reaction. Be sure to sync with the actual episode and/or watch the episode before watching the reaction. @bunny, one thing I really appreciated is that you were very careful to time your comments so that when you were talking about your thoughts and feelings you weren't also missing new important moments that were occurring. That's a delicate balance and you do it so well. And more importantly, it was so gratifying that you were able to appreciate the deeper aspects of this production.

YAY, What a suprise,Bunny. Or I could say Grace Lee Bunny,🐰. You have the right idea, one here and there, should you so desire. My eyes got misty on this one too, darn food replicators😇 The writing is really good as well. Glad YOU were surprised at the production and story. Realizing,of course, you have become, like some of us, a Star Trek "Oh I remember that" & " Of course, THAT planet" and so on. ST Continues is another Hot ball of Warp Drive Neutronium 😊. Please ,enjoy at your pace and leisure, I'm just glad to be along for the ride. I remember downloading these episodes on pirated Bit Torrent from an overseas conduit long ago. Sorry, I be geek, LOL. 😂. You guys take care out there. Oh, and My brother and my niece went up to see the New Voyages sets in Ticonderoga New York. James Cowley has them in a mall front. https://startrektour.com. Till next time, G.L. Bunnytails. 😊 🖖

31:26 to 31:33 how powerfully this episode connects with the human condition overall 😭

I watched these as they came out and this was always a standout episode from New Voyages! It's hard to believe these are 20 years old now 🤯 I really enjoyed your reaction, it was nice to see these again. Star Trek Continues is similar in style though the quality varies a bit between episodes. It's enjoyable and there are a few stand out episodes like this episode of New Voyages. If no one's suggested it to you, I'd also suggest adding Starship Exeter to your list of things to maybe check out down the line. Specifically the episode The Tressaurian Intersection. It takes place on one of the Enterprise's sister ships that we saw in The Omega Glory (USS Exeter). Starship Exeter was probably the first of the modern generation (2000s onward) of Star Trek fan films like New Voyages and Continues. Sadly CBS/Paramount cracked down on fan productions shortly before Star Trek Discovery aired.

For Bunny or anyone else interested in more Star Trek New Voyages, I'd recommend To Serve All My Days featuring Walter Koenig, in a very similar way that this episode starred George Takei. It also includes a very cool fan-service guest star that you might recognize from TOS. A second recommendation would be In Harm's Way, a fun episode with a great cameo from a loved TOS prior guest star and a continuation of at least two fan favorite TOS plots. It also established the actor for Desalle as a great contributor in all three episodes. Finally, I **STRONGLY* recommend avoiding their episode zero Come What May episode. They were working out the kinks and it might sour you towards the series because IMHO it wasn't very good.

James

Wow just watching continues to prepare for it didn’t know it existed and then this one dang with Sulu!! amazing production. Checkov young Sulu looked and sounded right, Scotty sounded right over the intercom - had never heard of this - great surprise Bunny!

James

If going to do them this way I’d suggest not bluring continues since the eps are on youtube lol to effectively have both going I need to have one headphone of you and the other on the episode easier if it was all avail on one source since they aren’t held by paramount those fun copywrite people

Paul Hess

Marc Scott Zicree, the mastermind behind this episode, calls himself Mr. SciFi and has for several years been doing a crowdfunded science fiction series called Space Command. On his channel he posted a writer / director commentary for World Enough and Time that makes for a good watch. The post is titled "Star Trek: Captain Sulu - Writers-Director Commentary - Full Episode!"

Paul Hess

He also wrote the creative and very notable Deep Space Nine episode called "Far Beyond the Stars" which I won't comment on here because spoilers, but you can enjoy the poetic title even on its own merits.

James, if I understand you do some editing yourself (?), what I do in this situation is just drop Bunny's video in its entirety on the DaVinci Resolve timeline, then acquire the YouTube movie video separately and drop it on the timeline as well, and then sync the two as Bunny starts. (Of course you scale the movie clip down to overlay the clip Bunny has on screen). Then I can just watch the whole thing complete (and of course its just one audio source, which solves the problem you mention). The only thing to watch out for (which happened in Bunny's 2001 video when I did this) is if Bunny does a pause during the reaction. I kept trying to match the sync at the beginning and end and couldn't figure out why, if I was OK at the start, it was out of sync at the end; until I eventually actually watched the entire reaction and saw that she had had a break in the middle. But should be pretty easy-peasy for you to do -- just download that YouTube video and drop on the timeline!

James

yes been doing some always fun- that’s the starting point like a glorified movie night. The prob is not everyone can do it. But thinking since continues was by Vic and fans to be enjoyed and not paramount wouldn’t be a need to blur

Paul Hess

I was one of the people who recommended this episode and I can’t thank you enough for introducing it to your audience. It’s lesser known and under appreciated compared to Star Trek Continues. This was George Takei’s performance of a lifetime. If you rewatch you can catch many subtle acting flairs and performance pivots as Sulu went through his emotional journey and changed throughout the episode. And of course Christina Moses was an amazing, adorable, and powerfully poignant Alana. You’d make a great McCoy! And you were wearing the color or the part. After the drugs from McCoy, Sulu was still mentally affected (he got his “sea legs” back so could leave). He was probably still high for the rest of the episode since they very quickly had the disruption attempt leaving only 30 minutes till destruction, which helps color watching his performance. The foundation of everything here is the writing. Such a tight script, so full of poetry, so powerful mirroring Shakespeare’s play. And lots of great through lines. Just two through line examples that were most obvious: - Kobayashi Maru threaded throughout - Alana telling Kirk “I could never be that brave”, and meaning it. Kirk tells her that good people never know what they’re capable of until they have to, and then later Alana saves the entire ship with her own bravery. - so many other example I like your trick for getting comfortable with the characters. I have a different approach … I know these are actors who are given a character with backgrounds and motivations to portray, but I allow them to act out their own interpretation of that character as long as they are true to the core of who the character is, and take it in an interesting direction that I like to watch. Jeffrey Quinn as Spock for instance was wonderful and true to who Spock is, but I felt it was a very different portrayal than Nimoy had for that character. Edith vs Miramanee: Paradise Syndrome is a wonderful episode, but in City On the Edge of Forever Kirk fell in love with Edith Keeler as himself, fully aware and eyes open. In the Paradise Syndrome he wasn’t really himself when he met Miramanee, and circumstances put them together under false pretenses, and then he was a different person when Spock broke him out of the Kirok mindset.

Trilogian

OK. Everybody has basically covered everything already, apart from one glaring problem with a very good script: Jim Kirk would not flirt with Sulu’s daughter. Completely out of character. First time seeing this episode, and i’m otherwise impressed!

Also very glad Bunny decided to include this!!

bunnytails

It exceeded my expectations as well!

Ohh the days of Bit Torrent. I don't miss those days hehe. You never knew if you were downloading a music video or a porn video titled "Metallica - Wherever I May Roam"

bunnytails

I will keep Exeter in mind, thanks!

Star Trek New Voyages and Continues are only able to keep their episodes up because they do not profit from them. It is free and without ads. My commentary content is not free/ads run on the videos so I must abide by fair use laws.
