Star Trek: Continues Episode 4 - "White Iris" - Full Reaction

Comments

Greg

REALLY great episode of the show, best one so far in what has been a really strong fan made series of episodes, more then I expected. I'm only afraid that the bar is being set so high in the first half that the second half won't be quite as good. But as Bunny noted there's a lot to enjoy here and it was a strong callback episode, rewarding fans of the original series and providing some closure and some resolution to unresolved issues and wounds. It's also very interesting to me that they decided to make Captain Garravak (sp?) of the Farragut a woman in this. There's really no reason they can not, as the sex was never mentioned in the original episode, but like Bunny said it didn't really feel needed, I guess they did consider that they needed one more woman in this episode from Kirk's past to round out this episode. Also I noticed the 'unique' badge which she had on her uniform front. As I recall we talked about before, it had been decided early that the badge worn on the front of the uniforms on the Enterprise was the Starfleet badge and ALL crew would have that, the only difference being the symbol that indicated what your department was (command, science, etc.) But there was one episode in TOS where this memo wasn't passed along correctly and the crew of another ship had their own badge. I don't know WHY the people who made this fan episode decided to buck tradition and go with that with the USS Farragut, but that's really the only major thing I can find fault at. We got to see more use of the early form of the Holodeck, along with Kirk realizing that a Counselor could be a good position to have on the command crew -- two things that will impact many later episodes of Star Trek. The women they got to play Kirk's past love interests were very good in their roles, acting and sounding and saying what I thought they would in those spots. And the woman they got to play Edith was a dead ringer for Joan Colllins, I thought. Great casting. Yes, I DO think there is a Nurse Chapel here -- the blonde woman with the high hair style that talks to and assists McCoy early in this episode when they are trying to heal Kirk, she's not mentioned by name. And it took Bunny a lot longer to recognize/place Edith then I thought it would, LOL But she got it in the end. This really is a great love letter to the original show and all the problems and challenges that Kirk faces that, for the most part, he has to do alone. Very strong episode all around.

I really like the hairdo of the actor who played McKenna, kind of a split with beehive and bangs that when done right is striking. It reminds me of "Carnival of Souls", as well as "Night of the Living Dead", though in those movies they use it to great effect in a horror motif. Another time a woman bought it under kirk's command was "By Any Other Name" when they squish the block containing Yeoman Thompson. Also Marta the Orion girl, Nona from the Hill people, and others. You can say Kirk wasn't in love with them but how could he have a relationship with his captain on the Farragut? Thanks bunny!

First I have to compliment you on your abilities to instantly recall past events and episodes of Star Trek. We have all seen them uncounted times, whenever a repeat aired on some station and we happened to flip by the channel while it was airing, we always had to watch. You have seen them once, and I have a feeling I wouldn't want to go up against you in a Trek trivia contest. The little girl is Sarai Duenas. She is like you a young fan of the show who feels a special attachment to Star Trek. She was able to visit the set and the cast of the show and become friends with many of them. The ST Continues cast appeared at a Comic Con in Phoenix, and they invited her to sit on the stage to appear with them. She has a YouTube channel, search for Sarai Trek. She made several episode reviews and posted the clip of her appearance on "White Iris" You can also see a clip of the Phoenix convention. She stopped posting years ago, she must be a teenager by now.

Yea , me too, Bunny. Miramane's Daughter always gets me. Glad you're enjoying ST Continues. Off to get tissues.

Stephen Marino

Is it me or did they have new camera angles in this episode? I guess the production crew was busy building more of the bridge set.

bunnytails

Did they say this girl was Captain Garrovik? Cause if so I missed that. I am pretty sure the original Capt. G was described as young G’s father.

bunnytails

I’ll never forget when they squished Thompson’s cube! 😬

bunnytails

Thanks! I actually did peek at her YouTube channel. Some of her reviews/recaps had me hollering! Very cute. ☺️

They even get better and better. You will also see a sequel episode written by a TOS alumni writer, Judy Burns who wrote the episode “The Tholian Web”, later on. The dialog in that one you’ll see exceeds any written for any of the TOS episodes you’ve watched. The stories upcoming will tug at your heart and make you think.

Respect to you for getting through this episode The Doctor is a different actor from the first couple of episodes, as the fans weren’t happy with his performance as McCoy. A little known fact here back in the day Star Trek was always being compared to British Dr Who, (I don’t know why) this was a monumental episode because the man played the minister was Colin Baker who played the 6th Dr Who. So Trek and Dr Who finally came together

Mark Gosine

I knew someone was going to beat me to the Dr. Who tidbit.

Dave, I too have been impressed with Bunny's recall. I was constantly thinking of this through this episode. Kudos bunny for such phenomenal recall. I wish I had that level of memory. If I did, the world would tremble.

Mark Gosine

Hey, Bunny, as Dave mentioned above, I am very impressed with your ability to recall the Trek trivia. I didn't cry when I watched this episode previously. I guess the stony stoicism in my male ego prevents such reckless abandon. However, watching you tear up made my emotions come to the surface. I almost had a feeling too %) . I am glad you are enjoying the 'continuing' adventures. It's a shame my daughter couldn't get into TOS. I weaned her on TNG, and she loved it.

bunnytails

Oh cool! I once tried to watch the older Doctor Who episodes, but I didn't get too far into the 1st doctor.

bunnytails

Maybe someday she will be able to go back and appreciate TOS as well!

Gary Brown

It gets even better! You’ll see. The Two-part finale is outstanding.

I am so far behind now! Just finished watching Bunnytails reaction. Not apologizing, I was BAWLING during this one.
