Star Trek: Continues Episode 6 - "Come Not Between the Dragons" - Full Reaction

Comments

Greg

Well, I had already finished watching Episode 7 before you fixed this and then posted this episode, so it's all good! I'll just wait till next week to share my thoughts about that one, LOL First off all, I'm very sorry about what happened to your father. To think he was younger then me when you lost him is heartbreaking, and thank you for being willing to open up and share a part of your inner self with all of us at the end like that. And that ties in very well with the overall theming of this episode (and why it induced strong feelings like that in you, and among other people as well I'm sure). This was kind of a confusing and weird episode, but was very well done with new ideas and concepts as we have come to expect from these really well done fan made episodes. It's not really clear what happened between this father and son alien, but the Enterprise took a risk in even getting involved with this. (That also helps explain where the title came from). Kirk realizing that for once his silver tongue wasn't helping and turning the mic over to the Ensign who HAD bonded with the baby alien was really well done, and one could hope the words did actually help to make sure this doesn't happen again. Agree there was a lot of fighting going on in this episode! Good stunt work here again for people not used to doing this on a regular basis. All Starfleet officers go through basic self defense courses so they all know how to fight to a degree, but clearly some are going to be better then others when it comes to that. I found it interesting that they mentioned the loss of the Constitution class ship Lexington toward the start of the episode. I've never seen, and don't think one exists, of an 'official' canonical list of how many Constitution class ships were built. My BEST guess is about a dozen. They were not the only class of ship in use by Starfleet at this time (we've already seen a Miranda class ship, and we will see another class in the movies) but these are the 'best' ships of the fleet, the top of the line, so the loss of each one hurts. I'm glad they seem to be giving Counselor McKennah a lot of screen time -- I was worried they were just going to brush her off or leave her totally out of some episodes. Instead they seem to be trying hard to work her into the series, which I'm glad for as she seems like a good actress and a good character -- and easy on the eyes to boot, LOL So this one was not my FAVORITE so far, but a strong and powerful episode that clearly hit home with some folks. I've always liked how Star Trek is not afraid to explore new or controversial topics and make you think about things again, perhaps in a new life. (And since I watched the next episode also already, I can say that applies to next week as well!)

A great review Bunny! You hit the nail on the head. 😊👍

Gary Brown

The loss of the two ships tie into the upcoming episodes. Stay vigilant and you’ll see how it relates.

Alex Pavellas

It took me about half the episode to realize that Eliza was Chiana from Farscape!

Mark Gosine

Oh, man. I didn't see it!

Mark Gosine

I really appreciate the practical effects in this episode. Like they'd would have done in the original. Acting was great. Direction was great.

William Terry

Thanks bunny for your emotional reaction. Good that you're dealing with things most of us have in our lives. I had a little trouble keeping score on this episode; re good guys/bad guys. I think maybe a rewrite was in order, although plausibility aside it's fun watching the officers getting punched. I'm interested what was going on in the turbo lift when the women got off to go have a drink, sexual harassment?! And this behavior was before Usio caused everyone to have another ship wide breakdown. I'm surprised the term is "shift" when I assumed they would call it "watch" like Gene Roddenberry intended IMHO. They are good at getting a true sixties look. The muumuu on Taylor was beautiful and the style was popular in the era. That said, bunny is lovely 😍 and Captain Bunny dressing down Taylor about reporting what she saw is great.

Greg

Watch is the correct term -- the military uses watch, and Star Trek was based heavily off military rules and regulations, etc. I'm guessing the people who made STC used shift cause it was more 'relatable' to the audience watching the show. Starfleet USUALLY keeps a 8-8-8 rotation -- eight hours on, eight hours off, eight hours for sleep. There have been times when this has been changed, but most officers are used to this. Where it gets interesting (IMHO) is the various alert conditions. As I recall what happens canonically is that if Yellow Alert is called, anyone who is off shift (but NOT on a sleep shift) is required to report to their stations. If Red Alert is called, EVERYONE is up and at them.

I am loving your reactions to these episodes, Bunny. I consider them to be canon. More importantly, so does Rod Rodenberry, Gene's son. He said of Star Trek Continues after attending a screening at Las Vegas in 2014: "I do have to say, and I said this after 'Lolani', I'm pretty damn sure my dad would consider this canon. The fact that you do stories that mean something, that have depth, that make us all think a little bit, I really think he would applaud you guys, and I applaud you guys. And, as far as I am concerned, it is canon. So thank you."

Your doing an amazing job at analysis of these episodes, that even myself an seeing them in a different light. After you’re done the movies I real wished you would consider do a left turn next, as your in the early star fleet days and Do ENTERPRISE next , The pioneering first journeys of Starfleet. STTNG will loose you for 3 years. at one per week.

William Terry

Nice to see the ship's councilor is given a high rank on TOS Universe. Odd that there's a Ten Forward, since the USN that Roddenberry served was dry for decades. Hence you got CMO keeping Saurian Brandy for medical purposes and the Chief Engineer smuggling Scotch into his quarters.

Greg

I mean, HOW many times do we see officers winking at the consumption of Romulan Ale? LOL

bunnytails

Yes, agreed! Practical effects are always a welcome sight~

bunnytails

I feel like the people would revolt if I didn't get right to TNG. Even after promising I'll do it after the movies, I still get people angry that I'm not already doing it!

RebRox65

I understand, just a shame as you’re in the ball park so to speak.

Gary Brown

Well, by you watching everything in sequence, you have a much better appreciation for the entire canon of Star Trek. Of course, the series Enterprise prequels everything you’ve watched so far.

Dave Harrison

The way the aliens showed emotions through the changing colors reminds me of the Ohmu from Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaa film. Perhaps a source of inspiration for the writers/directors.

Arriving so late, but just finished watching this one. Very heavy issues. My dad was never abusive or self destructive, but he was strict, just like his dad was. I miss him because we shared so many interests and he laughed at my jokes. STC is really strong, and I can’t wait to watch the rest and your interview! A virtual hug back to you, Bunny, and many thanks!
