Star Trek: Continues Episode 7 - "Winds of Change" - Full Reaction

Greg

I actually watched this last week when it was originally posted, so my thoughts are a little shorter then I might make. (Perhaps some of you might see that as a blessing, LOL) Taken on the heels of the last episode, this is a strong and powerful 'sequel' to that one. I love how the writers decided to go back to one of the most controversial episodes of TOS and tackle the issues head on. It makes total sense that while there would be no 'official' reason a woman couldn't command a Constitution class starship there would be other factors at play, such as the complaints of one of the founding races of the Federation. The Federation at this time was no where near as organized, as structured, or as powerful as we see it in later shows. A spark like this could provoke a major internal crises (coming on the heels of other things which have happened in STC) that would actually split the Federation apart. Again, without spoiling anything, we see the Federation put under MAJOR strain in later shows (far worse then anything here) and the member races recognize the old American saying of 'United we stand, divided we fall' and hang in there, and don't let anything split them apart. As always politics is a beast that must be handled with great care. Really strong acting on this one, and I enjoyed the split scenes between what happened on the starbase and what was going on with the Enterprise. I love seeing Checkov get promoted, and the crew willing to bend orders and rules to try to save people. It was also SUCH a tease for them to change things when Kirk would have had to make his decision on who was most fit to command the Hood. I agree that he would have picked Spock, as much as he would have hated to lose his first officer. Something that we see in later shows is that yes, it IS possible for a first officer to pass over the command of a ship if they wish. I BELIEVE Spock could have still refused, but as this show is not canon I can't say with 100 percent accuracy. And speaking of the Hood, that's the major thing I dislike about this episode -- why go through all the hassle of meetings and a formal tribunal to decide the new Captain BEFORE the ship was safe? Get the girl back to base first, THEN decide all this. You just wasted a lot of time and effort, and put a lot of stress on people, for something that ended up being un needed. It just seems like the wiser course of action would to be to get the ship home, inspect and repair her, and THEN decide the new crew. I do wish they had explained what happened to the Hood, but I'm okay with that question being left unresolved due to time reasons. Finally, yes, Bunny, we will see women in command of starships (and other ships) in later shows, as you already know. I understand why one wasn't done in TOS (it was just impossible due to the societal forces at work in the 60's). But I really like how the writers for this episode both tried to expand and explain that in the context of the 21st century. While I have issues with HOW things were done, the overall IDEA and THEMES here were REALLY solid and VERY well done.

This episode has an Easter-egg for the two finale episodes.

I heard the quote by the Tellarite as "The verily of a women is as good as the verily of a lord." meaning you can trust the accuracy of one as much as the other. Good episode! I have a recommendation for when they are evaluating you for a command post and ask you a legitimate question-don't take the 5th! Bunny knew something looked suspicious. The Hood was the same name of a ship in World War II that famously blew up.

Romulan ale; a great tonic for soothing the nerves.

Great episode, Bunny. I must confess a secret crush on Commodore Gray...as Wilma Deering of Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century TV series. So nice to see her in Star Trek 😁 🍿 ❤️

Another classic Trek examination of a hot button issue without really taking any sides. For me I can still have empathy, but it boils down to 'two wrongs don't make a right'. Ok nerds. We aren't talking negative numbers here. As -1*-1=1, but If False AND False Then False. Let's not quibble about the probabilistic resources of the universe, nor inject M theory. Garret should get it if she merits it. It helps that it rhymes. I guess my viewpoint is beyond the rabble (said in jest) when I view a new person I meet as a blank slate; until they prove otherwise. It grinds my gears when someone wants to ignore immutable facts over feelings.

This episode had me guessing all the way through about several things and how they were going to play out. When I first became aware of Star Trek Continues over ten years ago, I barely paid any attention. Without any serious investigation, I just decided it wouldn't be any good and would not approach TOS standards. Quite the mistake. Now, I am watching all these for the first time and surprisingly enjoying them. Thanks to you Bunny!!

There is a clip of music they always played when Kirk was giving his big inspirational speeches at the end of the episodes. I thought it was so cool that they gave the speech and the audio cue to the Commander. Something I just found out, the actor that played Commodore Grey was the same actress that played Wilma Deering in Buck Rodgers. One other quick note: Some of the things you are not getting are not from TNG but from the J.J. Abrams movies. At some point, after you get passed the TNG movies, you should think about doing the J.J ones. The first was fantastic. The others were not as bad as many remember them to be. They might work for a regular movie night.

During the clash with the Bismark -- a salvo from the German ship managed to penetrate through the thin armor and hit a magazine, blowing up the ship. Even the Germans were shocked to see the 'Mighty 'Ood' blow up instantly like that. There were only 3 survivors from the Hood.

Interesting! Fun to know where they got the name for The Hood!

I've seen many comments of people who had the same crush!

bunnytails

Yeah, we could check those movies out at some point :D

Oh, this is killing me. You crew has covered most of the bases. I was worried this episode was going to be really preachy, but it fell in line with the spirit of TOS. Everybody had a crush on Erin Gray. I wanna dish on Trek you won’t see for a while, but I wont say a word. I loved Chekov’s promotion!
