Star Trek: Continues Episode 8 - "Still Treads the Shadow" - Full Reaction

I really enjoy how STC is using a lot of 'sequel' ideas from TOS for their episodes. I'm sure some people don't enjoy that, and if this was a 'canon' show I'd feel differently. However, for a fan made show like this, made by and produced by and written by fans of Star Trek, I totally love the concept of them going into the well from TOS and digging out very good ideas and 'what ifs' and all that we thought about when watching the TOS episodes. Good episode here -- one of the stronger ones for execution of the idea and acting. I agree Bunny this is a dark and depressing episode. However that just makes it hit home all the harder. According to the official sites I could find, Kirk was 32 when TOS started -- at the time he was the youngest Captain in the history of Starfleet. Since STC is taking place during the 'forth year' of the five year TOS mission, that makes Kirk 36 when this episode happened, and thus he was 35 when he got split and tapped on the Defiant. So if he was 'awake' about 60 of the 200 plus years that he was on the Defiant he'd be around 96 -- indeed, still very sharp of mind and body, but Star Trek has shown the human age was advanced so that living to be 150 is possible now. Tholian Web was a really interesting concept of a episode that was marred by a few issues, but I agree it was one of the episodes that was most ripe for a re-visit, so I'm glad they did so here. Yes, as far as I'm aware the girl is new -- I don't recall seeing or hearing her before. It sounds like the two of them were childhood friends back in Iowa and perhaps something more (Kirk always WAS popular with the ladies) but they decided to go live their own lives. I can't recall if we've SEEN a Pattern Enhancer used in a TOS episode right now -- I WANT to say yes but I wouldn't bet my life on it. The one the older Kirk uses on her to get back to the Enterprise is of a new type -- a small portable device compared to the bulky devices which are used usually. Just in case we haven't seen a Pattern Enhancer before, it does what the name implies -- enhances a signal so that a transporter can lock onto it. Regarding the different badge that old Kirk had on his uniform -- I recall saying something about this before, but don't know how long it's been. It looks like old Kirk decided to replace his badge with the Defiant's one since he saw himself of 'that' ship now that he was trapped on it. However, the whole 'different badges for each ship' thing was a mistake. Roddenberry and the staff ALWAYS intended that the Starfleet insignia that we know and love would ALL be used by Starfleet officers, with the symbol in the center showing what kind of officer you were (Command, Science, Medical, etc.) However, when the third season TOS episode "The Omega Glory" was written, that instruction wasn't passed on correctly to the wardrobe department and thus they made a different badge for the crew of the Exeter. It was a mistake that was not repeated in any other episodes of any other series (unless it was a Mirror Universe episode or something else strange.) However, for SOME reason the people making STC decided to keep that idea of 'different badges for each ship' idea going, as they did this in a past episode also. Considering how close they TRIED to follow the flow and the style of TOS, I'm really unclear as to why they did this. Looks like just 3 episodes left and I know you said you finished watching this already, so looking forward to seeing the rest and enjoying my first watch of these alongside you Bunny!

Interesting episode, but of the 11 would be my least favorite.

I am enjoying the guest appearances from actors from other notable sci-fi series in this. Rekha Sharma played Tory in Battlestar Galactica.

Older Kirk's insignia is that of the USS Defiant.

Stephen Marino

From my perspective, that was the weakest of the episodes. I get that it clicks for other people. Those other people are not me.

I do believe the insignia thing may make more sense by the end of this series.
