Star Trek: Continues Episode 9 - "What Ships are For" - Full Reaction

Greg

This was my first time watching this episode as well (as it is for the whole series!) so it's been great watching along with you. Really good episode, and I agree with all of the points and observations that you made on it. A unique premise with the idea of a world that can't see in color and has 'invaders' without even knowing it, and about the Prime Directive and how Kirk (and others) have bent the rules some in order to do what is the 'right' thing. I had no idea John de Lancie guest started in this episode! He's a great actor and he's done a lot of Star Trek -- I'll just say that you'll see him later on in future shows. Also I recognized Anne Locket -- yet another girl from a past sci-fi show, in this case Battlestar Galacitca. Classic Enterprise policy with the solution -- "We've given you all of the tools you need to solve your issues, it's up to you if you can or not." It would be interesting to see what they ended up doing in the end. I'm glad to see that they nailed Kirk so well in the series. All of the regulars are great, but Vic really nails Kirk to a T. His sharp mind, his quick wit, his effective speeches, and his love for the ladies, LOL Interesting how they brought up Nurse Chapel here. I don't think cannon wise it's ever been said what she did after her time on the Enterprise, but I like the idea of her continuing to advance the ranks in medical. I also was not sure how the title of this episode impacted the show. I'm not sure it's a GREAT title, but hey, it works. I did a Google search looking for where that quote came from and found this: "The quote "A ship in harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for" is most famously attributed to John A. Shedd. According to Wikiquote and other sources. It's important to note that it has also been misattributed to other figures, like Rear Admiral Grace Hopper and William G. T. Shedd, but the original source is generally considered to be John A. Shedd." John Shedd was a late 19th/early 20th century businessman and one of the first presidents of the store chain Marshall's. My guess is he said that quote in terms of business -- that you need to take risks to prosper and not be 'safe' all the time. So what did you decide to do with the two partner that finishes the show? Finally, I had a good laugh with the blooper at the end that you included. :)

Great reacts and a pleasant change s3eing bunny go monochrome in pace with the episode. Btw there's numerous instances where ships in harbor did not prevent them getting *****. Maine, Arizona, L'Orient...

I think this was the most unique episode STC has done. There were no ties or updates to anything from TOS so it can stand on its own. (other than a patented Captain Kirk speech) I'm going to bite my tongue, on saying much more, because as many of us know, a key item, for you, has been introduced, that you will appreciate later.

Thaius: (to Spock) "You're ... different.. from the others. Are you an Earth female?" As Bones works desperately to stifle a huge outburst of laughter, Spock explains to Thaius. Then we get a response from Bones: "If our human females looked like THAT, we'd go extinct." Typical Bones haha. Bunny, you went monochrome on us for a while! That was different. Kinda neat too, and all in keeping with the nature of this particular episode. Another terrific STC episode btw. You've got me watching these for the first time ever. They are really enjoyable and always seem to give me great TOS vibes. The people that put STC together did an incredible, amazing job!!

I think this is another classic Trek episode. I have a better name, "Kicking some Hyleni". Funny, De Lancie, who I met in 2019 in Vegas, looked younger than this installment of STC. I was getting his autograph for my daughter - she loved his NextGen stuff but mostly his My Little pony voice work (Don't ask I have no Idea... really) He saw me examine the photos. I was trying to decide which my daughter would like the best. He came around and pulled me aside and told me the whole story about the photo I was opting for. Great story about how he'd been awake for 36 hours and just arrived in Germany on a flight. They dragged him right over to a photo shoot. He thought, "This will turn out to be crap! I'm sooo tired." But the photos turned out great to his surprise. I was a bit taken aback he was so personable to me. "Please sign 'to Amanda'.", I said and thanked him.

Great story! I also had the pleasure to hear him speak at a con circa 1994. This being my first one, I WOEFULLY underestimated how expensive things would be and didn't have money to buy a photo for a photograph. Lesson learned -- any future con I attended I brought double the planned money, LOL.

I don't know if books count for spoilers. If yes, please ignore the reply to this post. If not, I think it might have value.

William Shatner wrote a series of Star Trek books that are as un cannon as you can get. In one of them, he encounters the species that spread humanity all over the stars and preserved species that were facing extinction. When he tried to explain the Prime Directive to them, they got angry. "How dare you not interfere! James T. Kirk, that is why we created you." In that book, Kirk was every bit as much engineered as Khan, just by aliens who were better at the job than humans were.

As Bunny has done TMP I can say, Nurse Chapel is Dr. Chapel in the first movie. My mother was so angry about that. "There is no path for a nurse to become a medical doctor. They are completely different career paths." I remember explaining to her as a kid, "Mom, that takes place 400 years in the future give or take. Four hundred years ago, there was no such thing as a medical degree. To be a doctor, you just started treating people. Why would anyone think that medical education would be the same 400 years from now?" I came so close to being grounded for a month for that comment.

bunnytails

Ohhhh!!! He was one of the antagonists in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic called "Discord"! I watched and loved about 5 seasons of that show! Very cool to see him in this episode!

bunnytails

Woah, sounds really strange! I may have to check those out someday

So far behind, but so glad to get back to Bunnytails and STC! I loved the shift to monochrome, and when it went back to color, I had to back up to see Bunnytails red come back! Too much to go into, and several people have covered things, gotta say Ann Lockhart was awesome in Battlestar Galactica! Many thanks to Bunnytails for introducing an old Trekkie to really good Trek I’d never seen before! Also, I read John Varley along with many other sci-fi authors with varying degrees of success!
