Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - Full Watchalong

Comments

Summer

Yay!

Matt B

The Wrath of Khan brought me to tears, The Voyage Home had me excited to no end with the biggest smile, The Search for Spock had me both smiling and in tears. Jim Kirk went to hell and back, lost his ship and just as importantly his son, because the souls of his two best friends needed him.

William Terry

The Klingon ship looks great, I love the Klingons wth Christopher Lloyd as Kruge. They fixed David, mostly the sweater lolol. Very sad to see him die. Bunny's enthusiasm and love of Star Trek is on full display! I noticed that she went quiet for stretches of time, which I think points to a problem with STIII: TSFS, mainly an overly complicated plot and the need for exposition, to bring it to the finish line, a completely normal Spock from whatever they scooped out of the Enterprise engine room. Thanks bunny for reacts on a great movie!

She finally knows what happened next

Sarek “but at what cost? your ship, your son”

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

A lot gets made of the "odd number curse" but honestly I think that TSfS is a little underrated. I could pick nits about a couple of things, Kruge is a little cookie cutter, it's a bit draggy in places, but overall I really enjoy it. The three-way friendship continues to hit hard, stealing the Enterprise is fun, lots of that certain flavour of wry Star Trek humour. As always, enjoyed the reaction and see you in TVH.

During the writing process the Klingon knife went back and forth between David and Saavik. The decision was controversial but Nimoy felt choosing David made for better drama.

You'll love the next one lol. A lot of people consider this one of the bad odd-numbered movies, but a lot of genuine drama happens here. I do think the portayal of David's death is a little underwhelming. "David is dead," said Saavik. On top of Saavik's Vulcan-like delivery and David mostly dying off-screen, we don't really feel the weight of his death until Kirk repeats "you killed my son" three times. I also feel Kruge--while surprisingly formidable--was essentially a fool who didn't know he had already lost. If the Genesis weapon actually worked and was in danger of being taken, the stakes would have been much higher. Instead, Kruge ends up being more of a nuisance than a genuine adversary.

Skyman's Follies

I just love this movie. I think it often lies hidden under the bigger shadows cast by TWOK and the TVH, but it’s so good in so many departments and I think the few flaws that it does have aren’t really any larger than the flaws of its siblings. I’m probably in the minority saying that, but re-watching it here in the live stream reminded me just how strong the good parts are: the acting, the music, the twin gut punches of losing the David and the Enterprise, the absolutely understated brilliance of the scene between Kirk and Sarek, and the stirring ending, certainly a mirror reflection of the ending of TWOK, but this time, a joyous rebirth instead of a death. Pretty sure the heavyweight and downright grim issues of the plot necessitated an injection of plenty of humor - much more than the previous two movies. This resulted in a big tone shift and I certainly hope Bunny gives this one a second watch someday where I think it will pay off more. Anyway, great reaction Bunny- I think we’ve shed at least a couple tears for three movies straight so far- will the Kleenex hold out for the fourth? ☺️

Some people are saying with respect to the TOS movies “ odd numbers bad, even numbers good” but I’ve always felt that this one flies against that. You’re definitely going to like 4. It’s one of the best.

Michael R

Bunny, I have loved revisiting this movie experience with you. You have such a deep and meaningful love for all these characters and it's just a joy to take this journey with you. I look forward to IV and beyond....

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I agree. There are small critiques to me be made of both TMP and TSfS but I think they're both better than folk give them credit for. TFF is the only real rough one and I think that kinda colours our opinions of the others. And even it has it's good moments.

InfinitelyJesting

Pretty bad movie but always fun to watch it with you.

RebRox65

With the movies, Star Trek 4 and 6 have become my favourite ones to watch.

Mark Gosine

All I can say is I love my Kruge Taco Bell commemorative glass. But really. The Enterprise is a character in its own right. So, yes, it was emotional for everyone when it was destroyed. In the theater, I was stunned.

bunnytails

Nah I think this was a great movie! Not perfect, for some of the reasons you stated, but still really good!

bunnytails

Losing the Enterprise really was like losing a dear friend.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

6 fucking slaps. 2 and 6 are like a 1A and 1B situation for me. The tiebreaker probably goes to 2 but, man, it's close.

Derek Orr

Bad? It’s one of the absolute best and finest Star Treks ever made

Derek Orr

Honestly 4 doesn’t really hold up as well as this. 4 is just too much silly

Derek Orr

They are decent but too much pew pew action stuff and not enough cerebral trek like TMP or character trek as in 3

PianoDean

I really don't know why III gets some heat....I loved it and always thought it was great. In some ways it's my favorite. It was a lot of fun to relive it through your eyes.

Gregory Middleton

I’m a bit behind on your journey. Loved seeing/sharing your Wrath of Khan reaction. So emotional when you’ve grown up with those characters. Just about to start your Search for Spock !

Grey Invader

Lots of tears in this one. Death is part of the continuing Human Adventure. One of my favorite Trek films in hindsight. Not sure why the odd numbered ones get such a raw deal. They're all good, if not GREAT. REMEMBER...

bunnytails

I can understand the feelings about TMP and TFF, though I wouldn't call either of them bad movies myself. This one, though, I am not sure I understand why anyone would say it is bad!

Sean Ellingham

IIRC, the novelisation tells us why Uhura doesn't go with the crew - she's using her skills to cover their activities for as long as possible, and then hindering Starfleet's response as they escape. When she can't do any more, she beams to the Vulcan embassy where Sarek gives her asylum - this is how she gets to Vulcan without being captured.

bunnytails

Ahh, feel like I should probably read that sometime!

Trilogian

It was so much fun to see Search for Spock with Bunnytails! When I was younger, I felt disappointed it wasn’t Wrath of Khan again, but every time I see it now, I appreciate it more and more. Not the biggest James Horner fan, but his score for Trek 2 and 3 are brilliant. Looking forward to Voyage Home and more, and then TNG. Thanks to Bunnytails for this continuing mission!

I've always really liked this one! It didn't get the level of praise I thought it deserved, b/c admittedly, Wrath of Khan was a very tough act to follow, and many felt the ending was too anti-climatic. But for me, the ending was super emotional, b/c Spock was back! I, like many, cried at the end of the prior movie when I first saw it; his death was gut wrenching for me (just as Leonard Nimoy's death was when we lost him back in 2015)... Interesting story. Nimoy was asked why he cast Christopher Lloyd as Kruge. He himself had always felt typecast by Hollywood, as no one wanted to cast him b/c they felt audiences would only see "Spock" on the screen. Lloyd had similar issues, b/c he was so freaking brilliant as Jim on the series Taxi. Nimoy really hated that, b/c he rightly felt it was beyond unfair to punish an actor just b/c they are brilliant and memorable in a popular role, as Lloyd and he were. He said Lloyd nailed the audition, and against the wishes of the studio execs, he cast him. I'm so glad he did!

MertzRocks

"Too much silly"... Like The Squire of Gothos, TTW Tribbles, I Mudd, A Piece of the Action, Assignment: Earth, Spock's Brain... 🤣 Those hold up just fine and this doesn't... 🤔 It does, it's just a bit dated. You can't appreciate Trek at its silliest? (Please reply: "The Hell I can't..." (JK)) 😜 🤘😎🎸

Still catching up on the full reactions. This is still the most underrated Trek of all time. It's definitely bitter sweet tough with the Enterprise and David. I think I said this on YT but I really think they needed to pay a steep price to make the return of Spock an earned reward. One of your best reactions Bunny!
