Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - Full Watchalong

Comments

Bret Kay

Before watching your reaction: I've always enjoyed Star Trek V. It's the first Star Trek I saw in the theater. My mom took me to see it and I still have the collector's pin from it. There's some elements of the story I wish had been different, but I like the focus on characters and family, especially between Kirk/Spock/McCoy. It'll always be a good memory for me :) I hope you enjoyed it!

Bret Kay

I agree - the biggest weakness is the tone is all over the place. The humor is out of place, over the top, or slapstick at times, which is quite different from other Star Trek. And sometimes the characters don't act like themselves (Kirk bickering with Spock in the brig for example, the romance between Scotty & Uhura, etc.).

Mark

You are right to say there was missing or more was going to be added, at the same time this was being made, the next generation was also in production, so this was almost a B movie budget, cheers

SuicuneSol

I sincely apologize, but I'll probably wait for the YouTube cut. I really don't want to watch Star Trek V again. >.<

Summer

The next one hopefully is better. Your opinion of this is right

NateWiz

yep the tone is goofy

Mark Chrisco

Shatner tried to one up Nimoy by both writing and directing. He hired a 4th rate special effects house and didn't listen to those around him regarding the deficiencies in the story he came up with. That's the reason Harve Bennett failed to return for the last feature.

bunnytails

It does have some good moments, for sure :)

bunnytails

Yeah, things felt a bit strange at times for sure

Dave Riley

Sybok was originally planned to be played by Sean Connery, but he wasn't available due to being in Indiana Jones. Laurence Luckinbill has interesting connection to Star Trek. He is married to Lucie Arnaz, daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, whose production company Desilu made Star Trek. Ball as president gave the green light to produce Star Trek. The Star Fleet official we saw on the viewscreen giving the orders for Enterprise to go to Nimbus III was Harve Bennett. "God" was played by George Murdoch who was the doctor on the original Battlestar Galactica. As far as groaners go, one was Spock and his "marsh mellons" there are several rumors about how marshmallow became marsh mellons. Another groaner is the turbolift shaft scene with the 78 decks, including going past deck 52 twice on the way up. I don't believe Enterprise ever had anything close to 78 decks.

Eric Rinehart

Hopefully overall had a good experience with the film looking forward to the next watchalong on the 8th in upcoming Saturday

James

“you guys hate the one william shatner directed?” yep ‘fraid so lol. I thought because you love ST so much you might enjoy it more but lol we finally got one right as a group. Its still orig cast movie but it just doesn’t have the quality that 2,3,4, and 6 do. The Motion picture gets bogged down in length but the girl Ilia even bald was still so pretty its kind of hypnotic but this was a dud not on the repeat list like the others

James

it is a ton better

My thoughts on Star Trek V: Go climb a rock. In all seriousness, the one question I wanted to know the answer to never got an answer. "What does God need with a starship?". Not long after that, the movie became an action packed sequence of Kirk vs rocks and Sybok and Spock vs God! I like the ending with the campfire song and some of the attempts at humor were actually funny so I can't entirely hate on this movie. Spock really can carry a tune when he's not trying to comprehend the meaning of the lyrics. Last paragraph, the good news for you Bunny is that I think you'll enjoy ST 6 much more than this one. Maybe not as much as 4 (there's no whales ☹️) but still a good flick. Looking forward to watching it with you this Saturday!

Carlos Stevens

Um Bunny... YES! you've seen a Vulcan with a beard... Do you not remember Mirror World Spock??? It's like such a meme.

Carlos Stevens

"Headin' Out Toooooo Eden... Yeah Brother... Headin' Out Toooo Eden... Yeah Brother... No more trouble in my body or my mind. Gonna live like a king on whatever I find... Eat All the fruit and throw away the rind... Yeah Brother..."

Carlos Stevens

Yeah Bunny... You got it... After Star Trek 3/4 This movie didn't quit rise to the level of a Star Trek movie.

Summer

Watched 4 again, I think Shatner made the mistake Kirk did in 2 becoming Admiral, Shatner is a good actor but this movie was a step far

bunnytails

What do you mean no whales!? hehe :)

bunnytails

Well yeeeeeeeaaaah but I dunno if that counts!! :P

James

He survived. He was ok lol

David Wayne Fox

I haven't watched your reaction... I will also probably wait for the YouTube cut. In 1989 I actually read the novel before seeing the film, and was underwhelmed by it but I thought here is a chance to do some pretty spectacular special effects sequences. Alas, I remember sitting in the theater with my jaw hanging open at how bad the effects were, and how clumsy the whole "God" sequence was. It ruined the movie for me even though it has a few good scenes. I also thought it was out of character for any of the original crew to follow Sybok no matter what pain he released from them. It has a nice Jerry Goldsmith score, but that's pretty much the best I can say for the film.

bunnytails

I won't spoil too much but I also felt something felt off about how some of the characters were acting in this one. I also agree there are some really nice scenes :)

Grey Invader

I like it, but don't love it. It's very clunky compared to the rest of the movies that came before. Definitely a weird vibe. It has grown on me over the years...like a fungus.

bunnytails

Weird vibe is what I was feeling for sure.

Silverstrike

I am glad you watched this movie. This movie is my first intro to the original series. I was watching tng first when I was a kid of course and my dad bought Star Trek 5 and I was like cool a movie with Picard! Then I saw these other people and in my kid mind I was like wait, where’s Picard. And my dad said that this was the captain before Picard. And his name was Kirk. Then I watched this movie with him and it was and to this day one of my favorite Star Trek movies. Everytime I watched it I watched through the credits. I loved the way they did the songs.

Desmond

You're right. There is something very strange about the tone of this movie. Almost like whoever wrote it doesn't understand Trek or these characters. At all.

Desmond

...and yes, it's a BAD movie. No need to sugarcoat it. :D Easily the worst film with the original crew.

Anthony Goodwin

The admiral that spoke to Kirk on the viewscreen is Harve Bennett, producer of the movie and the previous three movies.

Trilogian

We came off of Trek 2, 3, and 4, and Trek 5 had big shoes to fill. It didn’t. But it had it’s moments. I’ve got nothing against Trek 5, it’s just not a real contender. Bunnytails has a steel trap mind! I loved all the refs to TOS (Adam, The Way to Eden, Operation Annihilate, etc). The biggest thing that bugs me is Kirk’s brother George’s death is dismissed. Never quite understood that. Trek 5 had a lot of SFX and production problems, too. That’s what happens when you don’t use Industrial Light and Magic!

Shatner was defintely trying to channel a Star Wars style action-adventure in this one... pretty unsuccessfully. Speaking of Star Wars and Star Trek mixing, here is another video for you... this is Shatner at his most Shatneriffic! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEZVwQptvWw
