Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Probs not one of my favourites but solid enough. Getting introduced to a new villainous alien race is cool and it's a good chance for us to get see what a stand-up guy Riker is. Can't watch right now but excited to check out your reaction when I'm done work, B, and as always can't wait for the next one🖖

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

A fair episode. Realty only notable for introducing the Ferengi. As you correctly picked up on Bunny it’s pretty formulaic. you seem to already know the Ferengi will reappear, so I guess that’s not a spoiler issue for you. I won’t give any more away other than to say they are still very much a work in progress at this point. They eventually fill an interesting role in the Trek universe, Thankfully, they tone down some of the “hyperactive monkey” thing. (Your “audition “ made be LOL 😆) The Portal guy comments on the contrasting thoughts of Riker and the Ferengi so presumably he is telepathic and that’s how he know Rikers name and the Sun Tzu quotes. The Chinese finger puzzle thing isn’t terribly profound or subtle as a metaphor but kinda cute in a way. For me the joke doesn’t land as well as I think the writers were hoping for but it’s fine. I’m a little skeptical that a super intelligent android with incredible physical dexterity and spatial awareness (remember him putting the chips back into the computer a few episodes, while “drunk” no less) would have that much trouble with one. I had forgotten how often weird gender role stuff comes up in this first season (yes yes everyone, wait for it) I also never noticed it before but yeah, they never did really resolve the whole thing about the stolen tech did they? Bad writing there. All in all not a terrible episode but with some noticeable flaws

William Terry

Good episode: spoiler alert, it's a remake of TOS "Arena" with improved space battle effects and alien costume and makeup. The guest actors playing the Ferengi are memorable! Lots of time with Captain Picard informs us that he will be far more a diplomacy/consensus kind of guy than Kirk ever was. Stay tuned to see the third form of Shin Bunny!

When I went back to edit I think I noticed there was a quick line about the tech being returned but they really just gloss over it.

Aric Heintzelman

You do a good Ferengi but you might want to check out that dress-code before doing any cos playing.

뱀파이안젤

Early TNG was perhaps "too inspired" by prior TOS episodes ^^...

Desmond

I've never subbed to Paramount, but the ads are getting out of control on all the streaming services it seems.

Desmond

Fairly solid episode by season 1 standards. The Tkon Empire stuff is actually kind of interesting, and it has some good early interaction between the crew. Even if the Ferengi appearance is (mostly) a huge faceplant.

Greg

A lot has been said about this episode which I agree with, so I'll keep my comments brief. I understand your confusion about this episode, Bunny. I'll just say they are setting things up here, and in hindsight (or if you watch this episode again YEARS from now with all of TNG under your belt), it will make a LOT more sense. Since you've seen the Ferengi already, I'll just add that they were added as a 'new race' for Star Trek, as Gene didn't want to feature warfare stories with the Klingons or Romulans for this new show. The reason they looked so massive on the viewscreen was due to THEM doing that -- there's a line about that in the show, easily missed. What I'm NOT sure about is why they move around in such a weird way on the planet! Also, it's not made totally clear, but they reacted strongly to the loud noises like the lightning due to their large ears. I agree their design is very good (and like the Klingons, required HOURS in the makeup chair to them them ready.) The Ferengi captain was played by Armin Shimerman, who is well known for playing a major character for several seasons in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and also voiced Andrew Ryan in the BioShock games. I think this is a fair episode, put up a few points higher by me as I know what comes from stuff shown in this episode, but I also agree it's very similar to some TOS episodes. This is a direct result of Gene being in the Captain's Chair here -- his DNA is ALL over this show, and the results are...well, your seeing them, LOL. After this season he was 'kicked upstairs' and new people took over the show with some major changes and helped to make sure the show was a huge success. (also, Gene's declining health I'm sure was another reason, as the first season of TNG aired 1987-1988 and Gene passed away in 1991). As for the Tkon Empire -- very fascinating race and the Portal is great for a character! It's just a shame we see and learn so little about them here! Without spoiling anything, I CAN say that they do return but won't say anything else about that. (and hopefully your okay with me saying at least THAT much, as I knew how curious you were about them). The Portal knew about Sun Tzu and Riker's name cause of the Enterprise's databanks being scanned. Finally, that Ferengi impression at the end was great! Really LOL moment there. It reminds me of the story of how Michael Dorn got the part for playing Worf. When he went in for the audition, he noticed everyone else was acting, well, normal when they were doing the tryouts, so he decided if he wanted to play a Klingon he should ACT like one. So when it came his turn, he didn't smile, didn't speak, had a serious gruff look on his face, firmly shoot the main interviewer's hand, read his lines for the tryout, and walked out -- exactly as he imagined a Klingon WOULD handle this. And it seemed like it worked, cause he got the role.

David Brown

The Ferengi captain/daimon is played by Mike Gomez. Armin's Letek was leader of the Ferengi away team, not the actual captain/daimon.

Ron

At least the female Ferengi costumes are very inexpensive.

Ron

Believe it or not, I actually like the Ferengi -- just not these Ferengi. But, this is early going and these just an early sketch of the Ferengi species. Think of these Ferengi in the same that you might regard the Vulcans (and Spock) in The Menagerie (or The Cage). These are just early portrayals of species and characters which are not fully evolved on the show. P.S.: I nearly spit my coffee out when I saw your Ferengi audition.

Greg

My bad! Good catch, thanks.

Mark Gosine

At the risk of sounding ostentatiously loquacious… Meh.

Trilogian

I can’t believe you’re on ep 5 and I haven’t finished STC and the movies.🖖

Grey Invader

The Ferengi are definitely an acquired taste. There is one in particular who I'm sure Bunny will like when she is introduced to him further along in her journey...

phillip giroux

If you VPN to a Canadian location you can watch star trek on Netflix

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

“ The Ferengi are definitely an acquired taste.” I hear they’re good with Yamok sauce

Eric Rinehart

Ya I watched a interview with a writer of Star Trek from next generation. anf how bad it was for the writing staff and most scripts weren't or ever done on time and the actors didn't even have some script till hrs before they began shooting the episode. And hired writers from the old Star Trek that returned only for a paycheck and didn't care much about what they wrote

Eric Rinehart

The frengri weren't really give much thought and were in early stages of development the species or new alien race and frengri make up takes many hours to do and set up so the guest star actors dis a great job least the two that did the most talking

Eric Rinehart

Ya writer's probably didn't have enough time to finish the script fully as writing for the show in early years was very much crunch time trying to figure out stories for 20 plus episodes as some or many scripts didn't get into the actors hands until day of or close to day of shooting the episode of the director just decided not to use the full script

Edward M. Crowe

Well great respect for the knowledge of Greg Polander and Matthew Graves above, who know far more about Star Trek than I do, but I just re-watched Episode 6 "Where No One Has Gone Before", and have to give a happy thumbs up sign to Bunny -- #6 is one of their best episodes ever done and I can't wait to see what you think of it. Settle in when you're in the mood for a REALLY good episode, almost just like a movie!

Monte Durbin

I promise the Ferengi do get more refined by the time the series DS8 comes around.. 😅🤣😂

Your Ferengi dance needs to be a youtube short!

timothy w moyer

OMG! LOL . Bunny, you've been in the transporter a mite too long, 😂.

bunnytails

Love the story about Dorn's audition!

bunnytails

I can see the similarities to Arena now that you mention it!

Thegonagle

Your Ferengi audition was hilarious.
