That was from Holmes. Jeremy Brett’s Holmes is the best. A delight to watch these with you

Greg

I don't blame you for being confused, Bunny -- this is yet again another Season One episode that pays homage to TOS with some of the ideas and concepts being used but is a good idea done in a poor way IMHO and with a confusing and abrupt end. For the most part I agree with almost everything you said in your reaction to this. Overall I think this is a average episode, not great but not bad either. We do learn more about the characters here and you can see they are continuing to flesh out and develop the main stars, as well as also figuring out the best ways to USE them in terms of the story. Troi is a great example for that -- the writers didn't really know how to use her powers in Season One and were still figuring things out. If you remember the guy who was in between the two alien delegates on the deck when they were about to fight each other, that's O'Brien. We saw him as a helmsman in the season opener, and he's not named here (at least not directly) but it's the same actor. Sherlock Homes being introduced here for Data here was fun also, as an android IMHO would be the best choice to represent a living Holmes due to how the two of them approached things and handled problems. I've always been a huge Sherlock Holmes fan since I was a kid -- read all the stories, seen most of the movies, enjoy talking about it -- so it was a blast to see it here. My best guess as to what happened with the overall plot -- the cloud is home to a race of living sentient beings, who exist as energy and thus can't escape the cloud (although it seems like they can move the cloud around to a degree). When the Enterprise came into contact with the cloud while passing through doing it's sensor sweep, one of them accidentally ended up trapped in the ship. It gained knowledge as it spread to person to person and then the computer but couldn't figure out how to ask for help. (I'm also not sure I believe it when it says the killing of Singh was an accident, but that's glossed over). Finally with Picard it found a kindred soul, and convinced Picard, at least with his subconscious, that a 'new' way to explore would be to become living energy. Only when he beamed over it didn't work and the fusion was split, and Picard managed to return to the ship when the Enterprise came in contact with it again. Yes, I do think the alien races on board were a red herring, and to help to provide extra drama. It just didn't work well, though. The episode would have been better and tighter had they not been included at all. A lot of fans really hate this episode. I think there's FAR worse episodes, but I can understand their complaints about it. Another rocky episode from a rocky season when TNG was still trying to find it's voice. Hang with it though!

The AC unit was no problem for us

Everyone has the same issues with this episode as you, it could have been great

Hi bunny stay chill love ya love Star Trek

Hi bunny! Great to watch you react to another Star Trek episode! This is one of the early episodes that was all over the map with tone and plot, something people forget happening in TOS season one. One of the recurring stories in TOS was the total takeover of the vital systems of the Enterprise by the alien of the week. I think it started to happen here, with the alien getting into the computer, and then, whether it was the M-5, the guys from the Cheron, or another all-powerful being, that would be it. The difference is the designer of the NCC-1701D has improved the safety features so that the computer needs to know who it's interacting with when executing course changes, energy levels and so forth, requiring action by the officers or crew, for stuff other than self-destruct sequence. Since Picard is the person who does that, they take him over after using the other crew members to tap into their access. Of course they have already encountered the Q and the Tkon Empire so there's still some problems in the system. When Data said he had read every case of Sherlock Holmes, he also must have watched the movies, because Holmes never smoked a meerschaum in the books. I kind of liked the air conditioning set-up from last year, it said USS Yorktown circa 1942. Glad it's fixed; hope it works the way it is supposed to.

Good friend of Gene Roddenberry, William Ware Thiess would win an Emmy Award for his costume designs this first season, the only individual winner of an Emmy in the franchise. Sadly, he became ill and retired after this season.

Desmond

Can I just say, your enthusiasm for this franchise and these characters is infectious. :) You have probably ascertained that this 1st season is not the fans' favorite, but you will absolutely be rewarded for sticking with it.

Ron

Not a great one but not offensively bad either which is par for S1. Don't worry about being unsure if you liked the episode or not. When it's bad, you'll know. Even though this is not a great episode, it still is fundamentally Star Trek and does start the fleshing out where the characters will go. If nothing else, I at least enjoy this aspect of it. * Fun Fact: The alien who was asking for live prey for his meal was played by actor, Marc Alaimo, in an uncredited role. I think this is the first time you've seen his work in Trek, but keep an eye out for him down the road.

Desmond

As for Data, you might be struggling to figure out his character...but don't worry, the writers were too in 1987.

Lucy? Not Shakira cosplay? Cuz dem hips don't lie! 😍

NateWiz

A thing you will quickly see is that TNG alot of times have an A plot and a B plot in one episode.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Yay cosplay! I hope you got it so that outfit fits more comfortably this time. You look great! Don’t feel bad about being ambivalent about this episode Bunny. It’s not terrible, but it does feel like a bunch of disparate random ideas just kinda mashed together. The concepts are good but all feel a bit half baked. Ultimately, a mostly forgettable episode, though there are a few significant character seeds .

Max

Whoa the alien race prosthetics deserve a raise this episode!

George Taylor

At a certain angle, Bunny—the temporary air conditioning unit you are currently using in the background—resembles the freezing device from the Enterprise that the Scalosians intended to use to immobilize the crew in the TOS third season episode Wink of an Eye. Just a little humor I thought you might enjoy.

Edward M. Crowe

The two basic concepts presented in this episode -- an alien being which keeps hopping (sorry!!) from crew member to crew member, and: a crewman who simultaneously has two consciousnesses present in them, has been used in so many episodes, over the entire Star Trek catalog, that (fortunately for spoilerdom) I can't even begin to remember them all! Just that this was one of the worst ones. A mountain made out of a molehill; for 15 or 20 minutes or so, it could have generated some suspense, but over 45 minutes? Uggggh. Also, although I'm no Academy Award judge of performances, I thought there was some over-acting in the episode as well. Finally, what in God's name is Wesley wearing? Is he cold? We don't even wear sweaters that heavy up here in Canada!! Hello! .... Wardrobe?? ... Come in .... ??

Carlos Stevens

Um... Is that the M5 behind you??? Dr. Daystrom would not be pleased.

Stainless Steel Cat

This episode continues the run of only having random engineering staff who never appear again (at least for an understandable reason with Mr Singh). I miss Scotty.

It's a good episode. River gets upset at guests playing "Catch your Dinner" 🍽️. The Lizards were quite interesting. I forgot about this episode. Good story here. Sorry to hear about the A/C yet again. Hope that gets fixed. ....And Lucy is most welcome as a Bunny guest host 😁.

InfinitelyJesting

So fun watching these with someone who hasn't seen them. They say stuff like, "Wow, look at all those cool ship models on the wall" and I'm like, yeah that is cool I forgot about that.

Super Sunny Sunblade

Emperor Picard 'Sith Lightning' Palpatine: "UNLIMITED POWER!!!!" ⚡🙀⚡😹

Eric Rinehart

Aww mr Singh I always wonder if that was a actor first role always see background character that speak very little in shows so when a actor not on a guest star or in a title character list possible being there first time getting there chance to shine in there career as a actor

bunnytails

It did get fixed quickly, and I think you'll see Lucy one more time!

bunnytails

Wesley must have poor circulation :P

bunnytails

Yes, it is fitting very comfortably now!

bunnytails

I will always welcome some good ol' character development!

bunnytails

Kind of sad to hear some people hate this episode. I feel like it had, as you said, some good ideas but poorly executed. I would rewatch it again just to see those two alien species antics again.

Mark Gosine

You've got to say it in the commanding voice of Dr. Daystrom, "EEhmm FIVeh!"

Mark Gosine

I feel a bit like Dr. Evil on your end commentary, "Sssh! I've got a bag full of spoilers for you."
