Star Trek: The Next Generation 1x11 "Haven" - Full Watch-along

Greg

I agree Bunny -- this is a fun episode and one of my favs from Season One. It's always a blast watching these episodes with you as even though I've seen them numerous times your reactions to things, your thoughts on stuff, and your takes on the episode are always very new and refreshing and help me to see them in a new light. You have no idea HOW hard it was for me to not spoil that Majel Barrett was going to return! She was great as Nurse Chapel in TOS and the movies, and you already know that she also voices the computer for most of the Star Trek shows and movies to come. But her role as Lwaxana (Troi's Mother) is her best one, IMHO. Her role here is seen by fans as very divisive -- some people love her role, some hated her, but I thought she was great. But it seems like you had no idea about this, so it was great seeing the surprise on your face. Fan reactions to this episode are mixed also -- seems you either love it or hate it. Yes, the episode has problems. The 'forced wedding' situation has been done to death, the actor playing the part of Wyatt I don't think did a great job, and there's a LOT going on here, perhaps too much, which means it really helps with doing a re-watch. However, I think all of this comes together. You learn more about characters, Troi finally is used to good effect here, there's comedy and sadness and drama and catfighting, and you have both a A and B plot in the same episode which ties together and works, I think, to great effect. Totally agree about the hair and outfits in this episode, and the 'plague ship' was well designed as well. You didn't miss anything -- the episode doesn't really explain why Wyatt and Ariana were tied together the way that they are. Soulmates, I guess? But I admire Wyatt deciding to give everything up, to use his medical knowledge, and to do what he could for these people despite knowing that he was probably going to get infected as well and with only 6 of them they had no chance to re-populate their race. Also the fact they just gave up their request to settle somewhere on Haven is kinda weird, and then they go off to...where, exactly? Sure, they got Wyatt, but they still need somewhere to live! I don't really love how Riker reacted in this episode -- he was jealous, sure, but this all seems way out of character for him. The Riker-Troi relationship is something that is weird -- as it would be in real life, sure, but clearly feelings for each other are still there. Seeing Lwaxana really fluster Picard though and get him out of his comfort zone was great, though. The opening of the episode said that the Enterprise had come to Haven for shore leave -- the wedding and the plague ship matters came up later. I assume the crew was taking turns going down to the planet FOR that shore leave while all this was going on. A shame the senior officers didn't get to experience it. Yet another dig at 'stupid humans' from the late 20th century -- they never get tired of throwing dirt on us, which I guess we deserve. But it's not the last time that your going to hear commentary like that either. TOS did it also, sure, but it happens a lot more often here. Finally, some fun trivia about this episode: The episode was directed by Richard Compton, who had previously appeared as Lieutenant Washburn in The Original Series episode "The Doomsday Machine" "Haven" was the fifth episode to be filmed, but was broadcast as the eleventh episode. Robert Ellenstein appeared as Steven Miller; he had previously appeared as the Federation President in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Armin Shimerman appeared as the face of the Betazoid gift box in this episode. This was his first filmed appearance, but his first broadcast appearance was as the Ferengi Letek in "The Last Outpost"

You have met Lwaxana! If you notice she becomes more obnoxious as she senses Deanna doesn’t want to go through with it. I have nolstagia for this episode though Picard judging the Betazoid method of joining is quite arrogant. It is too bad you saw Majel’s name before seeing her but you were right about who she would play. She is an acquired taste. How Wyatt and Arianna connected is still a mystery.

Summer

MAy-Jel is how to say it

Summer

Deanna said they are completely honest, Riker was jealous but Wyatt was drawn to someone else so hesitated. I wish we had gone to Haven too

Summer

Beware of spoilers, might be good not to surf the net about Haven but watch as much as you want.

I like how Deanna Troi tells Wyatt there's a man I'm in love with but he turned me down, not, 'cuz you and me are one Wyatt (!!). I think it's probably sensible to lead one's fiance into making an admission with a vague, maybe fake, confession. I also like Troi, especially when she spars with Lwaxanna! Here we get to see for the first time Riker off duty, looking as videos of sexy women. Bunny might have noticed the deep kiss between Deanna and Wyatt, a popular meme in the 1980s.

Bret Kay

Lwaxana Troi is awesome! I love her!

NateWiz

Mama Troi is a great character, but your glee for this episode was hilarious :)

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Well, you know I love the book updates, Bunny, but I’ve never read that one, so I can’t really comment. But since you’ll liked it, I think I’ll see if it’s available on Audible. I trust your taste, and I’m always looking for something fun. Lwaxana is a very polaraizing character. Personally I’m not a bigfan. Mr Homm is awesome though. And the episode is well written, with nice character moments for Troi and Riker, and some of the humor hits pretty well. Riker is definitely, shall we say, Kirk-like in some respects. It’s a fun episode. I like it.

Bunny, keep reading actual books. It exercises parts of your brain that watching videos or listening to audio books does not. BTW, there is one thing that all Jeopardy Grand Champions have in common... they are all voracious book readers.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I like this one a lot. Good character drama. I always enjoy it when Star Trek gets a little soap opera-y (ten-SHUN on board the Enterprise!😬😆) and the introduction of one of my favourite side characters #LetLwaxannaCook

Carlos Stevens

For the sake of full disclosure... Arranged marriages were the norm in most of human history.

Carlos Stevens

A whole lot of character development in this episode.

Ha ha, What a great laugh out loud Bunny moment... 😂. Yep, Troi's mom is....interesting. 😆. God help us all if you ever stumble into a Star Trek wardrobe sale. Yes, Haven is a neat episode, glad it's NOW a favorite. That Holodeck scene is Gorgeous and well acted. Did I mention Troi cracked my super-HOT scale here? 😇. Sometimes relationships resemble Intergalactic politics. Good watch along, Bunny. P.S. The book update is really neat, voting yes on continue. I might suggest Pandora's Star By Peter F Hamilton , for you or anybody reading this comment. I haven t read any DC Fontana Trek books, so I will shortly. Thanks for update

Deanna really itadakimasu/gochisosamadeshita-ed her food by Gong *SMASH*ing it into oblivion at the subatomic level: "thanks for the feast, I'm DONE mom!" LOL

Desmond

Majel Barrett was also Number One on "The Cage". She has roots on Trek going back to the very beginning.

Desmond

Not my favorite episode, but I have to admit there are moments that bring a smile to my face.

reply

hair and makeup dept, can you do the enterprise crew for a wedding party? dept: of course! After all the wild alien prosthetics, Hollywood wedding glowups is child's play ohoho!

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

“ God help us all if you ever stumble into a Star Trek wardrobe sale.” I submit that that would be the best of all possible timelines

InfinitelyJesting

Another decent episode made 50% better with the Bunnytails amplifier.

Riker wants his cake and eat it too ;)

I'm a big fan of Lwaxana and of Majel (pronounced May-jul) in general. This is a great episode. Rewatching this, I've just realised that a minor character in the show Futurama seems to be directly based on Wyatt's dad - the look and personality are very close! A lot of the Star Trek novels are very good (though there's a few stinkers). Some of my favourite TOS novels were by Diane Duane - she was particularly good with the TOS-era Romulans.

Greg

Stronger in some cultures then others -- but for the most part, yes, a true statement. Marriage just for love wasn't really a thing in western cultures until the Victorian era. Some asian families still practice arranged marriages, where new born kids are 'contracted' for each other, although such things are impossible to enforce legally now, there's still a lot of family pressure in these cases. (This happens with some African tribes also).

bunnytails

I can see mama Troi's character being divisive among fans. I think I tend to have a fairly high tolerance toward the more "eccentric" characters.

bunnytails

True, I'm interested to see where things will go!

bunnytails

Yeah, I can't wait to get to some more Star Trek novels! The possibilities seem endless!

Mark Gosine

Oh, I always knew that the Terrellians used soap bubble drive. %). Bunny, you need to, maybe just once, say, "I love that dress!" Just like Spock when he said, "The Women!" Oh, and I love the later Wyatt outfit. The one that Mork from Ork always wore. I also cannot, get past the actor who plays Wyatt. I've seen him play too many bad-guy roles, that I cannot see him as a romantic interest. Ok episode.

bunnytails

Ohh. Now that you say it, I guess he does look like he could play a villain pretty well!
