Star Trek: The Next Generation 1x21 "The Arsenal of Freedom" - Full Watch-along

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

One of those top 3 S1 episodes (for me personally) that I mentioned in another comment. Can't watch yet (stuck at work, boo👎) but very excited to watch this reaction as soon as I'm able.

Jim Jones

No spoilers. Riker does want to be a captain but he's practical. He knew being first officer on the flagship would give him great experience. Geordi was great in this episode! One of the funny things is the "papa" units were terrible shots for being so advanced. They only hit trees. 🤣

I'm glad Bunny really enjoyed this episode, cause I did also. It's one of my favs from Season one, and again like so many episodes, helps to lay down the foundation for what is to come. It was fun to see Gordi finally get more of an episode directed at him. He admitted to Troi he was terrified inside but he was holding it well, thanks to his training and experience, and while he WAS already offering encouragement to the others, Troi's message was a gentle reminder to keep it up and apply more of it. Worf was fun here also -- he really let his Klingon side show sometimes, LOL Saucer separation was expensive to do when making the show, so whenever it happens you knew you were in for a treat, and this episode didn't disappoint! I agree with you about the plots -- I'd say the 'A' plot was the away team and the 'B' plot the ship, but they were so mixed together it was hard to separate them, and you also had sub plots going on in the plots (Crusher's injury and Picard both trying to keep her awake and find a way out, and Lt. Logan pushing to be given command). There was a lot going on here, but it was fast paced and worked well, outside of the typical plot holes each episode seems to have. (For example, if you lower your shields when your that deep in a planet's atmosphere you'd burn up right away.) Logan DID outrank Jordi, and normally he'd be able to take command due to that. However, since LaForge had been directly placed in command of the ship by the Captain, barring anything major like being knocked out, he could stay. That's a rare case where pulling rank doesn't work. (there's another factor involved also, but spoilers). Also interesting to learn more about the backstory of Crusher. I noticed also she said the name 'Matthew' who I believe is her deceased husband. Was he also on the planet with her and her grandmother and was killed during whatever event happened? I'm unsure. The usual group of good guest actors in this one, with the highlights being Vincent Schiavelli as the Merchant and Vyto Ruginis as Logan, both of them experienced actors with a lot of history. And yes, I agree that along with basic security and self defense training all Starfleet officers do get some first aid treatment as well. The premise of this episode as a final point always struck me as a bit of irony. The title 'Arsenal of Freedom' reminds me of the old Roman saying "Si vis pacem, para bellum", which means "If you want peace, prepare for war." It's a doctrine that many nations including the US have followed over the years, and is debatable as to how effective it actually is.

Cosplay yay??? Do PJs count? Regardless, watching you bop along to the theme song in your fuzzy wuzzies was adorable, so that’s fun. Excellent episode. You mentioned that there didn’t seem to be an “A and B” plot. You are right, largely because from a technique perspective the writing on this is near perfect. Just really well structured. Plus a great balance of character (Bev and especially Geordi) and fun, gripping action. This episode is also the first episode of what my group of friends called “competency porn” at the time. Watching this group of characters rise to challenges is always fun and both Tasha and Geordi come off extremely well here. The only one who comes across badly is our (by my count) 3rd Chief Engineer now. And boy is he a schmuck. I remember thinking that it was quite annoying at the time. The Crusher/Picard quip 😁. You said it this time not me.

This is my fav of season 1. I read somewhere that the writers originally wanted Crusher to reveal her feelings to Picard, but Roddenburry said no.

Desmond

Yeah. this was a good one. Good action, and nice to see Geordi shine in command of the Enterprise. We also got to see Picard in a serious life-or-death situation while off the bridge.

Desmond

I think Geordi being a bridge officer, despite "only" being a Lieutenant, is also significant. He's not just any Lieutenant, he drives the damn ship.

Super Sunny Sunblade

Why are all the guest actresses always look like supermodels 😻

You reasoned immediately what happened to the people and how to solve it, usually for me that would reduce the episode for me to realize so fast, but this was part of my rediscovery of Trek twenty years ago so it wins points, Riker talks a computer into trapping him, and it is well told. Then there is the Geordi side of things which is awesome on many levels. Ah the next episode will be interesting to see your thoughts. If I didn’t know you are further ahead in your watching I would tease you about Bev maybe not making it to sick bay, but you are at least to episode 24

You said they're "engaged" during Data x Tasha teamup aww

Stainless Steel Cat

An automated sales message from a dead world followed by an attack. Luckily in this case it didn’t lead to the spontaneous creation of a whale and a bowl of petunias. “Oh no, not again.”

bunnytails

Oooh dang! That woulda been interesting! But there was already a lot going on in this episode.

bunnytails

I won't be afraid to say the things that SOME of us are thinking! ;D

bunnytails

Hope you got a chance and enjoyed it! Fantastic episode!

Solid S1 entry. Good, but what makes it good also is what makes it not a good episode that has the re-watchability factor. Simply knowing the outcome. For me anyway. I see no one has yet explained Riker's ship name. There's an old Shirley Temple movie where she sings this song. "On the good ship Lollipop It's a sweet trip to a candy shop Where bon-bons play On the sunny beach of peppermint bay" "Yes, the Lollipop", said Riker, "She's a good ship." Even when this premiered, I thought, "How in the world would Riker know that old song?" Mayhap the writers were on a roll.

Greg

It's established during the show (in fact we already saw at least one reference to this that I can recall in Season one) that Riker actually is a bit of a old history and culture guy, reading about past stuff and learning about things. I always just assumed that he knew the song due to that.

Carlos Stevens

heh... I'm Team Bunny... Because, I don't want to give out spoilers about how I'd ether be on Team Picard or Team Crusher. But I think I can say without spoiling anything... The Adventure Is Just Beginning.

I have always enjoyed this episode. Love seeing the saucer separation again. A great musical score. Good action in both plots. Geordi in command is great. And, as always, Bunny, a very entertaining reaction!
