Beneath the Planet of the Apes - Full watch-along

Emma

I love the ending.

Emma

Ape society has a three-caste system: Chimpanzee (Intellectuals), Gorilla (Warriors and Labourers) and Orangutan (Religious and Administrative). It differs from other separations, such as the Three Estates (Clergy, Nobility, Commoners).

Emma

I enjoyed your reaction. The sequel was problematic because Charlton Heston didn't want to do it, hence James Franciscus was brought in to retread what we learnt in the first movie. So the first half has some nostalgic elements, but does not seem to propel the story further. Then the movie finally goes 'Beneath' and gets weird. We get Taylor back only to have Taylor, Brent and Nova all killed and the world destroyed. I think the movie speaks to the era in which it was made (MAD, peace protests), but you can certainly appreciate that we have not learnt the lessons of the past. How to follow that movie?

Emma

I don't understand how Ursus and the army head off into the Forbidden Zone and end back in the semi-lush environment where there was the entrance to the subway that Brent and Nova used when being pursued by the smaller Gorilla party. I appreciate that to cut costs, it makes sense to reuse the sets built for the scenes with Brent and Nova, but in-universe, I struggle with it. After the nuclear devastation, we have the mute, pastoral humans above ground and the mutated humans below ground. Echoes of The Time Machine.

...and the fourth estate (the free press sometimes; the military at other times)

Disturbing ending. Powerful.

Oh wonderful Bomb, oh glorious Bomb, oh wonderful, glorious Bomb..... I had forgotten how dark the ending was. Bunny, you where on the right track on how the series continues,

Muggy

Let's face it, it's all built around the ending, the total destruction of earth. Why? Wasn't the future bad enough in the first movie? Frankly, no. Many people didn't have quite the anti nuke reaction that they expected. "Maybe Armageddon wouldn't be so bad, the earth survives and man is moved down a peg. Not so terrible a future for earth, just man" That's why they decided to really create a different anti nuke narrative, total destruction of the planet. The question is, how can you make another sequel if the planet blows up?

Stainless Steel Cat

Not my favourite Apes film but given the drama going on in the background - Heston not wanting to do it etc - probably as good as it could be. I do like the next one. Incidentally, James Gregory, who played General Ursus, was in the Star Trek episode Dagger of the Mind as Dr. Adams.

William Terry

Your hair looks great 😃 Thank you bunny! The substitute Taylor and Cornelius are very well done, and are supported by actors such as Victor Buono, James Gregory, as the gorilla general, Natalie Trundy and Don Pedro Colley, who played the Mutants. Gregory Sierra has a good scene as well, sort of intro to the Mutants. Linda Harrison is stunningly beautiful. Love the Beneath the PotA Mass of the holy bomb!

While I hadn't seen any of last century's PotA sequels when originally voting for a Planet of the Apes 1968 movie night before trying the wildly successful Rise of the PotA modern storyline to not get 1968's iconic Statue of L scene spoiled if not watching the original first, I must say after a nothingburgerish initial half of Beneath the PotA the ending half really went off into a completely unexpected direction I never once imagined the series going into 🙀...So thanks for another watchalong to experience new og lore & worldbuilding at least hehehe 😹

Emma

While Mark Lenard played the Gorilla Security Chief Urko in the TV series.

bunnytails

Ah right. I forgot about the religion aspect.

bunnytails

I guess we'll just have to find out!

Carlos Stevens

You know, I lost track, was this the 5th or the 3rd in the series?

William Terry

It wraps up the series so I guess it's 5th.

Scott Phx

Good watch, Bunny. Rough ending, I know. As always, your empathy and humanity is much appreciated.

Mark Gosine

Catching up. I never was a big fan of this installment. I was a huge plan of the apes fan back in the day. This one was just too dark for my liking, and not much Taylor.
