Babylon 5 - The Gathering - Full watch-along

Justinus

Excited for you to start this series!

Greg

Decided to buy the Complete Collection on DVD and just waiting for that to come and then I'll watch this. Never seen Babylon 5, so this will be a first time reaction for me as well with Bunny.

Emma

And so it begins

As you probably surmise, spoilers for this show abound. You need good mods who are going to remove stuff that hints heavily at material you haven't seen yet. Obviously, the focus should simply be on the episode at hand, but episodes also connect or pick up from what a prior episode has established. There is a lot of continuity. Just go with the flow and don't worry too much for now.

This is simultaneously one of my favorite Sci-fi shows of all time and the show I've never been able to get my fellow sci-fi nerd friends to watch because the CGI they used was very new. Have never been successful in convincing them that the story and the performances are worth it Extremely happy that you are watching it. Can't wait to see you experience it for the first time.

I’ve always enjoyed you telling us about your reading journey along with your science fiction watching journey and because of that I always felt you would appreciate the powerful writing and the overarching structure of the show. It’s analogous to a five novel grand saga, with an overarching story structure of tempo and plots patiently playing out over the course of the entire, preplanned series. JMS is part and parcel of the best traditions of creating science fiction as innovative literary work, as serious literature/drama in addition to entertainment. His mentorships, connections and friendships among the giants like Rod Serling and Harlan Ellison are a sign of it, and someday (after babylon 5) you should read his autobiography “becoming superman” for some shocking and powerful background on his life and on babylon 5.

The same as Greg said, Bought the series on iTunes. I have never seen B5 as well, it'll be a fun ride. This first was good. Watched it on YouTube this episode. iTunes not included this episode.

Trish

The next 4 years will be fun .I watched it back in 94 on broadcast TV

Emma

This was the remastered Pilot with music by Christopher Franke, who handles the series music. The original pilot was longer and had music by Stewart Copeland. As you might expect, there is a lot of info dumping, one way or another. Enjoy feeling a bit lost for now; most of the pieces will fall into place. Watching again, there is a weird bit where Sinclair takes Lyta through the alien sector, so that he can dump some more lore. They put on the masks and head in, and then the next thing you know, they have come out again. In the original pilot, we see a lot of weird and wonderful aliens in their cubicles, but it felt a little wrong and a bit silly, so the intervening scenes were cut. Don't worry, there is more to explore as the show progresses.

Frictionless sheets? Imagine the thread count 😺

Lost Monk

This movie ain’t the best… but the series is amazing.

Christian Rennie

Hooray, our B5 journey begins! Thanks for this and, I hope, welcome to the B5 Fandom!

Mark Gosine

And the journey begins. Narn is like yarn. 😀 Yes, it's quite a lot of info dump. I first watched in 94. I was really interested in watching because I like science fiction. And, secondly, JMS used the software Lightwave for the 3D effects. I used the software back then. And back when the boards on the internet we're subject oriented, and remained that way for a time., i had dialogue frequently with the Star Trek Voyager CGI guys who also used Lightwave.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Well, I'm on board. I used the link you provided to buy the series from AppleTV on sale, so thanks for that Bunny! :) When B5 initially aired I watched it on and off, but I wasn't as into it as some people were. I have some vauge recollections of major plot points and specific episodes, but it's been, what, 30 years or so? So it's all pretty fuzzy. There’s some things about the cast that seem a bit off to me but I'm sure it will all work itself out over the course of the series. The writing here is a little slow and exposition heavy. On the other hand, there are many fascinating characters that I'm excited to get reacquainted with. The CGI on the external shots looks somewhat dated, but that’s to be expected and was probably top notch at the time. The practical interior sets and alien makeup are very good. This should be fun!

The Babylon 5 Security Council consists of the following five members: The Earth Alliance, represented by Commander Jeffrey Sinclair. The Minbari Federation, represented by Ambassador Delenn. The Centauri Republic, represented by Ambassador Londo Mollari. The Narn Regime, represented by Ambassador G'Kar. The Vorlon Empire, represented by Ambassador Kosh Naranek.

fargoboyle .

I wasn't bothered too much by the CGI, it looked good in 93/4 and rewatching over the years hasn't affected me enjoying it. Once you realise it's about the story and the journey each character takes the CGI becomes irrelevant. There's so much to unfold here, it'll be interesting to see if newcomers start to piece things together, very early days of course.

Harry S

I bought the series and all the movies years ago. It was in season 1 as an extra.

Harry S

I watched the show when it came out. TNT kept pre emptying it for basketball so I never knew if it would be on or not. Then they canceled it for poor ratings. Paramount stole the idea for star trek and made deep space 9. That's why there were 2 sci fi shows about a space station that came out in the same year.

Trish

I watched on upn which was on broadcast TV Sunday nights 10 or 11pm

Trish

4 season 100 episode and 3 TV movies also a spinoff show crusade for 12 episodes

bunnytails

As with Star Trek, I think it will be hard to avoid spoilers :(

bunnytails

It saddens me when people don't give something worthwhile a chance due to outdated or subpar graphics. :(

bunnytails

I'm looking forward to it! Hopefully we both enjoy it :D

bunnytails

It took me a few episodes to get the pronunciations down so just bear with it for a bit lol

bunnytails

I'm glad some people were able to grab the series on sale! It will be a first time for some of us (or kind of first time for you) and that's exciting!

Alexandre Santos

This narrative that Paramount stole the idea is just JMS BS, he was butthurt because they didnt pick up his show, but DS9 was in early develop for a while, it even came before B5.

Harry S

Of course it came out before B5. JMS pitched B5 to Paramount, they stole his idea and started ds9. Meanwhile JMS was still looking for someone to pickup B5. Two shows about spacestation come out in the same year and it's just a big coincidence, cause it happens so often. I don't think so.

George N

Hi Bunny. I have so much to say about this reaction. if you remember I basically joined your Patreon from Youtube for the B5 reactions (TheDolfanar on YT). This was my first full watchalong. Love it. Will have a follow up post to write up the race names. This movie played a full year before the series debuted (there is a time jump before the next episode... not a spoiler in any way) so they had to do a LOT of exposition in the first act. The first 25minutes was basically all exposition. the middle act was all about introducing a LOT of characters. the third act I think best represents what a typical episode is like. I can't wait for the next episode!

George N

Londo Molari (dude with the peacock hair) is a CENTAURI. Delenn is a MINBARI (and was in s1 of Arcane btw... Mira Furlan). Kosh is a VORLON. G'Kar is a NARN (not Norn ;)

George N

I was 16 when this first aired in syndication in Montreal. It played at midnight on Wednesday nights... mostly. it got movd around alot. Following this show, and the creator online nearly led me into a career as writer. I love it so much. It's a gift being able to experience this through someone elses eyes. I did this with an ex once... she was super hesitant at first but by the middle of the first season she was so addicted we rocketed through all 5 seasons in a couple weeks LOL

George N

The first three seasons are SUPER easy from a watch order POV. Just watch the episodes in order. Season 4 is where things get wonky., but we have a while before we need to worry about that. I hope you enjoy!

George N

It was pretty much the first show to exclusively use CGI so was pretty groundbreaking. The effects got measurably better every season.

bunnytails

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the watchalong! Sorry about my pronunciations! It did take me a couple episodes to get them right, but I did get there! I have watched maybe 6 or 7 episodes now. I won't say too much but I am really enjoying it! There was only one episode that kind of fell flat for me so far.

Paul Hess

George it's amazing to hear how this show and then JMS as a role model nearly inspired you into a career in writing. After the full show I hope Bunny decides to read his autobiography Becoming Superman to learn more about his incredible journey. I used to watch Babylon 5 with my precocious grade schooler with a deliberate focus on using the show to teach writing. We would pause or rewatch and talk about creative sentence structure, character speeches, rhythms used in the dialogue, and story structure category. It inspired him into a multi year obsession with writing (including selling a story) and a skillset/mindset that has bolstered him through high school and now college.

Anthony O;Grady

Welcome to Babylon 5, hope you enjoy it.

George N

Love it Paul. JMS was so accessible and open on the old Lurker message boards. Especially about the changes he had to make to his plan over the years. Alot of that info is still out there. It not only informed how I thought about writing, but even shaped my early mind about how to plan things ahead, but be willing to change the plan. I manage big projects today and I still use some of the approaches I inferred from his insights.

George N

Bunny! Don't apologize for the Norn thing. It made me laugh every time! Sincere laughter is always a good thing. Without giving too much away... how put off were you by the make-up change to Delenn? IMO it's the most jarring change from Pilot to Series. Even more than the re-castings...

George N

BTW I just learned that the full 5 seasons is available free on Amazon Prime in Canada. Not the pilot or any of the movies though sadly. I have multiple copies of DVDs and Blu Ray of the whole series but if any of my Canadian homies want to ride along with Bunny, it's very low investment.

Mark Sulkowski

Babylon 5 is an excellent show. Stick with it and you will be rewarded!

bakamitai

I just joined your Patreon for the show. It's one of my all-time favorites, for reasons I'm sure you'll discover soon. I'm so happy that both you and FunnyLilGal (Angela) both started at about the same time, it's twice the fun for me. Looking forward to getting caught up with your reactions!

bunnytails

Welcome, thanks for being here! I hope you enjoy!
