Babylon 5 - 1x2 "Soul Hunter" - Full watch-along

Mark Gosine

I'm dying to watch later.

I'm having a really bad day during travel with plans that got cancelled for no good reason. So guess what I'm going to do right now to feel better? Watch this! From memory, I'm really looking forward to our introduction of Richard Biggs as Doctor Franklin, a particularly intense young actor who does a wonderful job, and then the amazingly well written ranting droning dialog from the Soul Hunter, listen to every word sometimes one sentence fragment Yo-Yos through multiple emotions and drops multiple lines or lore.

Bunny: "Interesting, I don't know what to believe" Welcome to Babylon 5!

Compelling content! Nifty Special effects!

Trish

It is the same actress mira furlan

So far my favorite character is the second-in-command Ivanova. The scene where she's talking to Sinclair about the souls is a nod to Nikolai Gogol, who wrote "The Nose" and relevant in the episode, "Dead Souls". The plot kind of reminds me of the movie "Soultaker", written by and starring Vivian Schilling along with Joe Estevez.

Originally, the script for Soul Hunter was quite different, but JMS felt that it was too Trek-like. So he got all copies returned and destroyed them, bar one. He then rewrote it, and that is what we got. What we have got is as close to a Space 1999 episode as I think B5 ever got, where an alien/Monster of the Week comes to Moonbase Alpha. It does seem more self-contained than the previous episode, but JMS and the production crew are still trying to convince the network that this is an episodic show where viewers can dip in and out. It is still early days, and the threat of cancellation looms, so the show has to be familiar and palatable enough to find an audience. I believe this is the first episode of the show I saw back in 1994.

The Stealer of Souls is a series of stories concerning Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock, published in 1963. I'm glad you liked N'Grath, the mantis-like alien underworld boss. W Morgan Sheppard played the rogue Soul Hunter - his voice is quite distinctive. John Sydner played the second Soul Hunter. If you have seen Crocodile Dundee, you might remember him as the pimp whom Mick floors.

Andrew Mortimer

old fashioned tv, you cant afford to pay every member of the cast to appear in every episode. first season is a bit hit and miss, but theres usually a b or c plot to vibe with if the A plot falls flat. they cut back on Delenn's prosthetics from the pilot, probably to make it easier on the actor, still played by Mira Furlan (r.i.p)

Episodes contain the actors needed; this is a Delenn-centric episode. We get to see more about the Minbari, even if it is bits and pieces. As you surmised, some lines and threads tease about what might come. What is and isn't important is hard to see.

Emma

Interestingly, JMS chose the man to die as a confidence trickster who uses the shell game. The object is to find the ball under one of the three cups, but it is never there. Three cups and an elusive ball that is not contained in any.

StuArtist Studio

He took the security guard's PPG after he knocked him out.

The "Mantis Guy" is N'Grath. He's the local underworld "fixer". Is there any kind of shady deed you need done? Are you looking for a black market deal? Are you looking for a place to hide from the law? Do you need weapons? Do you want a "message" sent to your enemy? See N'Grath. He'll fix it for you, for a price, of course.

Hang in there buddy!

I forgot how early in the series this episode is. It is low-key a pretty important episode. Not all of the souls rebel if you pay attention. Only about a dozen, which happens to be the number the second Soul Hunter says has been murdered by the first. Are you tired yet of us pointing out that this is the same Delenn, same actress, just different makeup? LOL

Emma

I love peanuts

Emma

Expensive.....

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

I didn't care much for this one. Most sci-fi does eventually wander over into fantasy territory eventually when dealing with concepts of consciousness and life after death, etc. So I cabn cope with that. But this just didn't capture my imagination or do anything particularly interesting with it. The whole thing was a bit boring and slow to me. Great alien designs and makeup though! The setup that Delenn has a secret and has some agenda related to the past war and Sinclair in particular seem interesting though.

George N

I just realized this myself... the actor who plays The Soul Hunter... same dude who played Doctor Ira Graves in The Schizoid Man from TNG!

fargoboyle .

Delenn needed her own episode to introduce her character, if you're missing Londo and G'Kar then your in for a treat with this series.

Squeesher

Yup! Also the Klingon Governor of the prison on Rura Penthe in Star Trek 6

What a delight! A first for me. Watching the first time along , having never seen the series. Yeah , I got the same kind od impressions also. I'll return for more. Thanks for the time and effort, Bunny LOL, Mantis guy. 😂

bunnytails

I hope your days have been better, Paul!

bunnytails

Yeah, Ivanova is growing on me as well!

bunnytails

Ohhh I didn't catch that at all! Neat!

bunnytails

Hmm I didn't really catch that, thanks!

bunnytails

Glad you're enjoying it enough to keep watching with me!

bunnytails

Yeah, they at least give us a lot of things to wonder about!

Greg

I liked this one, although it was very confusing to me. This feels like one of those foundation episodes where they are laying down the groundwork for a LOT of stuff that will be referenced or happening in later episodes. I think I'll enjoy this more in hindsight. The Soul Hunter concept and someone going rogue in their order was very interesting.

bunnytails

A fixer, gotcha! I learned a bit about what they are from playing Cyberpunk 2077

StuArtist Studio

N'Grath is one of my favorite minor characters. I've always liked his bodyguards.

Emma

If I had a nickel for every time a Star Trek VI actor appeared on Babylon 5, I would have a few nickels.

Emma

Good to have someone else along and see the episodes fresh. Feel free to give your emotional response and what you do and don't like. Questions may be asked, but possibly not answered unless it is stuff such as "what is that text below the newspaper headline"? People have free-framed episodes, so no need for you to waste time deciphering stuff that it would not be expected a viewer in the 90s with a CRT could decipher.

Texas Anla'Shok

B5 came out after the Hubble Space Telescope was launched so JMS used images it took as inspiration if not used actual shots.

Texas Anla'Shok

Just hit me, almost half the names in the opening credits are no longer with us. Michael, Jerry, Mira, Stephen, Richard, Andreas, time has not been kind to the B5 cast.

MertzRocks

N'Grath is 'mantis guy', the insectoid criminal 'kingpin' of B5.

MertzRocks

Yes, W. Morgan Shepherd also played Icheb's father in an ep of ST:VOY, also Canton Everett Delaware III (older) in an ep of Doctor Who (and his son Mark played the younger version of CED3).

MertzRocks

Delenn and all Minbari were originally supposed to be androgynous, which is why Delenn looks rather un-feminine in the pilot movie. They scaled back her prosthetics and gave her a more feminine look, and it worked. And then... Spoilers... DON'T watch the INTRO for the first two episodes of season 2 or you'll spoil that spoiler! I know you're not even close yet, just remember. REMEMBERING is actually a key to this show. So much is set up in S1 and S2 that get paid off later in the show - sometimes a LOT later! Recalling stuff that happened long ago in the show could be vital to understanding what goes on in that present...

Philip

Great reaction! As you're probably realizing, J. Michael Straczynski is doing a great job not only introducing all the characters but providing backgrounds for them all right away. Something not really done in ST TOS & TNG; we only learned more about the characters over time. Of course B5 and ST DSN needed to do this since the shows have an arc (i.e. they are not stand-alone episodes that you can watch in any old order). Also, you may have noticed that the intro-credits used several shots from this episode: the second Soul Hunter, Sinclair walking with Delenn, N'Grath, and Sinclair searching for Delenn while holding his PPG (Phased Plasma Gun).

Philip

Bunny, before you're done with B5, I predict we're going to see you in an Earthforce uniform. :-)

bakamitai

Everybody loves N'Grath (the mantis) 🤣
