"There is a great disturbance in the force"

StuArtist Studio

Centauri males wear their hair up in a crest to show off their status. The bigger the crest, the more important the Centauri male. Centauri females shave their heads, except for just enough to form a sort of ponytail, especially young unmarried females. Often older Centauri matrons are shaved totally bald.

I think this is a touching Season 1 episode. Christopher Franke does great with the music.

William Terry

"Entrance" means in context to put into a trance. It's spelled the same as the noun form of enter, like entering a room via the door-entrance, or the style of entering.

Emma

I cannot remember when I first watched, which characters I was attracted to, but so far, Garibaldi and Londo would be my bet. As you stated, characters are included if needed; they don't need to be omitted. Talia proves important to moving the plot forward, but it does seem like she is used as a narrative shortcut, just like in Episode 1 where she accidentally scanned Londo on his way to kill G'Kar.

The first two episodes were written by JMS, getting the show running and setting the tone. This episode was written by Larry DiTillio, the story editor for Season 1. Joe and Larry were something of a partnership, having worked together on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and continued through on She-Ra: Princess of Power. Larry's brother Robert is an actor who also appears in this episode, heavily disguised as the alien Norg who handles Sinclair and Londo in the Dark Star.

This is actually the first episode of B5 I ever watched.

Purple means royalty. The most expensive dye. It was often restricted to royalty. It mixes red and blue without any green, but green is between red and blue. Tricky to make.

I originally saw this episode as a teenager. As a divorced man approaching 50 this episode... hits different. 'nuff said.

Oh and Bunny... try to not give away the homeworld, ok?

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

I liked this one. Not an action heavy episode but tightly plotted and excellent character work. The only thing I'd criticize is that the way the writers shipped Adira off at the end was a bit perfunctory but the actors did a good job of selling it, nonetheless. Bunny, I think what you were referring to in your closing statement was what they refer to as "set design". I thoroughly agree. I mentioned it in my comments on the pilot, and they clearly put some great effort into it. I think they should have a Trek/B5 crossover where the Vulcans and Centaurians get together to jointly estabish the galaxy's first Institute for Advanced Eyebrow Grooming Studies.

I always get a kick out of G'Kar sneaking looks at the dancer.

fargoboyle .

You should make notes on where you stand with the characters after say 6/8 episodes (early impressions) then further down the line revisit to see if you still feel the same.

Mark Gosine

G'Kar and Londo. What a team.

Emma

That is a common problem with the show. Introduce a character who is shown to be living on B5 for some time, do a little dance with them and the plot for one episode, then construct a rationale for them to leave the station at the end of the episode, so you don't need to deal with the character again. It is a tricky one to pull off.

LOL. This was a fun one also. She was GORGEOUS ! LOL. The Bug Guy is back. LOL. 😂

Im so happy your watching B5. I am sure people have already said this but the first season is the set up for the larger series and you really havn't seen anything yet.

MertzRocks

On the color wheel? Green is between Blue and Yellow. Green is the opposite of Red.

MertzRocks

That's just Garibaldi's gas... It'll pass...

Centauri have... SIX

I really like those two shows also, knowing the same folks worked together here really puts things into context.

Since this is a first time watch of B5 along with Bunny, I don't have as much to say, compared to her Star Trek reactions, as I don't have the full context and history to draw upon. I'm sure this will make some of you happy, LOL Pretty good episode over all. Slow paced, but there was a lot going on here, and it flowed together well. More setting the scene for what's to come, I feel like. Yes, characters coming in and out of episodes does feel a bit jarring. It's not like Star Trek where sometimes a major character is missing in a episode but they are in 90 percent of that season's shows. I'm guessing this is just due to budget constraints. The grungy and 'lived in' feel of B5 is also due to the limited budget, I'm sure, but it works really well here as Bunny pointed out. There's nothing worse then an older man, lonely and unhappy with live, seeking love and a reason to get up in the morning, falling hard for a sexy and caring younger woman, only to find it was all a ruse. At the end though I thought he handed it really well. He allowed her to go and didn't force the issue, but left the door open for them to enter each others lives again if she wishes.

Another great reaction, Bunny. FYI, the actress who played Adira, Fabiana Udenio, was in the World War II true story drama, "The Scarlet and the Black" (as Guila Lombardo), that also starred Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer (Klingon General Chang in ST VI). As for my favorite character at this point, I mentioned on your YouTube reaction to "The Gathering" that I only started watching B5 after a friend lent me videotapes of "TKO" and "By Any Means Necessary." I was hooked, especially by the latter of those two, and taped the rest of S1 until I caught up with the re-runs then watched them all in order before S2 aired. So, given I had seen "By Any Means Necessary" and now these early episodes, the answer would be Cmdr. Sinclair. I also liked Lt. Cmdr. Ivanova. It was becoming evident in just a few episodes that JMS was giving us some strong female leads: Claudia Christian and Mira Furlan (Delenn). Something which seemed to take forever with TNG writers.

What did you think of it at that time?

Texas Anla'Shok

It was enough to get my attention. I was one of those who came in after the switch to TNT. While season 5 was airing, the older episodes were showing every weekday right after I got home from school, so I was able to rapidly catch up.

Sorry, they never taught us the color wheel. Only kids with artistic skills. "Yes, green is positioned exactly between red and blue in terms of light wavelength, color wheel sequences, and digital display mixing systems. Here is how green fits between the two: In Visible Light: The visible light spectrum runs in order of wavelength. Red has the longest wavelength, green sits in the middle, and blue has shorter wavelengths. On the Color Wheel: Whether dealing with art and paints (RYB) or light (RGB), the spectrum connects in a wheel. Green serves as the bridge, falling halfway between red and blue. In Color Models (RGB): When working with digital displays, mixing additive colors, green acts as the middle primary color bridging Red and Blue. In contrast, mixing red and blue light (or pigment) results in purples or magentas. Unlike mixing light on a screen, making physical purple dye requires combining pigments that absorb green light rather than emitting red and blue. Historically and chemically, creating this color involves specific biological sources or precise mineral mixing. Purple was historically the most difficult, labor-intensive, and expensive dye in the ancient world. The extreme complexity of the process is precisely why purple became universally associated with royalty and extreme wealth.

I love every time Londo and G'Kar share screen time. Their chemistry is perfect! Also, N'Grath makes another appearance, huzzah. Your comment about Adira's dress reminded me that this show has some amazing ideas for cosplays. It has a strong following even today and there are plenty of designers and suppliers out there. 😉

bunnytails

I didn't even think about doing a cosplay for this show. I should look into it!
