Another banger ... they're coming more and more frequently now!

Squeesher

He tapped the deck because you can choose whether or not to cut. Geordi chose not to, likely trusting that Data's ethical subroutines wouldn't allow him to stack the deck in his own favour or do any other card shuffling tricks in an honest game.

Fun facts! * the Klingon ship footage was reused from The Motion Picture. * The tactical room Worf and K’Ehleyr worked in was partially recycled from a TOS movie bridge set. * K’Ehleyr played another character in the Schizoid Man episode. And THAT character was originally going to be a love interest for Worf!

Almost done with season 2 this was a good one

Greg

I really enjoy this episode, just like Bunny does. I'm a big fan of the Klingons so any episode with them is a positive. Great character development with Worf and also the Emissary. I think the crew of the Enterprise is correct that the Klingon's ship mission was for military reasons. But WHY they went into cryo in the first place is curious, and the weakest part of the episode (but every episode has a plot hole). I just don't see the reason for this Klingon ship to be asleep for 75 years. The Romulans did indeed invent the cloaking device, and during the short lived alliance with the Klingons they traded the device to the Klingons in return for a number of Klingon ships, fitted out for Romulan needs. Hence Bunny's favorite meme 'Klingons! Or Romulans in Klingon ships!' (the real reason for this alliance was that the TOS folks lost the original Romulan ship model and had to improvise during the next Romulan episode). There's a reason that the Federation doesn't use cloaking devices of their own, but I was reminded that will be explained later on. I also really like the solution that Worf came up with to get the Klingon ship to stand down. Very cool.

Poor Worf, friendzoned

Andrew Westcott

Bunny, the reason that the Federation hasn't developed cloaking technology was due to the Treaty of Algeron, which defined the Romulan Neutral Zone and established the Cloaking Ban on the Federation.

William Terry

Worf has the best "Oh my God" expression.

Try not to spoil everyone

Really good Worf episode. Does a lot to develop his character. And Suzie Plakson is great as K'Ehleyr. She makes a very strong impression, and the chemistry she had with Michael Dorn was obvious. You might not have recognized her but she previously appeared on TNG as the Vulcan doctor Selar (previously seen in the episode "The Schizoid Man". On cloaking devices, there is a reason why the Federation does not possess such technology on their ships, but Klingons and Romulans do. It's not because they are technologically inferior or too stupid to figure out how it works. I won't say any more than that, but just know that there is a reason.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Definitely another high point of Season 2. Some cool further exploration of Klingon culture but also some fascinating depth and development of Worf as an individual here. K’Ehleyr is a fun character, and we are shown both she and Worf has a complicated relationship with Klingon tradition, culture and, ahem... Biology. They both are seeking a way to integrate their Human and Klingon "halves" (litteraly so in K’Ehleyr’s case) but coming at it from opposite ends of the spectrum, so to speak. K'Ehlyr is disdainful and critical of her Klingon aspect, whereas Worf, perhaps over-compensating for being raised by humans, is perhaps overly dogmatic and unrealistic in his devotion to Klingon traditions. The irony is, of course, that in the end Worf is the more flexible one when it comes to the problem of the Klingon warship, and comes up with the "out of the box" solution. It's great stuff. K’Ehleyr and Worf have great chemistry on screen and their relationship is complicated in a way that feels believable. As you said Bunny, Klingon love is wild, but to quote Shakespeare "True love's course never did run smooth." Suzie Plakson does a great job as a guest actor. Troi is well used here, and it's not the focus of the episode but notice the continuing theme with Picard: Never try to limit is choices and options. He don't Play that. :) Great reaction Bunny! Glad you liked this one.

Definitely a lot to like about this one. I love the secrecy and tension surrounding the nature of the mission. When an episode opens with the low-key mysterious "shit's going down" music, it's usually gonna be a banger. Worf's out of the box solution to the problem really let him shine. Speaking of shiny, K'Ehleyr's red outfit is a stunner, then and now, and Suzie Plakson wears the absolute shit out of it. 🥵 I'm not always a huge fan of the Klingon stuff, but it's great when we get to see a character that can meet Worf on his own level. Another one where Troi is conspicuously absent -- probably because she'd have the ability to sense whether the Klingons were awake, which would prematurely defuse the tension. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mark Gosine

Always a pleasure to watch this one. Although, with the technology at this state, why would anyone lower their shields? Believe your eyes? Yeah, right! It hearkens back to the open poker scene.

Carlos Stevens

In The Original Series, there were 3 significant Klingons... Korg, Klang, and Kolos (might have gotten the spellings of their names wrong). Not a one of them ever bluffed. I'm betting Bunny remembers the names of each of those episodes.

Carlos Stevens

No Bunny, they never hated each other... That was just Klingon flirting.

Carlos Stevens

One of the best episodes of the season. So...which do you think is more complicated? Klingon mating rituals, or Vulcan mating rituals?

reply

Klingons never bluff? What if he just means REAL Klingons never bluff like saying REAL Men never bluff!

timothy w moyer

Fun episode. Only great space battles can be better than a full-on High Drama Shipboard. Great watch along on this one , Bunny.

Paul Hess

Great reaction for a fun episode with both character development and lore dropping! I agree with others that the 75 year hibernating Klingon ship was a silly plot device with 1 dimensional bad guys and poor backstory but it made for a great rest of episode. Star Trek will continue to improve about this in later seasons to be even more awesome! (in my opinion, Measure of a Man and Matter of Honor were both good sneak peaks into how this can be). Looking forward to more "Golden Era" of reactions to B5 and TNG both already good and both constantly getting more epic! Great synchronicity.

Bruce Galles

Another Worf centered episode!!

TJ

This was a great episode to get Season 2 back on track! Suzie Plakson did a terrific job as K'Ehleyr, bringing to light an important part of Worf's past. Solid character development episode for our favorite Klingon!

TrekinJenn

I finally caught up with your TNG reactions after being a month behind because of work. This is one of my favorite episodes of the series. I remember how impressive K’Ehleyr was as a character, and I loved her outfits.

bunnytails

Ohh thanks I never heard of that before!

bunnytails

Has this been mentioned in a previous episode? Doesn't sound familiar...

bunnytails

I really love how you brought up that they are coming from different directions when it comes to their Klingon and human heritage/upbringing. I hadn't thought of it that way!

bunnytails

I don't recognize those names. Kor from Errand of Mercy, Kang from Day of the Dove, Kras from Friday's Child, as well as Kolath and Korax from Trouble with Tribbles come to mind. I didn't memorize their names, I had to look those up.

Squeesher

yw! It's exactly what we're here for, when it's not a spoiler to tell you ofc 🖖

Andrew Westcott

It has been mentioned between series and there is also a future episode where this becomes very important. Don't want to spoil any more for you. If you google it there is even a Wikipedia page about it.
