- Suggestion: check out the website for GoRuck. They sell rucksacks/backpacks with internal compartments for weight plates, specialized rectangular weight plates, and sandbags so he can practice hiking while carrying a weighted ruck. Combat load is 35lbs of body armor (weighted vest), weapon, and ammo; and a full ruck is an additional 65lbs in a pack on his back. Practicing with something lighter like a 20 or 30lbs ruck will still give him a head start. - Another suggestion: Shin splints are a cramp in the tibialis anterior muscle (the muscle on the front of the shin). Start weight training the tibialis dorsi to get ahead of shin splints. Search YT for vids on "reverse calf raise" by TheKneesOverToesGuy for bodyweight exercise using no equipment other than a wall. For more advanced weight loaded work, use targeted plate-loaded tibialis machine from TitanFitness or Tib Bar from ATGEquipment. I can provide links here or in private messages if you want.
