Mindie grew up in the Bavarian countryside, where she hired herself out as a herdskeeper to feed her brothers and her mother, who had been left physically disabled after a horse-riding accident.

On her fifteenth birthday, Mindie set off for the city, hoping to make her fortune and study engineering so she could repair her mother’s legs. But the dream quickly turned into a nightmare, and Mindie joined the ranks of street children forced into begging.

She survived on petty theft until the day a young woman dropped a mechanical watch just a few steps in front of her. Picking it up, Mindie was awestruck by the treasure of gears and hands, and couldn’t bring herself to steal it; instead, she tugged on the woman’s sleeve and returned it.

That was the first meeting between little Mindie and the engineer Bertha, who took the young beggar under her wing and made her her apprentice. Mindie now considers Bertha a second mother and worships her unconditionally—but she hasn’t forgotten the promise she made to her family to one day return home, a plan Bertha strongly disapproves of.

Every day, Mindie writes a letter to her brothers and mother, which she carefully stores in her trunk, waiting for the day she can finally leave the Underworld.
