Chapter 21

"Hey, guess what?" Lily-Rose asked.

"What?"

"Your new wig arrived."

Ethan took the wig out.  The hair was long and straight in a dark burgundy color.

"What's this, it's perfectly straight, and what about the color?"

Believe me, it's perfect.  Since it's straight you can style it any way you want.  You can add as many curls as you like.  Look it even has bangs," Lily-Rose said excitedly.

Ethan gave her a doubtful look.

"Trust me.  here let me put it on."

"OK, now put it into a ponytail.   All girls have had a ponytail at one time in their life."  Lily-Rose handed Ethan a scrunchy...No, you have to twist the scrunchy like this...Yeah, that's it."

Next, Lily-Rose taught Ethan how to tie it into a bun.  There was a lot to learn.

"You tie your hair into a bun and then take it out and then do it again," Lily-Rose told him.  "I'm going to go for a walk."

Ethan did as Lily-Rose instructed.  Women put their hair in buns and then take it out all the time.  He had to know how to do it right.  Ethan had seen many women tie their hair in buns while walking without looking in a mirror.  Ethan tried that.  He was passing the window as he noticed Lily-Rose returning, she had a cigarette in her hand.  It was confirmed, Lily-Rose was a closeted smoker.  Just as he expected when he found her cigarettes a while back.

When Lily-Rose returned she wasn't smoking anymore.  She was sucking upon a mint.  "How's it going?"

"Fantastic, I can tie a bun as well as anybody.  OK, now it's time for a ponytail."

"Sure, but that doesn't seem that hard."

"It isn't if you know how to do it right."

"Joanna, we are going to celebrate," Lily-Rose informed  Ethan.

"How?"

"We are going out.  Get dressed for a fun evening at this place I know."

"How should I dress?"

"Dress for a night of dancing!"

Ethan selected a fit-and-flare swing dress in blue.  It was the perfect dress for dancing.  he also found some heels that he could dance in and fixed his makeup correctly.  The final step was to style his new properly fitting wig for the first time for public viewing.  Lily-Rose had to help with that.

They arrived at the True Colors Club.  It was an LGBT club, but most of the people there were of the G and T variety although there were some lesbians.  And bisexuals are everywhere.

The club was dark with tables surrounding a dance floor.  Loud dance music was playing.  Ethan and Lily-Rose were shown to a table.

"No, I would prefer to sit over there," Lily-Rose requested.

The hostess took the pair to the requested table.

The place served drinks of course, with some sandwiches and a few hot appetizers.

The waitress sashayed over to take their order.  She took very short steps but always put one foot in front of the other causing her butt to be in continual motion.  She had a pretty Asian face.  She wore a corseted top that exposed the tops of her massive breasts and squeezed her waist.  She wore it with a short skirt and fishnet stockings.  She had wide hips but also broad shoulders.  Ethan was sure this was a trans-woman or more likely a drag queen.

Ethan listened carefully to the waitress's voice to see if he could detect any hint of masculinity there.  Ethan had been practicing his voice and knew what to listen for.  He also wanted to see how his mouth moved when she was speaking.

"Can I take your order?' the waitress asked in an obviously masculine voice.  The waitress didn't try and disguise her voice at all.  But what really threw Ethan was that the waitress's mouth didn't move while talking.  It wasn't her real face, it was some sort of mask.

Ethan recovered and said, "I'll have an Aperol Spritz,"  Before this assignment, Ethan would never order a fruity-tasting drink like that.  He was a scotch and soda man or something on the rocks.  But now ordering fruity drinks was perfectly normal and he loved them all.

Lily-Rose ordered a hurricane and the waitress was off shaking her butt rhythmically as she departed.

"I see you noticed her mask."

"Yeah, I was surprised."

"Some people like to wear masks and bodysuits.  I don't like that type of thing myself.  If they want to, I say let them go for it.  It's pretty at first glance, but you'll never pass like that...especially wearing a mask.  Most people who use them aren't trying anyway."

Ethan looked noticed the other waitresses, none of them were heels as high as his waitress, nor did they wear a corset so tight.  It must be the personal style choice of the person who waited upon them.  Ethan quickly lost interest.

Ethan and Lily-Rose had a fun night of drinking and dancing.

Chapter 22

Over the course of the week, Ethan said, 'My name is Joanna' thousands of times.  He might have said it more than he ever said his own name in his entire life."

Ethan combined his voice lessons with his mannerisms lessons.  He would say, 'My name is Joanna' a hundred times while his right arm was crooked at the elbow, his right hand hung loosely at the end of his wrist, his left hand firmly perched on his hip and walking with one foot in front of the other in his high heels.   Then he would change his heels and do it all over again, except this time his right hand was on his hip and his left arm was crooked at the elbow.

He determined not to sway his hips, if they swayed naturally that was fine, that was the way it should be, but he wasn't going to do anything that wasn't natural.  He wanted to learn to make this a regular part of his life.  Ethan never considered what he would do once the assignment was over.

Lily-Rose saw Ethan doing his "My name is Joanna" speech and said sarcastically, "Who are you trying to convince me or yourself?"

"It's just a speaking exercise.  I'm trying to get my voice to sound right."

"Maybe you should vary what you are saying then?  How about, 'My name is Joanna.  I love to shop and wear pretty things.  I love to suck cock."

"No, I think I'll continue my exercise as I already have it."

"Just trying to be helpful."

The next time that Ethan saw Mindy, he complained, "My throat is hurting so much.  I don't think I've spoken this much in my life."

"You're making great progress.  Take this and use it after you have performed your exercises.  It will soothe your throat.  It will also make it more natural for your throat to stay in that position.

Ethan learned in subsequent lessons many things, such as it isn't important how high his voice could become, but to keep his lower tones from dropping too much.  He learned not to be too breathy like how Marilyn Monroe speaks and to avoid letting his voice become croaky.

The next time at the doctor's office, Ethan had a huge surprise.

"Ethan," Dr. Morris's receptionist said cheerily as she bid Ethan to enter the doctor's office with a wave of her left hand.  "You're right on time.  Go right in."

Ethan entered the doctor's office.  He could smell the air freshener.  It reminded him of the doctor's secret.

Inside, Fiona was waiting for him.  Fiona wasn't dressed as she usually was.  She didn't have on any makeup at all.  Fiona was wearing a baseball cap (something he never saw her in before)  Her hair snaked out the opening in the back of the cap.  She was wearing an oversized baseball jersey, a pair of jeans, white socks, and sneakers.  Dressed like she was, Ethan thought that Fiona looked much younger too.

"Look at me," Fiona announced, "I'm in disguise!"

"What are you doing here?"

"I wanted to see you."

"Why are you dressed like that?"

"They thought it best that we weren't seen together so I came like this.  What do you think?"

"I think you look beautiful."

"I think you look pretty too."

Ethan gave Fiona a kiss and for the first time, it was Fiona who had to wipe off the transferred makeup from her lips.

Chapter 23

The weeks flew by.

"Hey Joanna," Lily-Rose said, "I'm going to the DMV, come with me."

"Sure thing."

Once there, Lily-Rose picked out a form and gave it to Ethan.

"What's this?"

"We're going to renew your license with your updated name and gender."

"What?"

"We're going to make you Joanna on your license and take an updated photo.  We will also change your gender to F.  You don't have to do it.  But this is what you want, right?"

"I do."  Ethan knew that was what he had to say.  He was looking for a way not to do something so drastic.  It would be easier if he wasn't at the DMV already.  " But, I can't do that.  I haven't had it legally changed and I haven't had the surgery yet.  You know."

"Not in this State.  Here, you don't have to wait.  Besides, you are already living as a woman.  You are starting to look like a woman.  It's time."

"I don't know."  Ethan wanted to resist.  But Lily-Rose was insistent and Ethan didn't want to 'blow his cover' by being too obstinate.  In the end, Ethan did as Lily-Rose requested and his license proclaimed his name is Joanne and that he is a woman.  Well, it would proclaim it when he received it in a couple of weeks.

He would have to switch it back after the assignment was over.

To celebrate Ethan's soon-to-be official name change.  Lily-Rose suggested they go out to the True Colors Club.  Lily-Rose may have only suggested, but she wasn't going to take 'No' for an answer.  So they went.  Ethan didn't mind, he had another wonderful time.

"Good evening Ladies," the hostess greeted them.

"Hello, we would like to sit over there," Lilly-Rose asked.

"Sure thing,"

Lily-Rose and Ethan sat in the same section as they had before.  The one with the waitress who wore a female mask and a bodysuit.  She was also dressed in the same uniform as before.  The waitress seemed to recognize them but didn't say anything except, "What would you care for today?"

The drinks as well as the good time were similar to the last time they were at the club.

Chapter 24

"Ethan," Dr. Morris's pregnant receptionist said cheerily as she bid Ethan to enter the doctor's office with a wave of her left hand.  "You are right on time.  Go right in."

At Dr. Morris's office, Ethan told her about the license.

"That's great."

"But it will legally change my name to Joanna.  Now that I think of it, I don't know if that is such a good idea."

"No, it's fine.  It shows you are trying to fit in.  But if you are worried,  I'll make sure that legally it won't go through although you will get a new official-looking license so Lily-Rose and the rest won't know."

"That's a good idea."

"Let us know if you are making any legal changes like this and we'll fix them.  When your new license comes in a couple of weeks, I want you to make a big fuss about it.  Let everyone know."

"There isn't too many to tell."

"Do your best.  I also want you to get a job."

"A job?"

"Yeah, you are supposed to be on suspension.  You can't go on spending money if you don't have a job?"

"What type of job?"

"How about working as a sales associate in a clothing store.  You'll be out in the community meeting a lot of new people."

"What do I know about fashion."

"You know more than you realize.  Look at how you are dressed."

Dr. Morris was right, Ethan how learned a lot since this all started and was learning more every day.  He didn't need Lily-Rose's help to put together an outfit anymore.

"OK, I'll find a job."  Ethan had already seen a help wanted sign at one of the stores he frequented.

"And of course, apply as Joanna, not Ethan."

"Fine."

"As a matter of fact, sign your name as Joanna on all forms.  I want everyone to know that you are Joanna.  I'll even call you Joanna.  I'll tell my receptionist to call you Joanna from now on too."

"Most people already do.  Doctor, I have one other thing I have to ask you about."

"What?"

"My chest has started to itch."

"What's the problem?"

"It's just that, it has started to itch."

"No problem, it's probably because you are wearing a bra.  It is rubbing against your chest which is causing itching.  I've seen it all before.  It'll go away.  If you want we can give you an injection to make your chest a bit numb, but I don't think that is necessary."

"You are right."

"Look just take an aspirin or Tylenol.  That would be best."

"I'll do that."

"A softer bra might help also."

"Oh yes, you need to sign these papers," Dr. Morris said.  "Sign as Ethan."

"What are they?"

"More reprimands to go into your file and a status report on your progress here.  You can read them if you like."

"I know what it says.  It says I've been a bad boy, but I'm becoming a good girl."

"Yeah, that's it."

Ethan didn't bother to look them over.  He just signed them.  They were witnessed by Dr. Morris's next patients.

Back at home, Ethan told Lily-Rose of his decision.  "I decided to get a job."

"A job?"

"Yeah, I need something to do during the day and I could use a few extra bucks."

"So you'll start paying me rent to live here?"

"Yeah.  I'm sorry I hadn't already."

"It's really not a problem.  I like having you here.  The place has never been so clean."

"It was the least I could do with how you helped me."

"If you are going to get a job, then you will need a resume."

"I didn't think of that."

"No problem, I'll help you."

"I don't think I can list my last job.  Who'll hire a suspended police officer?"

"Hmm, we won't tell them that.  I have friends who could say you worked for them.  They'll vouch for you."

"Isn't that lying."

"It's only a job, not a big career.  Besides, it's done all the time.  You think my friends who get a legitimate job list their last job as a transsexual prostitute?"

"I guess not."

Ethan and Lily-Rose spent the next few hours making up a resume for Ethan.  They started off with his real education and then drifted into employment that would look good for the job he would be applying to.  It was decided that Ethan wouldn't apply to anything until after he received his driver's license that proclaimed his name as Joanna Baughman.

"We should also apply for a change in your legal name for your social security and on your birth certificate."

"Is that possible?"

"There are lawyers who help with that type of thing."

Ethan was hesitant, but Lily-Rose insisted.  Ethan would inform Dr. Morris who would take care of things.  In the meantime, Ethan signed the papers and did what was necessary to get his name legally changed and get issued a new social security card.

"I got you a job at a shoe store!" Lily-Rose told Ethan while bursting in excitement.  "They want you, I told them you are a shoe expert with over a hundred pairs.

"Isn't that stretching it a bit?

"Look you don't start until the first.  That is two weeks away.  I'll give you a crash course on shoes.  Believe me, it's a lot of fun."

Ethan had to go along with it.  Thus Ethan's intense education in shoes began.  It started with hours of research online, then it progressed until they were spending hours actually in shoe stores trying on pair after pair.  Ethan didn't realize how varied women's shoes could be.  The more he learned, the more he started to like shoes.  He finally understood why Fiona had so many pairs of shoes.

Chapter 25

Ethan checked the mail everyday for his new driver's license to arrive.  He hoped it would come before it was time to start his new job.

While going through the mail, Ethan found a letter addressed to Lily-Rose with a penmanship he recognized.  His heart leaped to his throat.  "Was the extortionist back?"

Ethan took the letter from the pile to his room and closed the door.  Dr. Morris said not to worry anymore.  She also said that the man hadn't been arrested.  Ethan didn't know what to think.  Should he open up the letter?  It might be the extortionist telling Lily-Rose about his true nature.  If that was true, then the undercover was over.  Even if he stopped this letter, there could be dozens of other letters to the people who knew Joanna.  That would be just as bad and he couldn't stop them all.  In the end, Ethan had to know.

When Ethan opened it up, he found it was just an advertisement from True Colors Club.  It wasn't any big deal.  They were having a special and wanted all their customers to know.  Lily-Rose must be on their mailing list.

Ethan felt relieved.  But he still called Dr. Morris to make sure.

"Yes, Joanna, it's all taken care of, I promise.  You don't need to worry about anything," Dr. Morris reassured him over the phone.

"He's been arrested?"

"No, I told you.  But he won't be bother anyone.  Look I have patients.  I have to go."

"Bye."

"Bye."

Ethan was both reassured and apprehensive at the same time.  He wished that the extortionist had been arrested.  Ethan did what he always did to relieve his stress, he went out shopping for something pretty to wear.  While looking through the racks, Ethan forgot all about it.

Ethan wished he knew how much of a stress reliever shopping was when he was a regular police officer in a patrol car.  He would have had a lot less sleepless nights back then.

Ethan had never realized how many of the ordinary things that women do could relieve stress.  Not only shopping, but getting one's hair done, or having a makeover, or a simple mani and pedi could do wonders to relieve all types of tension.
