Chapter 3
“Excuse me. Are you going to be in there for much longer? We need the stall.”
“Umm,” he said in his regular voice before realizing his mistake. Then he raised the tone of his voice to a falsetto. “Umm, I'm finishing up. I'll be out in a couple of minutes.”
“OK,” the voice said as she walked away.
Jose had decided upon a plan. The dress he was carrying was the key. He could hold it up high which would block his face. Then he could get out of the store and run through the parking lot to his car. Few would see him. It wasn't a good plan. But it was the best plan he could come up with. He didn't think he had many options.
Jose picked up the dress and then stood in front of the mirror. He held the dress high, so it hid his face and part of his upper body. He thought it hid him quite well. Besides as long as people couldn't see his face it didn't matter much if they knew he was a man. They wouldn't know who he was.
Jose sat back down. He was psyching himself up to leave the stall.
Jose was about to go when he saw the shoes on the floor. “Should I wear them?”
“Yeah, I should. I'll walk out briskly, but I won't run. That way fewer people will notice me. Maybe no one will notice me at all if I hold the dress up high enough and I'm walking like everyone else. But someone would notice a person leaving without shoes. That might draw attention to me. Plus, it'd be better to wear shoes when I run through the parking lot.”
Jose reached for the shoes. He hadn't worn pumps before. He had never worn any feminine footwear.
The heel on the shoes was small and 'sturdy'. He didn't think he would have any problem moving while wearing them. A moment after he got the first one on, he was amazed that the shoe fit his male-sized feet. Jose hadn't noticed that his toenails were painted. The nail polish was partially obscured by his dark hose. It took only a few seconds to put on the second shoe once the first shoe was on. He stood up with the hanger of the dress in his hand.
He pulled it up to his face, hiding it somewhat. Jose moved the dress to the side, he needed to see where he was going. Then he realized his beard could be seen.
“Damn!” Jose thought.
Regardless, Jose had to do this sometime. He had to get out of here and back into his masculine clothes.
"Could you hurry up?” was heard from a voice from outside the stall.
“One second.”
Jose gave himself a count of three before going.
One...Two...Three...
Jose opened the stall door and walked quickly outside. He tried to hide his face the best he could. He kept his eyes down. He didn't want to make eye contact with anyone. He didn't want to see their faces either.
He counted the steps as he took them. He walked straight down the hall, past a few other stalls, and then exited the changing room. The size of the department store didn't seem this enormous when he entered the store. He realized he wasn't in the male clothing department. Now, he was in the women's clothing department. He could sense that there were many women around him. He walked briskly trying not to look at anyone, under the mistaken impression if he doesn't look at them, they won't look at him.
“MISS, MISS!” Jose heard from behind him. There wasn't any way for Jose to know that someone in the store was addressing him.
