I'm about to post my first paralives mod publicly in a moment. Along with it, I've gathered a better understanding of the modding capabilities, so I have some thoughts about modding for Paralives and am curious for yours as well...

My Thoughts

Paralives' modding is in sort of a weird limbo between traditional "modding" and just highly customizable features. For those that aren't aware, Paralives has official support for 2 types of mods - CC like clothing or build objects, and what we know as "Tuning Mods" in the form of an in-game mod editor. CC is pretty identical to the effort and time a TS4 CC creator takes today. The "tuning mods" tools however, basically just lists collections of different settings the game exposes and a mod creator can alter the value of.

What makes them "mods" rather than just advanced settings is mostly the fact that you can package them and share them with others. Also some of the "settings" aren't super player-friendly, using internal names that might take a bit of trial and error to understand exactly what field does what. Some of these mod types will also still be extremely time consuming and tedious to build even with the in-game mod tools. Some will require custom assets like icons that a modder still has to make in external tools per usual. In some ways, this in-game menu isn't all that different from modding with Sims 4 Studio, just built-in instead of a separate app.Mods can be installed either manually or through the Steam Workshop. Once mods are published to the Steam Workshop, it is not possible to do an early access period. This means any mod in early access would have to be manually installed. It's not difficult to install mods manually for the game, in a way it's the same as what we do today for TS4, but it is certainly a higher barrier than just clicking a button in steam.

The Dilemma

This weird Settings/Mod situation makes it difficult to figure out where to balance early access. Because some of the more simple mods literally involve a few number changes and a few minutes of work inside the game, I don't think every mod necessarily deserves an early access period. At the same time, there has to be some incentive for modders to spend time and effort working on paralives mods when that time could also be spent on TS4 mods.I figured while I sort out my feelings on this, I'd release my first mod for free immediately. It honestly didn't require a ton of effort, but I did still have to trial and error to get the right values. I honestly don't know how much modding I'll do for Paralives. Script and UI mods currently aren't supported which is much of what I do today for TS4, but I wanted to go ahead and get your thoughts on it.

Tentative Plan

This is certainly up for debate, as I'll ask below, but I think this is where I have currently landed on Paralives modding. If I do keep releasing mods for Paralives, I will probably vary the early access time by the amount of effort I have put into the mod. If I feel like a mod could have been easily doable by someone else, had they thought of it, I will probably do a simple 24-48 hour early access period so patrons still get value out of it. Mods with effort and time on par with my TS4 mods would probably have similar early access timeframes to my other mods. As usual, they'll all go free when released and in this case, that means they would be put up on the Steam Workshop.

Questions for You

1. Do you even want Paralives mods?Obviously, let's start here. Do you even want paralives mods from me? Are you interested in them at all?2. How do you feel about paralives mods and modding tools in general?Thoughts on the modding setup, modder's efforts, etc?3. If I do start modding for Paralives, what early access structure do you think is fair? What kind of early access timeframes would you expect for mods from simple, moderate, complex? Would you do something differently?

Thanks everyone for your time, I appreciate any thoughts you may have! 🧡

I’d love to have mods for the game. It’s nice so far, but there isn’t enough customization yet. I know more will come, and I’m patient, but yes, I’d love to see mods. As for the delivery method, I think manual is easy enough and if someone needs help I am confident most players who mod would be willing to chime in on the various discussion boards, Discord, etc. Thanks for all you do. I know it takes a ton of time and effort.

Personally I would love it if you posted occasionally tweaks and mods for Paralives. 🙏🏽Mostly because your work has kept the Sims 4 playable for me in general NGL. I was so excited when I saw this post like "Ah yes, Twisted Mexi to the rescue." ☺️🙏🏽

Not interested in Paralives tbh

Reddog69er

I as well would love to see mods for paralives. Now I have not played it yet I don't have a answer for your other questions yet.

Alder's Sims

I did see that there's someone talking about a successful script mod. I don't mind hand installing mods - I like knowing what's under the hood and having granular control than searching through steam who handles mod searches... poorly.

Alder's Sims

I really would like to know how the base para textures work totally under the hood. I have gone through the guides on like tattoos and makeup but I don't think I'll be happy with the para looks until I can yoink out the default textures and replace them with something that suits me better. But the modding guides they've releases are not deep into the guts of the game yet.

I think you have a lot to offer Paralives and should definitely mod for it. Early access being dependent on the amount of time a mod takes is completely fair. Do you want to mod for paralives? Go for it! People will just ignore posts that don't interest them.

1) I do 2) I know very little about modding outside of installing- I know a bit more about custom content. I know that QOL mods are what made the sims playable for me, and I know right now, paralives still needs a lot of work on the development end before a lot of mods may be “worth it” if that makes sense. I played for about 7 hours today and still feel like I would like like to play sims 4, but I still want to support paralives, because it has the capability to be better that where it is now. Which, can only be done by engaging with it. 3) I think they need to communicate with modders about how to do early access. There should be a way to do it with steam, or if they could make it easier to push content out outside the workshop as well. If that isn’t possible, I think your best way of going about it is what you said so far, with effort vs early access. Either way, I plan to remain a patron, but I would love seeing mods for paralives as well as the game improves over time.

MrsMorris99

yeah, I haven't a clue about paralives and I don't think I'm interested but I appreciate you doing what you do my friend :-)

SimT2028

I just exited my first play of paralives and yes, I would love mods! I'm still figuring out how to navigate it, and of course my first lot was the cheap one and I was forced to figure out how to build. While my "para"(??) had what I think could be considered a home, it was a mess! LOL I'm sure it's just me tho. I would love to see what you come up with. Your Sims mods saved me with building there, so I know your skills will save me there as well! :-)

1) Yes! Your mods are a must in sims 4 for me and I can only assume that anything you create for Paralives would be just as needed. 2) I honestly have little input here. I'm not a modder so have no clue about the setup etc. however I personally would rather personally add mods to my game rather than use Steam to get mods into the game. 3) For early access I do like your idea that the mods that require more time would have a longer early access vs something quick that is released immediately or with a short 24-48hr early access. That seems fair in my opinion. All said, I am very excited to see how Paralives moves forward and if you decide to make mods, what you create!

Simature Services

Why won't you mod for Inzoi when they bring out script mods? I think Paralives is ugly. I play sims 4. Sims 3 and Inzoi

TwistedMexi

I've looked into it before. So far it's just not something I'm interested in. I'll maybe give it another look once script mods are possible.

Lumyria

I would love mods and tweaks for paralives esp from you. I love your work for he sims and I can only image it will make paralives even better!

Jocelyn Steinfeld

I'm enjoying Paralives so far and wouldn't mind some mods for it

SLGJV

I love your mods for Sims 4, but I’m not into Paralives

I think with time, the legendary sims 4 modders (like yourself) will figure out some really cool ways to mod paralives. I think it may take at minimum a year for any big mods to drop. I do not feel that early access for paralives' mods are as important to me as a patron as just having your updates and secure file downloads. I honestly prefer to just directly support the modder and know my files are updated for my super important mods (alot of yours). Thankyou for always updating your mods for your fans, btw! That is huge and so appreciated!!! I'd say, do not worry about early access for paralives until you have a really big project or some major modding idea. I would not mind if the new mods were all available at once and 'early-access' was just 'WIP' posts for the upcoming mod or event polls/support regarding new mods. I dont think it would seem odd or stand out if the mod was never actually 'early-access'. If you wanted to make something that felt special and worked with the new steam process- you could do a lottery for the select people who will download directly to their pc before steam release, given they have a rubric and specific testing instructions! You could have a private group chat and maybe keep it small. It would be super cool to work with a modder like that. That would be fun for a sim nerd like me. I would honestly feel special just getting to vote on mod ideas or having a place to recommend new ones. Also, I can't wait to see what you create and am so grateful you have time to do any modding! Thankyou for being such a great creator and taking your time to work on mods that allow us to have so much fun!

Whilst I really like the look of Paralives I’m hesitating on hitting buy now. It feels like a game that has a play through style with an ‘end’? I’m not expecting it to be TS4 but I’m guessing I waiting and watching to see if modders will make it more in-depth for me. I absolutely love that you’ll be one of those modders!

Belle HARRIS

Also totally think that the release should be equal to time and effort. That’s totally fair.

I am very interested in Paralives and really appreciate Twisted Mexi supporting it

CovetCat

In theory, I'm pretty sure that I will want mods for Paralives, especially since I am unable to save a game in TS4 since the last update. However, I haven't played Paralives long enough yet to know what I might want. I am primarily a builder, and who knows? I may not need mods for that, since I have barely begun to try it out. (I was too busy trying to fix my TS4. Total bust. If you're ever interested in a career, try charging $100 an hour for TS4 tech support. You'll make a fortune. EA just sends us to "helpful" articles. )
