Casual Fox

As the world approaches the terminal fallout of late stage capitalism, global warming, and systemic racism; it only makes sense that hip hop culture would have its foundation-shaking reckoning before everyone else.

Issac

I work 12 hour shifts as a night nurse and appreciate the long videos, the first hour working progress is welcomed

Javier Weddington

You know the video is gonna be good when FD cleans his glasses before digging into his opening arguments.

Alex Bates

Lil Bill beat you to the punch by 12 hours 💔💔 (love the vids man, I always love listening when I'm opening at work ❤️)

Albert Grace

Fact Check. The Kanye vs 50 thing happened in 07

Mike Jallah

Brilliant work so far FD, so excited for the full!

Alex Bates

Can't wait for the full vid

bloodyM

Godddd I'm already chomping at the bit for the next three hours. Hypeeeee.

Issac

42 mins in and not sure how it would fit in the video or if it gets touched on later but even back in 2011 on drakes first album the weekend created half of that project which maybe Kendrick heard or noticed. YouTube and Google for evidence. The public didn’t find out until years later but when speaking about hip hop and the culture that’s a sin if you’re claiming to be the best MC and on top of rap. Just some random 5am thoughts

TV

Highly anticipated this

Mobius Scarf

I think the intro felt a little too extemporaneous (felt more like a b-side vibe), but the rest is terrific. Can't wait to see the whole thing finished! I'm glad I'm not the only one who's been spending the last month or so going back over old Kendrick and Drake music for all the escalation points in the beef over the last decade or so. All the resentment paranoia and entitlement in If You're Reading This, the ghost writer line in "King Kunta", the sour grapes in The Game's "100 (feat. Drake)", the music video for "100 (feat. Drake)" being filmed in Compton, the entirety of "The Heart Part 4"... the sneak-diss in "All the Stars" blew me away the most, I think. Like, I remember people talking about "maybe that line in 'King Kunta' was a shot at Drake?" but I don't remember ANYBODY wondering if Kendrick's rap from the Black Panther movie was a shot at Drake, or really anyone in particular. I think most of us just assumed that Kendrick didn't actually think about Drake as much as we maybe sometimes imagined he did. But now we know better. Now we know he is--and perhaps has been for quite some time--the Biggest Hater(tm). Also, the beef has surprisingly made Drake's music way more listenable for me? Mostly because now I kind of can't help but imagine the raps being delivered by some over-the-top anime supervillain who thinks they are the main character, but actually exists as a foil for the real main character. Like, most of his songs are basically just Vegeta speeches. I know it's not INTENTIONAL, but in a way, that just makes it work better. Like how "The Room" wouldn't be nearly as entertaining if Tommy Wiseau was TRYING to make a bad movie. Drake wouldn't be nearly as entertaining in hindsight if his hubris and entitlement didn't feel so genuine.

This was so well done I almost forgot we were going to get more later. When the first hour ended I was like wait why did the video stop 🤣. I’ve been waiting for your full take on this and it is excellent so far.

Jeanine F.

thanks for giving us the preview. excited to see the finished video

fdsignifier

A little more editing will make it work

Idnex

I never know where this beef came from. Now I can have an in-depth understanding!

Nope More nope

Damn left off of cliffhanger..... love it. Can't wait for the rest

Nilo Peters

Haú, i literally subbed for this. Gotta say, came for the drake heat, stayed for the creator. Love the content, appreciate the messages, you do good work and you deserve that recognition.

Haatim Gye Nyame

that was dope, looking forward for the rest. Peace

Tanisha Roberson

I'm not a Drake fan and really I'm not a Kendrick fan either although I like his music more than Drake's. I will say that this video really does help me to have more respect for Drake though. I appreciate it the fact that he really wasn't trying to take no shortcuts in the beginning. He did suffer from that spirit of rejection heavy even now he does. My son pointed out when I was telling him about this video that you can really hear that longing in his voice when he sings the hook on the song successful I just want to be successful He just kept saying it over and over again and you can really tell that he meant that.

fdsignifier

Yeah I spend a lot more time empathizing with the tragic longing of Drake in the whole video. I can't wait for it to be finished

Stephi Anne-with-an-E

FWIW, I found your channel based on other topics you typically cover, pretty much 100% of what I know about hip hop I learned from you and, going further back, Jay Smooth and the Rap Critic. Most of what I've heard about this specific controversy has started like "we're just going to jump into it because if you're here, you probably know the backstory," which I don't, so it's been tricky to figure out what everyone's going on about. This doesn't feel like that, it's been easy and interesting to follow everything in the video so far, and it's really impressive that you've been able to get into the depth and nuance while still making it accessible for clueless folks like me. Thank you!

Vince Bell

So the year was 2007, I was a freshman in college, and this is when Kanye’s style of rap overtook gangsta rap. Graduation outsold Curtis. A year before, 2008 when 808s & Heartbreak change/ split the sound of rap. A small detail but when you think about it in comparison to Drake’s rise in 2008/2009 it is more than coincidental, that the timeline is that close.

TeAna Taylor

This is great. I'm sooooo excited for the rest for it!

enchantedsleeper

So excited to get this early :D It was a great listen on my walk to work!

enchantedsleeper

Not to mention that Drake was all "oh yeah I'm going to infiltrate pop but you know I'll still be spitting my heart out" but bruh... you don't even write that yourself, how can it be your heart

enchantedsleeper

FD even says that the albums both came out in 2007 so I think the bit before just wasn't made consistent with it?

Danny

Really tight first hour so far, can’t wait for the rest!

Astrophel

Omg drake is vegeta

Riah

I’m sooo eager for the rest of this video! I wish i had more to add 😂

Jay Squared

You know Sig is about to cook when he cleans his glasses before the vid. That’s like Wayne flicking a lighter before he starts his verse 😭🔥

Kris Blindert

Seconded! I'm a fan of Kendrick Lamar's music, but haven't listened to any Drake and really didn't know any of these nuances. And as usual F.D. gives just the right blend of facts, analysis, and entertainment. I could listen to three more hours about a beef between two people, only one of whom I give a shit about 😆

L C

*yells in the cipher* Keep going!!

WINOVISION

I really enjoyed this! I’m always fascinated with your analysis on the culture and I subscribed just to check this out. Thank you

Elias Sotubo

LMAO the unexpected deadendhiphop clip. btw, thats a collab i would love to see happen

Anton Dounts

Great work! Enjoyed throughout.

Jeanine F.

but hes a colonizer FD!

Jay

Just got on your patreon appreciate the analysis of the beef

Young Coff33 Productions

Just joined the Patreon. Been watching YouTube for months. FD you got me out of a little funk I was having. Then I spent days on the manosphere. Great work. Can’t wait for the last two hours of this vid 😂.

phil e the theyby

Holy shit you were right, Drake’s story IS fascinating. This is amazing and beautifully organized and told; I can’t wait for the rest! As a heads up, I couldn’t really make out the line from King Kunta in the clip just by the nature of it being from a live performance. I got the words “ghost writer” and obviously you explain the important part about what it’s saying; just wanted to let you know in case you wanted to do something to make it clearer (either a different clip or captioning it on screen). Good luck on finishing! This first hour really feels like a masterpiece in hip hop history.

AT

Full vid going triple platinum

Andrew John

I thought it was excellent! Me and my wife love your work. Would love to see a video about the violence in the hip hop industry in the late 90s to now. You're the best!!

Dea Winfrey

I live the HIP HOP PIECES. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Ozzdall

Incredible. I NEED the next part 😩 I'm so cheeeeeeeeeesed

Nico

I'm kind of broke rn but i can't say no to 1h about Drake and what a douche he is

Markus Koivisto

Same goes for some of the other live clips, captions would be neat to add there

Steven Caito

Way to open the oven and give us a wiff. Brilliant work so far. I look forward to the full release.

Onyana Rosa 🌹

Brilliant! And this is coming from a Drake fan 😅😅

Onyana Rosa 🌹

I find the part about the gate keepers very interesting. Yesterday I stumbled into Jermaine Dupri’s live where he was talking to various gate keepers about radio’s legitimacy in today’s world. The gatekeepers have definitely lost their grip of the culture, but this beef showed that it’s not completely lost. Things have shifted.

Feroz Khan

As a hip hop enthusiast, I haddd to subscribe to watch this ahahahahahaha. First time I've ever joined patreon (I'm broke + from Pakistan so three dollars is a lot of money for me). But either way, fantastic video. So excited for the rest of it, kendrick to me is point blank one of the greatest musical artists of this generation, and in a way, I think this beef might overshadow the rest of his work for some people, and I think that's a damn shame. Because as much fun as I've had with this, I would much rather listen to his projects. On the plus side, maybe it'll finally motivate people to listen to his projects from beginning to end instead of just listening to the hits. Btw, i don't think he has missed yet with his albums, from Section 80 to Mr. Morale, every album is fantastic, and I firmly believe that both Mr. Morale and Damn. will also be considered as classics at some point in the future. Truly lucky to be living in the same age as a generational artist like kendrick. Much love

VoorheesTodd

The editing of this video is looking fantastic so far. I'm so excited to see all of it

Dave K

Great start, i cant wait for the rest of the vid FD. The thing that always bugged me about Drake so much is that is how clearly everything about how he moves is projection. His reaction to Control is a perfect example of this, he goes on and on about how Kendrick "Wasnt real", it just reeks of someone who has to insist everyone else isnt being real because they know they are lying all the time. Plus, rapping historically has been anywhere from 50-75 percent kayfabe and cap anyway. When someone is confident and about who they are, and knows their core identity is true as a person and artist, its okay for them to cap a little bit. The audience will let them get away with it, but the boy has to let everyone know hes SO REAL all the time.

Amaaa

This is scholarship, unc! I already know this is going to be one of my most replayed videos of 2024 when it drops in full.

DDM_GTR

I'm exited to see what comes next. Looking great so far.

SweetKii penn

Damn man!!! I’m sooo anxious for the full video !

Jon Evans

For what it’s worth, hit me with a message (which admittedly may take me a bit to reply to as I’m not tech savvy and often forget to check replies; I don’t do notifications) if you find yourself wanting to watch his content ahead of time but lack the funds. I’ll find a way to cover at least a month for you to enjoy the content you clearly love. Salute to you Feroz, you have an ear for this culture and I like your perspective. Cheers

Dionne Ayanna

Torontonian here, thanks for shouting out the original Canadian hip hop artists. Drake never really embraced them until OVO 2022. I never understood why

Dionne Ayanna

Also Diddy *allegedly* not only slapped Drake but also dislocated his shoulder over the Zero to 100 beat

Jonathan Perez

Great video. When is part 2 dropping?

Harper High

I was surprised that you didn’t mention the House of Blues passing of the torch with Kendrick in 2011.

Trey Baker

This is just a first hour of a full video

Anita

This is one of your best videos so far! Can’t wait for the next video.

Rob Christian

The graphics look great. How did you make it?

Feroz Khan

I really appreciate it man, ill lyk if i can ever take you up on that offer 🫶

Avianna

Imagine if Nardwar joined in on Drake LMAO

Parker

worth signing up to patreon

Punk101

oh boy oh boy Im about to have a field day with this

Punk101

ohhhh my i felt shivers down my spine when you started talking about kendrick and the opening to cartoons and cereal started playing. Its one of my most favorite songs of his

DaKingdomChannel

This finna be gooooooooood Sometimes you gotta pop out and show 🥷🏽s

Zephaniah Collins

I just wanna say, Drake has mastered the art of “Sore Winner” music, & that he had a “Wrestling Isn’t Real?” moment in public with “Control”, & can’t admit it. He genuinely perceived the verse as something with malicious intent, & his frustrated press tour about it afterwards, is pretty telling, he took it personally for some reason. I was a teen back then, but now as an adult I think Kendrick & Drake would have inevitably clashed, “Control” or not.

Kennedy2003

OMG! The beard is doing A LOT OF WORK for this n****r! 🤣😂😜 A-MAZING work! Looking forward to the second part of this great piece. Thank you. 🙏🏾

Theboy1011

This is beautiful I can’t wait for the full version

Scott Brayton

Just listening to the beginning, and I think Drake is ultimately a tragic figure. Shakespeare would write an incredible play about him.

MerrittJ!

I became a Patreon member just so I could watch this early because I was on a binge on your channel right now and I ran out of videos 😂

MerrittJ!

You know, growing up I loved drakes music and I was a kid and a teen and now that I’m a young adult I’m turning 25 soon, my mother said to me that she thinks the reason I liked his stuff so much is because it was very sophomoric. It was easy for me to grasp versus only now am I starting to have a better appreciation for rappers that I had previously shunned off like MF Doom I wonder too, if it’s because his proximity to whiteness because even though Eminem is amazing, he made rap and hip-hop, big for white people in ways that it had never been and he’s really the only white boy to ever not only be excepted by the culture but white people like him too I wonder since Drake has proximity to whiteness more than a Kanye , even that that, aided in him becoming so mega

MerrittJ!

Funny enough now I don’t find myself going back to listen to a bunch of Drake songs in the way that I literally had a notebook in high school that said, if you’re reading this, it’s too late to study as a play on his album with the album cover art and everything

Mya simone

I'm so excited for the full hour! This is going to be great. Kendrick being a rap purist is spot on and has its downsides for me. His close relationship with Dr. Dre and his stance on R. Kelly's music on streaming proves that the traditional rules of hip-hop are more important than change and evolution for him. As much as Drake was very fake in his appeal to femmes, Nicki and Drake did usher in a new landscape for femmes to listen to rap after the video vixen era in the 2000s,

Victor

I paid 3 dollars to tell you I don’t agree with anything you say about Drake. You’re welcome.

Mina Simone

I signed up just for this lol.

Jameel Paulin

Man, this is my second time watching lol. I’m excited to see the full version!

Schuyler Young

Man I need about 3 more hours of this (at least!)

Zion Blartt

Drake's accent at 25:00 is gross

Aaron Stier-Cohen

love that you cleaning your glasses on camera has become a thing

Aaron Stier-Cohen

wow. so good. there really is nothing in the world like a good teacher. fuck.

Aaron Stier-Cohen

literally said the same thing to my partner while we were watching. but it's not about drake, it's tragedy all around. like the origonal sin of calling him gay and white etc coming from this place of defensiveness and aggrievement visited back on the culture in the form of appropriation and theft the EXACT things that caused those early wounds in drake and "proving" that he (re: biracial, "gay", sensitive men in general) is in fact not to be trusted because he appeals to women or is biracial etc and everyone retrenches and is worse off and no one learns anything.* *idk if that's actually true but it seems like the way things are headed from my extremely limited vantage point

Aaron Stier-Cohen

a "wrestling isn't real moment" absolutely sent me lol

SM_kennedy

Always top tier, never diluted or dumb down always real and thought provoking content man 👏🏽🫡

Zipporah

I need the second part!

SM_kennedy

F.d. Can we please get the full version bro lol I get on everyday hoping to see the post 😂

CeWalker

Omg literally same cant wait for the full thing

CeWalker

Is there a way to screen share or place on tv? I usually do this with YouTube but new to Patreon

Vlad

Give us the full cut we’re starving 😅
