Dionne Ayanna

3 HOURS? Let me get some snacks…

TaliaN

This is going to be incredible. So excited to watch it!!!

Michael Golden

Already watched on Nebula, but dammit I'm watching it again. Lol

Rblast

I think even if their is a another Drake in the future I think Kendrick is really about making sure everyone is analyzing our figures. Even Kendrick is a “mortal man” but that doesn’t mean we can’t critique and understand where it comes from. Kendrick whole thing about this whole beef is to bring actual introspection and analysis back and he has been like this since Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers. Hell when you say Kendrick hasn’t made many direct shots at drake Rich Spirit, Father Time, and even Hillbillies takes shots at him. I think capitalistic interest will always be an obstacle but like you said in the gender wars vid: We have to start consuming our media more responsibly.

Connor Kelly-Eiding

Congrats on the mega vid, coach. Will be a welcome addition to my workday!

Anton Dounts

How long is this?! Welp, let's check this Magnum Opus out.

Tanisha Roberson

I was thinking about joining nebula Is it worth it?

Jesus Ramones

I watched the nebula version the other day and I thought you were going to put in that one quote from Tyler the Creator where he said “people don’t like that album because they felt like he was looking at them in their eye” in the section where you mentioned people didn’t love Mr morale

A.David Silverman

The graphics and editing have kicked it up a notch and they were already DAMN good. Shout out to your people for bringing their A game to your A game.

Anton Dounts

Spicy vanilla ice cream had me rolling on the floor 🤣

Anton Dounts

Made it to the finish. Crazy how quickly the last 3+ hours went by. Great work! As an aside...soooo, is Drake like Kenny G of hip hop?

Casual Fox

This right here is Legendary tier work! I caught the Nebula version and Arceus damn! This wasn't Luke vs Vader. This was Starkiller fresh off his Degobah training arc vs 1970s Vader after a pub crawl. This was Avatar State Aang vs Ozai in a wheelchair. You get the point. . . . This was Goku firing the genki dama at Pilaf without the charisma. Now I'm done.

Tyler Avery

The editing was so good!

Alex Pettway

That mufucka FD did it again… damn he good 🤦🏾‍♂️

carmen

You unlocked so many memories of early awkward lover boy Drake. Drake's lover boy schtick was partnered with him showing up everywhere with Trey Songz. Trey was definitely the first person Drake pretended to be! Or was it Phonte from Little Brother!!!??? He also spent so much time praising black women in those early days. I hope some of that was genuine. There were BBWs and video vixens and college girls and dancers and and and... He had a song where each of us could feel praised.

FD you are right about the singular experience the dropping of family matters -> meet the grahams was. I was lucky enough to be up for it, i had tried to get to bed early that night but my brain just wasnt having it. So i happened to be up for Family Matters, by the time i was done listening and thinking about it, MTG dropped. Im in a discord server with a pretty sleepy music channel mostly just a few discussions here and there and people sharing new tunes when they drop. That channel was WILD that night. I'll never forget the message from the first person to put on MTG in that server. It was simply "......" and thats all you could say really. The opening of that song is perfectly encapsulated just by "......" its shocking and horrifying.

This was more than worth the wait. I like the fact that everything is given its context and you knocked this out of the park. Just finished watching the video with my fiancée over brunch and this may be the video folks turn to in order to understand the whole beef.

CeWalker

FD you are truly so fucking talented! This is so awesome

Hodan Ismail

FD stan since the Baby Boy video🙋🏾‍♀️ So excited to see how far you’ve come!

Vincent Perez

FD - just wanted to add that the beginning of 6:16 is from Drake’s perspective hence the wine cooler line, etc.

David

Final product was mid. Unfortunately, similar to the albums from the GOATS after years of delays. I.e. dr dre. Probably due to the overhype. A product of your own success. Respectfully speaking, of course..

Kennedy2003

A-MAZING!!!! Thank you for this great work. THIS is why I happily support you on this platform! Well done.

Fathim

Absolutely worth the wait!!! Thank you!

Submitting this video for a Pulitzer, a Golden Globe, a Peabody. I was 17 in 2009 when "Forever" took over the radio. Getting older and wiser, getting educated on the culture, and watching Drake ride the coattails of popular styles without ever truly innovating was so disheartening. Hearing my white friends are "getting into hip hop" when they really mean listening to Drake and identifying with his shallow existence. tbh I equate Drake and Taylor Swift in many ways, writing catchy songs about how hard life is while making millions, but that's beside the point. I kinda figured FD would make this essay at SOME point, but It's so satisfying that it got to be in the context of Drake being bopped. It enumerates every detail I've been trying to get across to those white friends for years, the same ones who argue 'it's okay to Say It if you're singing along to rap lyrics'. Keeping the link on hand to send to everyone I know. Blessings.

FD I am a Drake fan and feel like for a long time I do not feel connected to Hip-Hop. I take issue with your characterization of Drake fans. I would probably say the Chronic and Ready to Die changed my life. I could say that Kendrick fans are want to be revolutionaries, who talk left, but act right. Yes Drake is a goofball, yes Drake is not serious, yes Drake is not self aware and yes Drake is an actor playing a rapper, but sometimes all you want is a song. I simply don't care about hiphop any more and Drake's music is light and carefree. If I want depth I would read a book, watch a movie, or visit a museum. I recently had an opportunity to visit the museum of design in NYC and got a chance to learn about a phenomenal black artist named Sonia Clark. I love Isabella Wilkerson and James Everett, two of the greatest black writers of our generation. The idea that Drake is more dangerous than the early violence and female hatred of hip-hop is simply just hate. Both Kendrick and Drake are capitalist; one milks the fake need for the revolutionary spirit the other well is simply just fake.

1 mill in one day on YouTube! Congratulations!!!

Mina Simone

You took tbh mighty personal lol

Sofia B

This was superior in quality, in writing, in substance, to most of what is out there nowadays. This should win awards. Thank you!

Cary Miller

Awesome video! Really appreciate that you have great thought-provoking endings. I’d be really curious about yr thoughts re: Not Like Us opening the floodgates for calling MAGAs weird.

I think F.D. Signifier agrees with you a lot more than you think, and the fact that you interpreted him as “talking about you” in the section where he was talking about Drake fans may have clouded your reaction a bit. Through the video he described Drake’s music exactly the same way you’re describing it and treated that opinion of it as a valid and reasonable. I think the end of the video, which empathized how maybe mainstream hip-hop was never “for the people” or really “for the culture,” also spoke to the points you make in the end of your post. If you expected this video to resonate with your experience as someone who feels disconnected from hip-hop, I think you may have been missing what the video was trying to do. To me, the video seemed like it was meant to describe what happened and explained why people who do feel connected to hip-hop (a group to which F.D. Signifier belongs) cared so much. I agree that the part shitting on Drake fans was the weakest part of the video, because it’s easy to misinterpret it as saying “if you like Drake’s music, you’re a loser” (even though that 100% isn’t what he was saying). If you see the video as attempting to help you empathize with the experience of people whose views are different than your own (even if you don’t agree with them), I think you will get more out of it.

Sporksan

I never was into hip-hop/rap when younger and never picked up the habit (I had the normal metal head bias.) because of this video I started listening to Kendrick and I am so mad that I slept on him for so long.

LeVar Butler

I just finished watching this for the first time, and I gotta say, your deep dive into this was extremely thought provoking and enlightening, in addition to being entertaining as hell. This was a FIRE essay, and I’m about to watch it again to really let your points sink in. Salute!🫡

Casual Fox

I know everyone moved on by now but I just saw the Superbowl news and... Somebody keep tabs on Drizzy. I don't know if he'll make it

LeVar Butler

It’s good to know I wasn’t the only who thought Drake mimicked Fontaine from Little Brother. Now that’s a group that is wildly underrated their album The Minstrel Show was 🔥🔥🔥

Hey. New to the Patreon. Actually first and only so far I follow but the socio-cultural insights you provide are definitionally invaluable. Had a question for you, FD, and anyone else here ever since all this PD 😳 shit has been blowing up. Simply put. Do y’all have any feeling about or fear towards what cultural..repercussions may come from all of the “cloaked” language Diddy “used” to throw what he was doing in our face but “over our heads” My worry is just rooted in that this, to me, feels like the first time our language has been so perverted from the inside. It’s like the most whitewashed telling of the history will still grant that black slang was borne out of—among other factors—a need for the encaptured and slaved Africans to communicate these core neccessities of expression for survival while primarily not being understood by the overseers etc. But now. What this puffing diddler has done is use that same language to make the establishment not quite sure if he’s likely as bad as the black community in general has always pretty known… for no other reason than to flaunt and abuse his own power in, I’d say, the most disgusting of ways. Do you guys think this correlation is relevant or is it more likely that because what he’s done is so extreme that his language use likely wont be used to further generalize all of the community?
