Loving the full video on Nebula! I've been a fan for a few years but this is one of my special interests for a long time and I'm excited for the full series as it drops. Something you said around minute 20 did make me wince a bit though, and I wanted to mention it: Farming being older than sex work. Bravo on actually tracing down the source of the Kipling quote! I absolutely get how most people hear 'the world's oldest profession' and wave it off as a joke or bad take, I'll be honest, I'd forgotten its origins myself. But while Kipling had his many, many problems, he was actually (maybe) onto something here. Or at least, definitely closer than farming. We've identified transactional sex in multiple bird and monkey species, including a Yale study where trying to teach capuchin monkeys to use currency led to the first documented monkey prostitution in a lab setting. More important I think is the small mid-2010s sociology boom in papers with the idea that the change from hunter-gatherers to agriculture is directly linked to the foundation of the idea of patriarchy (the very shortened idea being ideas of ownership of land propagating into heightened gender roles, etc). So while we can't say for certain that sex work IS the world's oldest profession, it was almost definitely happening before agriculture 12-14,000 years ago, though whether you want to classify it to the level of 'profession' instead of 'side hustle', and there are some fascinating rabbit holes on the rise of patriarchy, the changes of the roles in sex work in ancient society, and the portrays of women and sex in those periods that go along with those elements. Sorry for the tangent in your comments, I know you said you were simplifying, 'farmers came first' just struck my ear wrong for anyone else who goes looking. Fantastic piece on all other fronts!

I just finished watching the first video on Nebula. It got me thinking to my own history with sex and sexuality. I'm in my 30s and I grew up in a moderately sexually repressive Christian household. Repressive enough that sex was a shameful taboo but not repressive enough that I was banned from public school sex ed. This meant my first experience with the concept of sex and sexuality was through abstinence only sex-shaming public school health classes. I remember they showed the class a "documentary" about the dangers of teenagers engaging in premarital sex and how their behavior devolved into outright hardcore debauchery. They described these encounters very explicitly. The ultimate moral lesson was about finding Jesus and becoming born-again virgins or some shit. I found the documentary again as an adult and re-watched it for the lols.... only to realize a lot of the fetishes I had in my youth came from that specific documentary. Its so strange to me how sometimes repression and gawking shamefully at human sexuality can sometimes lead to the exact opposite outcomes intended.

Oldest professions would've been midwifing, caregiving and other communal roles. Farming would've come later but, foraging and hunting would've also predated sex work.
