I don’t think the term k-pop will ever go away. Kpop is it’s own genre as much as rock, blues, r&b, and pop are here. However like Suga of BTS says, kpop isn’t just a “genre” but it’s everything that comes with it: the stages, the outfits, the makeup, the albums. Plus the fandoms, light sticks, merch. Kpop in itself is a genre that encompasses a broad mix of sounds we traditionally would associate with pop, rock, r&b, hip-hop, edm, etc. So to drop the term “kpop” from the vocabulary when conversing about the groups would be like not calling Garth Brooks a country artist. Whereas BTS has kind of left the kpop community behind a bit, that has more to do with the treatment they receive in Korea and have since their debut. As the kpop community didn’t embrace them, and they have since blown up, ARMY says they aren’t kpop and are beyond it. However the majority of people would still use it as a descriptor to describe them.
