Ishtar's Universe

Mayo on a hotdog is FIRE!!!! I gotta have mayo on my hotdog! Tina did try her food in the first episode when she cooked the family dinner and Tina's comment was, "Yeah its good but I never had food with grass before" - Complimenting the dish but then taking it away by adding the grass bit. I agree with both Kion and Jody regarding Tina realizing that Sydney could actually cook better than her and that she was a better worker than her because Sydney came in and got second in command almost immediately while she been working there for ages. I viewed those scenes between them as Tina feeling like she was about to be shown up by Sydney and that her food (mashed potatoes) wouldn't be good enough to meet her standards so she was spazzing out and making mistakes from the pressure. And they made it look like Tina couldn't do her job which she always reminds Sydney that she could and that she been working there 'before she was born'. In those moments, Sydney didn't react how she expected, she replaced her pot and when she tasted the mixture, it confirm for Tina that 'damn this girl is actually talented and better than me'. The final straw was when Sydney tasted the mashed potatoes and was actually impressed and complimented her in the same way she would Marcus (donut guy), which made Tina feel like, 'Okay, I can actually do this' and like Jody said, made her realize that she could cook too and she (Tina) was proud of herself for getting a compliment from someone who was a better cook.

Great reaction! Great discussion! This episode is one of my favorites from the season and that moment with Sydney and Tina made me a little emotional when I first watched it. Went from cussing her out to tearing up when she said, "Thank you Jeff.. i mean chef."

Sydney cooked in the first episode to get hired in the 1st place… Tina has had Sydney’s food before the mashed potatoes… she didn’t like that Sydney was a young girl, coming in new, trying to micromanage and control everything which is her job… so with the mashed potatoes showed not only is Sydney useful quick & good she doesn’t abuse her position. Tina recognize that after getting acknowledgment on a dish she tried hard to make. That’s why Tina gave her respect.

Great reaction Jody and co but yh I agree with Keion, Tina was insecure, u know old school immigrant lady uneducated and she was threatened and insecure about the young millenial whippersnapper who would shit on her or even replace her. Once she got her approval she felt secure in her abilities as a chef

A episode. I agree with Jody, Tina saw Syd was a better cook from tasting her cooking for the first time. And Tina went to her seeking Syd's approval.
