Suga wrote this about a close friend he had as a teenager who went down the wrong path. Suga supported the friend when he went to jail even visiting him hoping the friend would change, just for him to offer Suga drugs not long after getting out. I think sadly Suga knew this friend wasn't going to change he had to drop him so he wouldn't bring him down with him. Suga was so emotional because it was his last concert before enlisting.

I want to start off with asking and praying that everything went well with the birth of your child JODY. Seeing as this video was released though it was probably pre recorded, I hope both the mother and baby are in good health :) Kion tf is a ladyboy? Ok yea so I am now 100% confirmed that Kion is just here to play devils advocate and just to say things that are controversial. Because everything in this song was so obvious he was talking about a friend, whether that was a female friend or a male friend. I also need both Kion and E-man to sometimes think outside of the box and not always thing everything is about a woman, or Love. Maybe just maybe 😃a man wants to sing about losing a good male friend of his, especially one he was close to. I’d imagine it’s a very sad thing seeing someone u used to know so so well go to jail and come out a completely different person. So the “I hate you and I miss you” still doesn’t even point to a lover specifically either. Because you can hate the person because of what they did and how they are now and still miss how things were with them before everything went bad. I too just recently lost a friend (not dead or anything, just had to cut her off) she did something that was very offensive and when confronted still didn’t give a fuck. Now while I dislike her now I still remember when we were cool and miss those moments. Not everything has to be romantic when a man is being emotional. JODY hit the ball on this one. This one is simply a friend, gosh they need to give suga a little credit. Also Kion with the “ion know I ain’t write no man no song” well…good thing you aren’t a singer songwriter then huh? lol.

Yoongi was emotional because everything hit him at once it was the last day of his world tour and he and the rest of the members would be going in the military. He was singing about a childhood friend who had ended up locked up and when he found out he would go to visit him in prison. My interpretation of the song his friend tried to offer drugs to Yoongi who wanted no part of that and realized he lost his friend. Don't forget even pot will get you locked up fot 5 years in Korea.

Also JODY I know you are usually the only one who really reads the comments and I want to tell you this so you can pass it on to the others because they mentioned Suga not saying any gender in the song. Korean does not have gender indicators the way English does. So He/she Him/her etc can’t really be translated. it’s all gender neutral. So there’s no particular way you can tell someone is referring to a boy or girl unless they say the actual word for girl (여자 -Yeoja) and the word for boy (남자 - Namja) or unless they mention actual names and you can decipher if it is a boy or a girl’s name. okay first of all congrats on the birth of your baby yayy!! hope him/her and his mama are in good health and well taken care of .. regarding the reaction video, oh well i don’t even bother listening to what kion has to say bc i know it is weird uncanny and bizarre honestly sorry not sorry. when yoongi has been asked about the meaning of his music numerous times he has said that it is all in the lyrics, the lyrics are self explanatory. as agust d he has been as authentic as it comes and i truly believe if the song was about a lover or anything like that he would specify it. i take his lyrics at face value and i share the same question as jody, why couldn’t a song be for a friend?? i kinda share the same personality as yoongi and i physically cannot let a lot of people in, but those who i choose to trust and love i treasure with all my heart. having deep felt connections in this world is a blessing and for people who often feel misunderstood and not like they belong most of the time, these connections mean the fucking world man. so yea it is terrifying if the person you thought would be there forever, one day is unrecognizable and doesn’t get you anymore. so i think yoongi in this song is grieving that friendship, that rare connection of being understood and feeling like you have your own person who won’t turn their back on you in million years. i truly wish him healing and hopefully he has moved on and that it won’t hurt him anymore in the future. as for the comments about his sexuality, he never officially came out as a pansexual??? like true, he has vaguely giving some hints or whatnot but we can only speculate (which i do not recommend anyway) as we know nothing about his love life and identity, so i don’t think it is right to label him as anything. wish you a great weekend ! bye

I agree with E-man on this one, just hearing the audio and lyrics I definitely assumed it was indeed just a friend, but after watching the live, i think it’s a lover. Weird how Jody doesn’t think someone would cry like that over a romantic partner, to me, romantic lover is stronger than friendship, because what a relationship is (or should be) is just an immensely intimate friendship.

This song absolutely broke me, and this concert even more, I don't think I've ever seen an artist be this vulnerable and break out sobbing on stage. 🥲Everyone elaborated on the friend already. But to add on, I believe he was his teenage friend who also started out in the underground hiphop scene at the same time with him. It must have really been quite a traumatic experience for him. Having your trust and beliefs broken by a friend can really fck with your social anxiety and even change your whole personality. This story of his friend is also a harsh hit of reality and how fcked up the world really is, and that could have been Yoongi's reality too if he went down that path. Also since Yoongi faced many troubles with his anxiety, experienced how lonely fame and fortune can be, and so he really could have used a good hometown friend. I can imagine this haunting him for a long time whilst sitting alone in a hotel room. He talked a bit about this song and his friend during a livestream years ago, so don't quote this. But he also mentioned he wrote his lyrics in "Spring Day" based on his feelings for this friend, that song was released in 2017. Meanwhile "Dear My Friend" was released in 2020, and this concert was in 2023. So yeah, this story lingers. (Whilst the concert was double the feelings, since it was the last before the military).

Hey Jody, hope the family is doing well and mama and baby are happy and healthy. 💜 About this song: I choose to take BTS at their word, always. Suga has said it was about a childhood friend so I will see it as that. One of the things I love about Suga is that he's not afraid to show deep emotion as a rapper. I think it's very strong to do that as a man, even though some may think it's weak. I also think there was a lot going on in his head during that concert. He explained on a live afterwards. He said he was thinking about his whole life journey up until that point and all the things himself and the band went through. It was the end of a chapter in his life and he said that he was finally able to let all the emotions out on the stage. Army was able to finish the lyrics for him when he couldn't do it himself. One of the most powerful moments I've seen between an artist and fans. 💜
