React to this message to show your appreciation for all the effort Sophie has put into this episode reaction.

Gina Queen

whenever you start crying in your reactions it makes me tear up as well lol🥹

Eleonora Frizorger

I want to watch so bad but I’m on the road right now. Thank you for your reaction

Hezer

Loved the analysis into the specific language used, even if some meaning may be lost in the translation to English.

krizalid117

pretty sure you were told already, but just in case: The guy next to Reiner is Bertholdt

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Beside Reiner towards the end of this episode? That wasn't Bertholdt. That was an entirely different person! Different hair colour, different facial features, there's no way that's meant to be Bertholdt because if so then that's an inconsistency issue haha! Or was this a joke and I'm too dumb to get it?! Because if so I'm so sorry haha!!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Possibly but I don't choose to look at in Japanese because that would bring up spoilers more than likely so I base all my evidence from my knowledge set :)

Danny Rufh Leclerc

I look forward to these throughout the week. Love the nerding out on your timeline. To the basement!

smem

brooo i remember this episode coming out on halloween!! the whole scary glitch thing was just perfect for it. amazes me how isayama and wit studio thought about every episode <3

vikkkky!

i love the mindmap Sophie! and the yap session too! i had lunch while listening to you❤️ its always lovely to hear your thought process:)

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I think YouTube is going to believe I'm insane when they see the map haha!! So glad you enjoyed the yap session!! ❤️

DrSophieDarlingReacts

It's not at all what I was thinking!! After the post credit scene in S1 I was just like "yeah it'll be something similar" but NOPE. It was very cool!

Kevin

It is generally considered by the community an inconsistency in the art design and that that is in fact Bertholt. It’s just the lighting, angle, wind pulling his hair back, and change of clothes make him look a lot different. That being said, there are some compelling fan theories about why this inconsistency exists, but I can’t speak on it now for risk of spoilers.

Hezer

It's supposed to be Bertie, but you're not the first one to not recognize him (I didn't either). His hair is lighter tone and facial features look different due to lighting from the low setting sun. And they also changed his hairstyle in that scene with the wind blowing his hair back, so it looks like a different person.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yeah does not look anything like him!! That's wild. Here's me thinking it was someone new that turned into the weird Quadruped Titan haha!!

Kevin

Absolutely loved the deep dive at the end! Your logical thought process is a joy to listen to. Just wanted to give a quick heads up since I know you skipped the OVA. Lost Girls Part 3 takes place between the second-to-last and last scene of this episode. Just so you’re not confused if you get to it after S3. And while it’s one of my favorite episodes, just want to point out that it, like the other Lost Girls OVA’s, isn’t written by Isayama, but is a fanmade story by another author that Isayama gave the go ahead to adapt into the anime. I think for someone as analytical as you, that’s good information to have. I’m seriously so excited! S3P2 and S4 are in my opinion the absolute peak of Attack on Titan, and are what catapult it to my favorite show of all time. Cannot wait to see you experience it!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I know when the OVA is supposed to be watched and that it wasn't written by Isayama :) I just choose to watch the OVA's after I've finished a series rather than midway through as it feel it ruins the flow for me to switch between a self-contained narrative to an expanded one! So I always leave them until I've finished the current series I'm watching.

alpha charlie bravo

A reactor I'd recommend to you is "A Goodwin TV." His edits are short, but he has a lot of insightful commentary about AOT's themes.

Kevin

I second this. Even after many rewatches, I still learned so much from A Goodwin TV, especially his Season 4 reactions. He truly understood AoT at a deep level.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I'll check out the first few videos he has on S1 AOT :) I don't tend to watch reactors in depth because I don't want their opinions to influence my own haha!

Alma

I'm glad you watched the end credit scene! The creators know what they're doing, if it was TOO spoilery to show someone who's watching it for the first time to the extent it would ruin the experience they wouldn't have put it in. It was a nod to manga readers to get them excited because they knew EXACTLY what that scene is about, and it was a way to keep engagement from the anime only viewers alive during the break. You're SUPPOSED to theorise! If you're right, it's fulfilling to see everything play out how you theorised it would, and if you're wrong, then it's exiting to see how exactly they prove you wrong! Win-win

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Agreed! As a first time viewer who didn't analyse and go back over it, I actually glimpsed NOTHING from that because it moves too fast. You would have to slow it right down and analyse each scenario piece by piece but even then it's quite disjointed!

Anna Kyruin

1 - Even after seeing the entire series I still get emotional seeing Erwin on top of the walls yelling and the crowd responding. For me it is how much he deserved this. He dedicated his entire life to finding the truth, leaving the walls every time to the sound of jeering and snickers of wasted taxes. It was so nice to see him smiling. 2 - You're making a fundamental assumption that kind of seeps into a lot of your interpretations and I guess I'm just saying this to make you paranoid since I'm not going to tell you what it is XD 3 - I'm the MVP! lol 4 - Whomever "spoiled" Ymir being from outside the walls was not telling you anything you hadn't seen in the show. There's a title card (I think in the episode "Children" from S2) that literally says "It is not known where Ymir's home town is located but it is most certainly outside the walls". 5 - Sooper nitpicky but ... messages from the distant past wouldn't be time travel, unless you consider a time capsule with a note in it time travel. :) Enjoying this so much, and OH BOY am I looking forward to the S3P2 reactions and lore bombs!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yes, but I was still running with the idea she was from around Castle Utgard so it was a spoiler for ME because it fundamentally impacted and changed my thought process. Unless I come to that conclusion myself then it's best for someone to keep quiet especially as the show merely hinted at it and there was some ambiguity with the title card and the walls that existed that Ymir was thrown from. It was a theory I was openly running with and it was on that video that they commented it so yeah - I was not happy. I'm not making assumptions but I am theorising based on the evidence that I've seen so far. I hate the word assumptions because it presumes that I am accepting something as true without proof when I build my thoughts on what the show gives to me e.g. evidence or small threads or dialogue - I'm just merely expressing my thoughts and theories which we all know switch from time to time so nothing is outright concrete. I am also not saying that my thoughts are the accepted truth, I am merely explaining my current thought process. There is no assumptions in media or literature, unless you straight up cannot provide anything to back up the point you are making. Whereas I can list scenes and dialogue for each point I make that explains why I came to such thoughts and is a taught process and standard practice of analysing literature and media! :) You are indeed the MVP! Scientists would actually disagree with you. There's been numerous discussions where the transmission of information from the past to the future is seen as a form of time travel in the digital / psychic sense rather than the physical. Time travel isn't always a physical process. Bran Stark does not time travel in the traditional sense but impacts the past. Much in the same way that these visions, if transmitted messages from the past to future Eren, impact him and may play a more crucial role going forward. We're also not talking about something like a time capsule but rather the process of crossing barriers from a previous point in time to the future that are related to the present / future rather than the past. Time capsules are a snap shot of time in the past as it was which is why they're not a form of time travel because they are not crossing the boundaries of space and time in a way that directly impacts the present and future. It was nice to see Erwin get a moment of recognition especially thinking back to 1 x 22 where he was absolutely berated and hounded by the civilians after a brutal and unsuccessful mission. Seeing him get that moment to shine and feel appreciated and justified in everything he has set out to do was what choked me up.

Carlo Marasigan

Really enjoyed your analysis at the end! Also wanted to warn you that you are about to start the greatest arc in all of anime. No show will live up to what comes next.

Dag

Ahh, I cannot wait for you to see what you've forecast/ fail to forecast. THat's all I'll say :p

Jordan Cobb

Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet but Reiner is sitting with Bertolt on the wall at the end. It’s not a new character, they just finally gave him a few seconds of attention

DrSophieDarlingReacts

It genuinely looks nothing like Bertholdt that's why I'm stunned that it's supposedly him haha! The hair colour is wrong, the facial structure is off. It's a "wtf" for me on that one haha!

hman70

Fully agree with your breakdown of react content at the beginning. I watch and enjoy all types of reactors but it's like you say, there are channels that are more transformative and engaged than others. In my opinion the best channels, like yours, almost run like a podcast wih an episode for each episode of the show. It's a match made in heaven for people like me who have been obsessed with Titan for 10+ years and can *never* get enough. (Love AutoSave and Filmbuff, also on my mt rushmore I'd put "Working Title Reacts" love those dudes and their long discussions as well!) When i first watched I also thought that had to be someone other than Bert but alas. Wild what a fresh jacket and some sunlight can do for a brother XD

Adam

It’s the sunset changing his color and the wind making his hair look cool

Zarayut Ziri

I also cry everytime in this ep.

alpha charlie bravo

So many people say this, but it's clearly not Bertholdt. It's a different character. That being said, having that character appear in that situation is unlike anything that has happened previously in the story, so I understand the assumption.

Jordan Cobb

Who do you think it is? It’s definitely bertolt just looking fine

DrSophieDarlingReacts

His hair is a different colour and his facial structure looks different too!! 😭❤️ I'm glad someone gets it haha!! I'm expecting to be cancelled for dissing the meta but it’s how I feel!

krizalid117

It's not who you think it is, alpha. In the manga you see it better cuz of the hair color: It's Bert 100% just with the hair being blown back

Frida BØ

Loved the reaction and deep dive after the episode! I’m so happy you’ve found a show that seems to really scratch your brain just the right way! My favourite part of this episode is definitely seeing the scouts finally getting the proper send off they deserve:’)

alpha charlie bravo

Maybe it's different in the manga, but comparing images in the anime, it's definitely not Bertholdt. Different hair color, hair style, different clothing. (Edited in case my original comment would be considered a spoiler.)

smem

girl i need the whole season 3 part 2 reaction up like now now hahah and you better get ready for 3hr episode reaction breakdowns for season 4 lol season 4 is where the fanbase goes crazy.

Nick

He's not wrong.

Nick

No I think like 90% of reactors (also myself when I first watched it back in 2018) assumed it had to be someone else. There's a few rather poorly rendered scenes in season 3, that was sadly one of them. For the most part the animation is really good in season 3, but there's a reason why Wit studio gave up and handed animation over to Mappa for season 4, which was definitely needed.

HAL

this did essentially air as its own season with this being the finale and the next season being called "season 3 part 2" making it... a secon dpart of the same season by name but in practice in every other way season 3 part 2 was the fourth season and season 4 the fifth etc

HAL

I would 100% count any information transfer into the past as time travel - anything that messes with the linear order of cause adn effect as we understand it, wether its by jumping back in time or just sending a message back in time once you mess with the order of cause and effect allowing for a loop to form logic and structures of events get fundamentally more messy but sending a message into the future does not change how cause and effect work cause comes before effect and that effect can only be a cause for thing safter it, it cannot loop back around also, yeah, to be fair, everyone has assumptions that turn out wrong when watching aot, its kinda impossible to predict the full complexity

smem

there is reasons why some universities offer lectures on AOT :)

Violet

Mikasa smiling at Jean and Eren's scuffle, no one breaking up the fight, Arming appreciating Eren's childishness within him. That entire scene was so nostalgic and hopeful to me. Reminded me of moments during a repass (reception following a funeral), where the family laughs together and reminisces on old memories. The scene on the stairs between our trio and Levi listening in breaks my heart 😭 RIP Furlan and Isabel. Yes, girl, TEARS!! That last war cry at the end always fulls me with so much pride and vindication. Our heroes finally getting the appreciation and encouragement they deserve!!!!

vxctorrr

If the fluid vaporizes when exposed to air then how was reiss able to lick it off the floor?

vxctorrr

Art is perspective 🤣

tonkatsu

Sophie, you’re my favorite reactor! I love your intros, outros, and the way you share your thoughts and literary analysis. It’s refreshing to finally feel understood in how I approach anime.. it’s a medium that deserves respect. And AOT, masterfully written as it is, treats its audience with respect, and you reciprocate that by how deeply you engage with it. Or we’re just a bunch of analysis nerds. 🤓🤣

tonkatsu

I’ve watched this episode countless times and that cheer during the sendoff still makes me teary eyed and gives me goosebumps.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Thank you so much!!! Honestly I think we're just a bunch of analysis nerds BUT also that the show deserves respect and time given to it that people just don't commit to which is so incredibly sad!

Midnight_Kitty

You provide so much more to reaction videos by giving a full commentary. I came here for the analytical appraoch. I watch 8 hour plus video essays on some topics. I yearn for more knowledge.

Eleonora Frizorger

I’m back home now so I finally can watch this video. I’m so happy 😁

Ilurandir

Wait... What?!? Where in the world are those unis? It would be so incredible to have a lecture in AOT!

Ilurandir

Please tell me how did you develop such analytical skills?! I am in awe! And as i too study in literary major, the analysis part is always hard for me! I would be greatful if you could give out some tips) as always incredible reaction, and your timeline map was really on point) I understand you with crying in the moment like the sendoff on the wall, knowing the characters and what the have been through, and finally they receive an appreciation like that, and it's honest, it's a happy moment, and sometimes those happy parts hit harder then the sad ones, plus if the show didn't awoke any feelings for the person it wouldn't have been great show to begin with, or the person is just a stonecold when it comes to emotions 😂.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Honestly it's just practice and experience! When I did my first year of English Literature at Bachelor I remember CRYING because I just couldn't figure out how to analyse the text or what it was saying or what they wanted me to do. Over time you begin to understand symbolism and recognise themes because it becomes a pattern you can see from previous literature you've consumed. Analysis is also just backing up your ideas with evidence! So long as you can use the text to argue and evidence your perspective - you can truly analyse it from any lens such as gender, capitalism, psychoanalysis etc! Please do not compare yourself to me! It really is just time and experience. I've done 9 years of English Literature so it's just something that's become second nature from reading and analysing texts for essays!

Nismo_PAPRIKAS

Probably a different type of titan fluid. The one in the chapel was a crazy giant titan type.

blorbothefrog

I am WELL aware that I'm commenting this like a year and a half late after you've finished this show, but I've been binge watching your reactions and I gotta say. your analysis and perception skills are SO impressive - the sheer amount of stuff you get dead on and even down to details you aren't gonna be told until late s4 is insane. I can only imagine the YT comments were chock-full of pre-watch accusations lmao but seriously. very impressive stuff to watch with the full knowledge of the show
