The animation studio for the first season is WIT, who did Attack on Titan S1-S3. Season 2 of this is done by MAPPA, who did Season 4 onwards of Attack on Titan. The animation will be a treat to watch.

Vinland was the norse name for north America, specific the area they settled, located in modern day Newfoundland, Canada. Several of the characters are (loosely) based on real life people, such as Leif Erikson, a famous explorer who was very likely the first European to reach the Americas, about 500 years before Christopher Columbus! Thorfinn is also loosely based on a real person, so be careful if you decide to look up norse history before you get caught up on the show.

You're gonna love this series. Not only is Makoto Yukimura a talented artist and writer, he's also did a massive amount of research to make sure everything is as historically accurate as possible. Actually, you would probably like Planetes as well.

This show has some of my favorite background art it’s so stunningly beautiful I hope you enjoy it

So excited for you to start this journey! Vinland Saga is considered by experts to be one of the most historically accurate peices of historical fiction ever and definitely the most accurate depiction of the Viking era. Not just in terms of design and events but in showcasing culture and life during this time in a way that doesnt just cater to modern perceptions of what the Vikings were. You can even tell a characters heritage and background If you have an understanding of historical weapons and armour. A lot of the main players in this anime are either real people who existed or legends that with a lot of things Viking we arent sure are real. Leif Erickson is the man credited with discovering North America and was almost definitely real. But what makes Vinland Saga so great isn't all that. It's in its themes and messaging. Also Vikings sort of dont have last names but they do take their fathers first name and adds either "son" or "dottir" at the end to mean "son/daughter of...." so Thorfinns 'full' name is Thorfinn Thorsson. And don't look up anything about this era as the real world history literally contains spoilers.

I've only watched 3 episodes of VS before, so this will be the first show I'll watch for the first time with you!

It's funny, as an American the name Leif Erikson was a dead giveaway that Vinland = America. But I suppose that the original explorers of America probably aren't covered very much in most European schools. Even in America, Leif is kind of brought up as an afterthought to Christopher Columbus, at least when I was in school a couple of decades ago.

Here we go, another one from my top 10 animes

This show ranks right up there with Attack on Titan for the number of tears I cried while watching it. All I can say is, the story will not always unfold as you anticipate!

Because we have our own strong history with Viking Invasions and Settlements - we don't focus on the American side but more so on the integration of Viking culture as a lot of our language and place names are influenced by Norse origin. But also how the invasions led to a single unified English Kingdom for the first time in British history. The only reason I know about the connection to America is because of Assassin's Creed Valhalla haha!!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yeah that isn't something we're taught about in the UK in relation to Leif primarily because of our own intense relationship with Nordic culture and Viking invasions so we tend to focus on that impact and the cultural integration into Anglo-Saxon and Irish/Gaelic culture! :) I remember going to a Viking Excursion in school as a child where I got to wear a helmet and carry a shield and spear. It was in Murton Park in York (where they reconstructed a Viking settlement) and I have vivid memories of it still even though I must have been about 9 years old haha! We basically got live the life of a Viking Settler for the day, learning how to prepare food and going on guard duty, and performing drills. Was a really unique experience!

It looks like a trendy pattern, first WIT introduces the plot and then MAPPA takes over and wraps up the story haha.

I've only ever watched Vinland Saga once, and that was when it first released. This is my first time watching it with hindsight and I'm already getting chills, knowing what's to come. Vinland Saga is one of my favorite stories!

2026-09-19 16:00 As soon as I saw you started this I resubscribed, I wasn’t a fan of fmab and I haven’t sen apothecary diaries yet so I’m glad that there’s something else for me to enjoy! Looking forward to your feelings on this show. It’s a bit like AOT - mature, grounded, and brings up a lot of realistic and important themes about humanity and how we live our lives

Note that this is written before watching any part of the reaction.Very excited for this series, I loved the AOT commentary and was considering staying subscribed for a bit even though I knew I wouldn't watch for basically any other stories. It's no offense to other series, many of which I enjoy. It's just that most others don't offer much depth. Most other shows just aren't quite on the level, both live action or anime. But this one is honestly really close to AOT, and it will be interesting to see your perspective. Every woman I've ever shown this show does not or refuses to understand it, as well as most men. All I would say is keep an open mind; Where AOT presents a relatable perspective to everyone regardless of sex or gender, I think this is one of the best growth and coming of age stories into specifically the inherent male mindset. and it's certainly meant to be written that way. Glad the Pateron came through and steered you to a towards much deeper story than a bunch of fun slop alongside it. They're all fun, for sure. No hate towards them and I watch some others far more often, but sometimes we all have to be reminded that we have no enemies.

Sophie I know this is a highly reviewed anime, but I tried watching it on my own years ago and I couldn’t even bring myself to watch the second episode. (was it 2nd or 3rd? can’t remember) 😂 I love Attack on Titan and I immediately watched the next episodes after the first, but I find Vinland Saga, with its more realistic context (not monsters that don’t exist in real life like titans), so much more horrific and heavier. Maybe I can bring myself to finish watching this anime with someone, with you. 😅😰

Don't see anyone explaining this. While Son/Daughter of... is a really common naming scheme in Norse culture Thorfinn actually means Thor the Wanderer or the Wandering Thor. If that's an apt name is up to the later episodes...
