The guy (Basen) who went with Maomao is the guy Jinshi was practicing swordplay with earlier in the season.

Maomao's personality + her V.A are such a hilarious combo hahaha. Again, I am all about your detective work! It's like watching the show for the first timee So, I've been peeking some comments on youtube just because. I would like to give a little random warning(?). Please don't fully trust some "takes" about Natsu Hyuga (author of AD). The fandom is filled with misinformation (mainly because of mistranslation). Some people still believe that Jinshi was never meant to be a main character or even that author hates him (It's pretty obvious why these statements are ridiculous but q.q). I know mods take care of spoilers, and it's such a relief because some people are spoilerholic q-q Anyway! I've read you are sick :c take care and have some good sleep. Thanks for today's reaction too (⊃。•́‿•̀。)⊃━✿✿✿✿✿✿

Thank you Stefy and I shall be sure to keep that in mind!! I am having to avoid the comment section more and more on YT as people are very quick to over-explain :')

The look on Maomao's face 😱 (6:50) startled me haha. And on that note, I want to commend the artwork of this anime; character designs can vary throughout the episode, instead of sticking to a single style, alternating between simple (cartoonish art) and more intricate visuals. One panel can shift from a goofy comic to real-world intense expressions in an instant. It's breathtaking and mind-blowing. It's like one of those close-ups in Spongebob SquarePants where they depict sometime things in the most detailed and gritty way possible. The joyful expression of Maomao (16:20) that Jinshi sees is truly the essence of a perfect partner. ☺️💘 What can you do when your loved one shows you something like that? It's incredibly powerful, hitting straight to the heart! I can relate to Jinshi's reaction afterward when he hits his head against a wall lmao.

Lakan's boast that he used underhanded tactics to diminish the value of a courtesan whose worth was quickly rising because she had never sold her body, makes me feel disturbed and uneasy. 🤬 That guy is definitely a creep, and I already dislike his bad vibe, especially after getting to know Maomao’s sisters and the elderly woman. I came to the same conclusion than you Sophie about this courtesan. There is a unofficial theorem that suggests in anime, hair color matching is either completely random or perfectly aligned... 60% of the time, it holds true! 💇‍♀ But then I also keep in mind the quote that Maomao often repeats from her father: "Never speak on conjecture" so for now, I will set this theory aside in my mind and wait for more information. 😁

I get goosebumps every time you start talking, I wasn't this observant during my first watch 💗

It’s always fun to listen to your theories and speculations! This is why you’re one of my favourite reactors.

I think there's more to it than meets the eye. I think Lakan is making himself sound like a creep to hide his true feelings and how deep their relationship actually went because he doesn't want people to know about Maomao for whatever reason. Based on everything we have learned so far - nothing is simple and it wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility for the courtesan to also want to diminish her value in an effort to prevent her body being sold off too. I don't think he's a creep. I think he wants to be perceived that way because it's easier to hide the truth behind a facade. Like how Maomao hides behind the freckles to diminish her beauty. They are wearing masks that they want people to see whilst the truth is buried within. The story also links back to Episode 3 and the courtesan's worth being diminished so that she could be bought by the man she loves. That very much could be about Lakan and the Courtesan but whilst Maomao heard a romanticised version, the truth is that it wasn't successful because the Courtesan either passed away or whatever they used to feign the illness led to her dying. There's too much to it. Lakan isn't being fully truthful in the matter. His dislike for Jinshi for bringing Maomao back evidences that he does care for her and perhaps was even the one to entrust her to the doctor to ensure that she lived a life outside of court politics. Lakan would only do this if he truly loved the woman that bore Maomao. We don't know if the underhanded tactics were something they conspired together so that she could remain only intimate with Lakan, or if they were even the concubine's own intentions. I don't think we should jump to immediate conclusions with Lakan. There's a lot of subtle clues that not everything is what it seems. You're technically falling into the trap of speaking on conjecture by judging Lakan :P

Not confirming or denying any theories but something that's worth keeping in mind is that in the light novels (and by extension in universe) most characters have dark hair and dark eyes. I believe Gyokuyou and her baby are the only exceptions we've met so far. They're both red heads with green eyes in universe. The colours we see in the anime are stylistic choices for marketing/aesthetic and to make it easier to recognise the characters

Misinformation and the apothecary diaries fandom go together like bread and butter 😭

I’m really enjoying the analysis!

I mean considering it applied well to Jinshi and his mum - I definitely don't think it's simply stylistic especially as the newborn Prince in 1 x 1 also looked more like the Emperor than Lihua. It is stylistic but also a way to draw connection between characters who are related e.g. Gyokuyou and Xioling in a visual medium :)

Tobe

Yes, the anime has used it stylistically to show genetic connections and you can theorise based on that! I just wanted to point out that the characters in universe don't see the same thing we do when they look at each other as a fun fact. I'm not trying to lead you to answers one way or the other, but I feel like it's a good fact to have at the back of your mind.

Rinsol20

For reaall!!! me too!!! I got goosebummpppsss

Jinshi wanted Maomao to get certified as a court lady to help him with his work. Also, as you've surmised before, this is a fictional ancient China, women aren't allowed much authority outside of certain roles. A court lady is just a glorified secretary or assistant. The role would not really give her much more access or authority over what Jinshi already grants her, as most men would still just see her as a "woman sticking her nose into men's roles."

Love your reactions and speculations as always - the fish is a red herring, if you'd excuse my pun :D There's a white flower that makes many appearances here, namely white camellia, flower language 'you reject my love' - you can draw whatever conclusions you like from that. Lakan is making a proper appearance finally! His story is great and very well told, but more on that much later. For now he's making his move - for better or worse :) In the books everyone from that region has black hair and black eyes, and that's actually used as a plot point later. In the anime they had to prioritise character recognition and hence the different hair and eye colours. But it is purely a thing born in the anime for character recognition, so you're right to read into that because it is done on purpose to show connections. But in reality everyone born in that region (which excludes Gyokuyo because she comes from the west) has black hair and black eyes. So yes, feel free to read into the hair and eye colours, but remember the reality of it because it will become relevant in the second season and beyond.
