Mao Mao stop repeating that Jinshi is pretty challenge = FAILED 😔🖐 😂 Really love that short time in disguise felt like a "date". They're so cute! With Basen back there not being able to hold himself back from buying skewers, too! Haha It's really fun to listen to you crafting your theories. So excited for you to see how the rest of this season will go! (we only got 7 eps left! 👀)

For the last skeptics, I believe this episode provides the final elements that prove Jinshi cannot be an eunuch.🤔 ◾Eunuchs in medieval China were mainly used for bureaucratic roles or as slaves/servants. They were never involved in martial activities, so Jinshi having calluses contradicts his eunuch story. ◾Additionally a lack of facial hair is a key characteristic of eunuchs (especially those castrated before puberty); hair follicles fail to develop properly due to testosterone deficiency. Since Jinshi doesn't even have pores on his face, it indicates he isn't shaving. He is either too young to grow a proper beard or has a testosterone deficiency for some reason. The medicine he is likely taking to suppress his masculinity and pretend to be a eunuch could contributing to this. Maomao really does some mental gymnastics to deny it at this point.😂 The way I justify Maomao's strong belief that Jinshi is a eunuch is that he is a male allowed to stay overnight in the rear palace. That privilege is only granted to royal family members or eunuchs. It's a recurring theme with Maomao; she isn't just avoiding connecting the dots with comedy intent for us the audience. Making assumptions is risky, and uncovering the truths about powerful people's secret affairs is even more dangerous for someone like her. It's safer for her to look the other way.🫣 We can remind that time she thought about how much Jinshi and Ah Duo resembled each other and the theory that the emperor's baby could have been swapped. Every time she gets close to uncovering his identity, she intentionally holds back because she seems to realize it would only lead to problems if she found out. She is doing her best to stay safe and healthy; kudos to her.

Poor Jinshi was tricked by Lakan into asking that awkward personal question while also being led by Gaoshun to a place with courtesans’ service 😅 which caused him to lose some favor in Maomao’s eyes. Jinshi really asked a terrible question. He essentially asked her, "how do you ruin a woman's life?" Maomao's attitude shifted so quickly. 😑 After that conversation, Jinshi quickly picks up on her background because he discovers a few key details he had missed. Maomao and Jinshi share an intriguing relationship. While there are definitely romantic hints in their interactions, I can also see them being the best of friends. I am eager to see how their relationship evolves.

I love your insights, they are very interesting

Loving the series! This and Frieren are definitely among my top 3 anime. I am curious why you think Lakan's actions to "lower the value" of a courtesan were not malicious? I don't know if I missed something but I am curious as to your reasoning.

I feel he's very coded with the way he speaks and the way in which his actions have grown more annoying and a hinderance to Jinshi was mentioned because he was aggravated about Maomao being brought back to the palace which indicates a level of care and concern. Also beneath the language he talks very highly of this courtesan. We've also been given context clues in previous conversations about the courtesan devaluing herself to lower her price to be bought out by the man she loves. So it's not beyond the realm of possibility for it to be something they concocted together.

Love seeing your comments on these reactions and watching you theorise right along with Sophie. Maomao's ability to be willfully ignorant is unmatched. I've never seen a character repeatedly will themselves out of connecting the dots right in front of their eyes

Poor Maomao. Her emotional walls are so high she can't simply say she's worried about her dad because she loves him. She has to point out that he's also her teacher. Just like how she couldn't be moving her bed roll next to him because she would miss him; it's because she was cold.

Your first point isn't necessarily true. There are Eunachs that become generals and take up military positions in history. Is it common? No but it does happen so we can't categorically say that they aren't involved in martial activities. It would definitely be odd though for someone of Jinshi's rank as a 'Eunach' to have calluses but not uncommon in general :) Jinshi is also young. It could be that he still has somewhat of a baby face in relation to facial hair. Or it could also be an aesthetic choice by the writer haha!

Oh thank you Tobe, I appreciate the compliment! It's mutual, I enjoy reading your views too :) Maomao is really a captivating character, full of paradoxes, which I find fascinating to observe. She is a clever and observant young woman with a deep passion for medicine, poisons, and pharmacology. Her intellect shines when she's engaged with these subjects, but she shows little patience or curiosity for other matters, especially those she deems trivial or unimportant. Do you recall the episode where Jinshi and Gaoshun attempted to persuade her to take the exam to become a court lady, but she did not succeed? She said it herself: "My ability to learn about things I'm not interested in is below average."

You're right to highlight it! I'm not a therapist but often individuals with high emotional walls have trust issues or fear being hurt again, which makes it challenging for them to open up easily to others. My guess is that Maomao has likely experienced difficult or hurtful situations in her past that led her to protect herself by building emotional barriers. Like a defense mechanism to prevent vulnerability, disappointment, or betrayal. My prediction is that Jinshi will end up helping our heroine to thrive in her relationships. 🫶

It was cut from the anime, but people who read the light novel know who Jinshi went to visit, and no, it was not a sexual visit, even though it was a women he visited. I love your deduction skills. Lakan was written to be vile and hated by readers, but you are looking past that aura he projects and see a different man.

Thank you for the great reaction as usual :D This is both very fun and very sad episode at the same time... I think this is the first time Maomao refers to Loumen as her 'adoptive father' - she'd refer to him just as her 'fater' before that. Interesting, no? That's only when she's talking about him to other people though, in her head he's always her 'old man'. The flowers at the start look like primroses, flower language 'youthful love' and 'the start of love and sadness', which describes this episode quiet well, doesn't it.

I'm seeing this after you've already made it to season 2, but holy cow you're sharp as a tack!!! I love seeing well-educated and perceptive reactors online, gotta be my favorite genre. It's so worth the subscription girl. Keep it up ❤️
