The thing you forgot to mention about indentured servitude, the people they owe the debt to will charge for room and board, food, and any other necessities, thereby increasing the person's debt. It was very easy for debt slave to find themselves in eternal debt, as their debt accrued would barely surpass the value of their rising debt. (It's kind'a like student loans and how some people choose to only pay the monthly minimum without realizing that the debt is getting larger.) The whole conversation reminded me of another series called "Jk Haru is a worker in another world." The MC is isekaied along with a boy, and she finds that their are only three jobs for a woman in that world. A prostitute, a waitress (who may be asked to provide sexual services) or a wife. It's a very interesting story about her daily life working as a sex worker and the hurdles that comes with it. "Oh no, it's a cliffhanger. I guess you'll just need to watch the next episode right away. Oh no." lol

This is one of the episodes I just couldn't avoid rushing into the next one with ^^; But wow, we are only 8eps in, and already so much info. There are theories I had myself, and also theories I would not have thought of - but absolutely makes so much sense when mentioned. I am looking forward to seeing your opinions after the next episode as well.

I think the Empress Dowager is too kind. Seeing how messed up things were in the royal family, Jinshi and the Emperor came off quite good, haha.

I did discuss it in the context of the brothel as I mentioned that they would owe for their education and board to the brothel itself and still have to work their term. That the reason buying them out is so high is not solely due to the length of their term, but that the brothel has to replace the money they'll lose in generated income if the courtesan was to continue working as they intend :) I may not have said indentured servitude is X, Y, Z but it was inferred through my discussion of how the brothel system works and the money they have to pay to the brothel itself! Perhaps I should have been a bit more clearer but I thought it was evident the point I was making >.<

Aw man. I try to save up a few of these reactions so I can binge them. Of course I couldn't help myself and now I'm all up to date. I wish I had discovered this channel after the season 2 reactions were all finished so I could jump right to the next one! Although I'd still have to wait for season 3. It's fun having episodes to look forward to but I am such an impatient person haha

I would like to point out a line for our lovely viewers, "If I remember correctly, he is only one year older than me." Maomao says this in reference to the emperors brother. This also gives us a basic time line for the reference of when Lakan was sent away with Lahan near the time of Jinshis and the brothers birth, in which a year later maomao would be born. Whether it be the baby switch or Ahduo uterus, Lakan was sent with Lahan due to the direct actions of Jinshi's birth, in such effecting Fengxian birth and evitable sickness which effected maomao. Anyway the point is they are very closely intertwined and this is just another hint I didnt want to overlook. This also gets forgotten when people say that Jinshi is problematic for liking maomao when she was 17, now 18 as a year has passed since the previous garden party, and he is currently as a eunuch saying he is 25. However, we know due to a previous scene, the he is 19 pretending to be older. You know who else is 19 and as such only a yearish older than maomao, the emperors younger brother. (My apologies for my English, finals week is kicking my a** and my brain hurts lol)

There are a lot of smart things to say about the episode, but Anshi's line: "I wished he would go away. For the longest time... Almost every night, I wished for it" kills me every time, there's something so haunting about it, like it's almost a childish way to put it, bc she could have said that every day she wished she could kill him and it would be understandable, but she just wanted him away from her.
