I started watching this series because I wanted to watch these videos. Now I'm hooked, am on episode 37. Best decision ever! Can't wait to eventually hear what you have to say about... well, everything I've seen 😄

This show is a masterpiece! There are so many topics to discuss! And I never even really finally understand it all until we get to the last episode. And please watch the outro! Maybe not for the stream but offline. It actually tells its own story.

I wanna appreciate that you ask very good questions. I love seeing your reactions, especially the analysis and the long yapping sessions. I know that the degree plays a part, but your mind is awesome.

Guillermo del Toro for years back then was trying to make a Live Action TV Series version on HBO of Monster because he loved the story of the series that much but unfortunately it never happened. I think it was bad timing but if he tried again around this time frame, with series like The Last of Us for example that is doing so well, I definitely could see it being one of the best series out there.

I'm not sure if I should comment theories and such since I havent watched this anime, so I'm literally watching it with you, but i'm afraid my comments might be considered spoilers(? I think I'm just going to not comment anything related to theories or predictions, and just how I enjoyed the episode lmao

I think because we're both watching it for the first time it's probably safer just in case we end up influencing each others perspectives haha!!

🗣"They are doctors too, they should be equipped and capable of it!" Like you Sophie, I found myself initially frustrated by the episode. The stark choice presented—Tenma operates, or the mayor dies—struck me as rather contrived and unfair. It almost seemed to suggest a shocking level of incompetence among the other surgeons in the hospital. At first, I was ready consequently to condemn ENTIRELY the hospital's administration for scapegoating Tenma, to cover up their own failures and questionable practices. After all, Tenma upheld his Hippocratic Oath by prioritizing the child whose condition was more urgent. Choosing the mayor would have felt like a betrayal of the fundamental principle that all lives are equal.

But, I’ve started to see things from a more nuanced angle by looking at real-life examples and thinking about how responsibility would be shared in such scenarios.🧒🏼👨🏻🏨🤔 We only catch a glimpse of the hospital’s operations, particularly those involving the exceptional Dr. Tenma. We should consider that a reputable hospital employs many competent surgeons, they simply aren't Tenma‼️👨🏻‍⚕️🇯🇵👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 He’s portrayed as A PRODIGY, handling the most complex and demanding cases; those where his involvement dramatically increases the chances of success. We don't see the routine surgeries performed by other surgeons because they aren't central to Tenma's story. It seems already clear that Heinemann, the hospital director, exploited Tenma’s extraordinary talent to enhance the hospital’s reputation and his own career. He leaned on Tenma’s unmatched skills to virtually guarantee success in these high-stakes procedures, while the other surgeons, lacking that level of expertise, presented a greater risk. Both the child’s and the mayor’s surgeries were exceptionally challenging. In summary, I believe Dr. Kenzo Tenma bears some PARTIAL responsibility for the mayor’s demise due to the chain of causality—since he was the most skilled surgeon assigned to perform the operation. But, the moral, professional, and ethical blame should be shared among the hospital's corrupt hierarchy, which fostered a system that prioritized prestige and profit over a balanced and ethical approach to patient care.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

He doesn't have partial responsibility because he was already working and assigned to a case. Whether someone is a prodigy or NOT, all surgeons must be equipped to handle the scenario they face. If they do not have the staff available to handle such an operation then they need to take a look at their Doctors and their training which they already do not prioritise. The hospital Director advocates for 'academia' over 'honing skills' and that's where the issue comes in. They should not be relying SOLELY on a single expert. Tenma's skills have been honed solely because his research keeps being rejected or side-lined. He's not an expert because he's a prodigy but because he's dedicated himself to the field whereas others have been kissing the Director's arse to get ahead. No hospital would have a single expert unless severely underfunded which this hospital is not. Every department will have numerous experts equipped to handle severe and urgent cases without taking away essential and necessary care from another and risking their life in the process. Your re-evaluation is one I cannot agree with especially in placing blame on Tenma. None of the other doctors could do it because they have been putting their skills as Doctors on the back burner to prioritise what the Director demands. So yes - the way the hospital operates is extremely problematic as is the running of it. Tenma isn't the issue. The hospital is. You were right the first time - Tenma upheld his oath. The hospital used him as a scapegoat to cover up their own failings. Much in the same way they LIED to avoid being held accountable for the Turkish Construction Worker's death by saying it happened EARLIER than the Opera Singer's.

Makes sense, great reaction Sophie!

My point is essentially to emphasize the extraordinary nature of Dr. Tenma's abilities. I believe it would be incorrect to conclude that the other surgeons are not good surgeons; rather, the creator aims to convey to the audience just how exceptional Dr. Tenma is in his field. It's not about them being *bad*, it's about Tenma being *unusually good*⚠️ The surgeries that Tenma performs can only be carried out by the top 1% of the 1%. This isn't just about training; it's about a combination of innate talent, relentless dedication, and perhaps even a certain intuition that goes beyond textbook knowledge. This is why the hospital specifically required Tenma to operate on *important patients* , as his presence nearly guarantees the success of the operation. To put it another way, they are trying to maximize the chances of success by using their most valuable resource.

Mickael Landry

I believe there exists a level of mastery and expertise that can only be achieved through a unique talent, even with thousands of hours dedicated to training and academic instruction. 🤷‍♂️ While the hospital's prioritization of academia over practical skills might be a contributing factor to the overall situation, it doesn't negate the fact that some individuals possess a rare aptitude. If we apply this to real life, even in a large hospital setting, there exists a specific group of surgeons who, because of their extensive experience or exceptional skills, are sought after to perform high-risk surgeries for patients from affluent backgrounds. This isn't necessarily a reflection of the *incompetence* of other surgeons working in the same hospital, but rather a recognition of the *exceptional competence* of a select few.  It's about optimizing outcomes and leveraging specialized expertise. NOW I AGREE COMPLETELY THERE WITH YOU SOPHIE. 😜👇 The hospital's fault, lies in over-relying on Tenma, rather than developing a system that can better support and distribute his knowledge. As you mentioned, they cannot and should not depend entirely on one individual for challenging operations on high profiles; that places an excessive burden on Tenma. You are absolutely correct.

It’s going to be so much fun to listen to your theories and analyses for this show! There’s so many interesting themes and topics to talk about. Eva is my problematic favourite character haha. I used to dislike her too but she unexpectedly grew on me later on.

Psyco[Redacted]

I'm watching this show with you because I want more Sophie content, so I know nothing about this show but, THE CANDYYYYY, they are still being targeted
