Been really looking forward to this one! Looking back I think the moment where Denji empathized with Power over their pets is the moment that sold me on the heart of the show, but chapter 12/this episode was the first time it made me sit forward in my chair and go “this series is doing something different” look forward to many more episodes like it to come :)

So we're not fans of miss makima eh ?, she seems to draw 2 reactions a bit like the characters. People are either confused and scared or completely head over heels. The sequence where she asks him to kill the gun devil is fucked on many levels but for now the power dynamic is awful, she's his boss and the one who "saved" his life he feels he owes everything to her and he's a little shit so obviously her coming onto him going to work. We get akis backstory, tragic as always you can see where the hate and the fire for devil hunting comes from, you know what ? I get it. Im so hyped this react is happening. Chainsaw man hold a very special place in my heart. It got me properly into anime and manga. And maybe I'm little bias I've been a big fan of the analysis..... cause I agree with it 😆. Not sure if someone beat me but the prank was they rubbed poop on him i think. 20. 34 is he ?. Power joining in the denji beating is funny.

Not only is she his boss - she's an adult actively grooming a child! The power dynamic is not just awful it's fucking abysmal! I actually hate that people like her as a character because it replicates the horrible reality that boys are not taken seriously as victims of sexual abuse / grooming. We see it so often with stories about female teachers sleeping with their male students and everyone making jokes about it like "oh I wish that were me" which minimises the harm and the damage by perpetrating the narrative that boys cannot be victims when they absolutely are. Yet those same people would be absolutely outraged if the genders were reversed. If Denji were a girl and Makima was a man people would be in an UPROAR about Makima but because she's 'hot' suddenly it's okay. Nah she can get in the actual bin. I'm a Makima hater through and through. IF Makima has no haters it's because I'm dead. THEY RUBBED POOP ON HIM? No wonder Aki's pissed off haha!!

Denjis makes his progress in increments. Yeah denji make connections first great then he's offered a kiss with tongue and hes back with his tongue out literally. Himeno being introduced is a very interesting character and I'm interested to see what you think of her going forward. The "I wish that was me" is big in the fandom it seems. Generally as ironic jokes but it's there. Anyway keep the makima hate train going I'm all for that shit

Welcome to the makima hate club! I hate the way she manipulates Denji and everyone else around her. But I also have to admit she is written very well and is so mysterious and makes you really want to see more of the show. Honestly makima was a big reason I started reading the manga after I watched season 1, I just had to know more about her.

Atena

Welcome to the Makima’s Haters club, took you long enough, Sophie jk jk eheheh I’ve been a hater since chapter 1 when she said Denji could be her pet, so gross and manipulative 😡

Mina E.D

Hating Makima is 100% an appropriate reaction to what she's doing. I've seen reactions just kind of missing the point of it being manipulation and instead calling Denji a "lucky guy". When it comes to the "if I chase after something else will it be the same" thing tho, I think Denji just needs to put things into perspective. Cause the "toast with jam" thing seemed to be everything he imagined and more.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Oh she's written extremely well but god I hate her and everything she stands for!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yeah I was also a hater since the first episode when she said he was a dog - nah get in the bin! I kept waiting for her to be redeemed but NOPE

DrSophieDarlingReacts

He just needs to understand that what he's seeking isn't sex but rather intimacy. He wants emotional connection. Poor boy just doesn't understand because he's been so isolated for so long! Yeah that irks me. She's an adult. Denji is a teenage boy. She knows what she's doing and is grooming him. The power imbalance is one thing but the fact that she's clearly significantly older makes it all the more disgusting. I actually mentioned that in an earlier comment. There are so many real instances where boys are not seen as a victims when preyed upon by older women. The harm done to them is minimised and negated as 'they're so lucky' and yet those SAME PEOPLE would be up in arms if you reversed the genders. It's so problematic and disgusting because it sets the tone that boys and men can't be victims which keeps so many from actually speaking out and they suffer in silence. It irks me because they deserve better support and understanding not further toxicity peddled by other men.

We have finally reached this episode so I can now say that one of the big reasons why csm is so special to me is because it tackles the subject of, not only sexual abuse but sexual abuse towards BOYS, which is not that common to see in media in a serius manner, sadly. I have people close to who have gone through similar experiences like Denji in this episode, where they were young and innocent and they didn't know (at the time) that what happened to them was mesded up. So having a mainstream story that addresses this topic in a really realistic way, feels very refreshing

Drift3r

Just realized that Makima's name reminds me of the word "machination" in English. Though there's probably zero connection.

The way Meowy was ready and immediately hopped on Power's shoulder as she walked away straight up GUFFAWWWING sent me

Seryu Ubiquitous

glad to see that there are more peoples then expected who dont like makima. i admit, that she has a really unique design but here character... dont know if she is human, fiend or devil, if she is good, bad or neither so i dont know how my tought about here will eventually change in the future but right now i can just think that she is the manipulation devil because she knows exactly what to do or say to make peoples do what she wants.

Szaleos

19:11 Power and Denji put a bit of Meowy’s feces on Aki’s nose while asleep. That’s why he was so pissed at them.

Loving the reactions and theories so far, cant wait to see you get to the movie once done with the first season as the animation is top tier and your theories would be great to hear on the plot.

Vivasvan Gautam

Catching up with your CSM and JJK reactions over the weekend lol. For me, Makima is very similar to Askellad in one specific way: manipulating a kid to achieve an objective. Yes, no doubt that she is manipulative, a groomer, and sexually abusing Denji. And there is an air of mystery surrounding her, too. And it is extremely difficult to read her, know her and anticipate her true motives. Both characters have excellent demonstrations of the 'drip feed' approach to character writing, imo.

charlie

she is for the bin

Ethereal

Askeladd and Makima are nothing alike asides from the one superficial similarity you mentioned (manipulating a young man to further their causes).

Vivasvan Gautam

They do actually, but discussing it here would go into spoiler territory. They are more similarities in ways that are not superficial. If we strictly confine ourselves to text they are two completely different characters. But if we appreciate the subtexts, themes, and deeper motivations in storytelling, it's where I believe Askeladd and Makima converge in ways more than they diverge on the surface.

Brandon the Cannibal

I know I am late to the conversation but this is exactly why I think Denji is such a great character from an outside perspective. As observers we can clearly see the obvious manipulation that happens to Denji while he may intuitively may be aware of it, his desire and need for human connection is so desperate he is willing to overlook so much of it whether he realizes it or not. Not to get too dark but as a male that has experienced SA, male characters often get overlooked in this kind of situation which is exactly what you were saying. Not saying everyone overlooks it, but just like Denji there is enough people that turn a blind eye to it that it has become seen as such a non-issue.

Chris Walker

"I don't think she's into Denji!" Setting aside whether or not that's the case, which I think you're right to be dubious, it could be argued that she saw how disappointed he was and wanted to provide him with an experience that was closer to his expectations. Whether she did it for his benefit or hers could also be argued, of course 😅 "Makima, get in the bin, you foul human" had me rolling lmfao 12:30 "No wonder it was in America." truer words never before spoken 😅 14:52 "The calmness of this scene is going to be completely disrupted" Little TOO on the nose there, eh? 😅

Chris Walker

His response was warranted then 😵

Chris Walker

As far as male victems of SA it's honestly even worse than not being taken seriously, male victems are often ridiculed, if they are even able to bring themselves to come forward. "Lucky guy!" "You know you liked it" "what are you, a pussy?" There's an expectation of masculinity that society says men are supposed to be powerful and dominating, we're supposed to conquer and have as much sex as we can, and anyone who doesn't live by that creed is "not a real man."

Brunch

this comment is pretty late, but you'll realise how great the writing was when you realise that they are stuck in floor 8, which is also the sign for infinity when you rotate it.
