Lustful~Mirage

All good now and the Espeon dress is still stunning 😍👍

Goldie

I havent watched your reaction yet but i just came here to say: I would lay down my life for Beam 🥹

Goldie

His name is ビーム which is Beam in English

Brandon the Cannibal

I don't know if you knew yet or if anyone said anything about it, but the pool scene with the spider has a double meaning. The spider (Reze) catching the monarch butterfly (Denji) in her trap and "killing it" is the part you already pointed out but the monarch butterfly is sometimes deadly for spiders to eat, and the last scene of the spider and butterfly shows them both dead. Powerful foreshadowing for Reze and Denji's relationship.

Goldie

ohhhhhhhh sorry I havent got to that yet so I was confused like: no surely I am not misremembering that his name is biimu in Japanese 😂

Creepy ϟ

The music in this movie is so goood 🙄

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yeah I got myself turned around and thought his name was Bream for some reason haha!!

Nina

This movie is amazing. Always makes me cry. Denji gathered all his things in his little bookbag and was ready to run away with her 🩷😭 Makima you stole their future from us!!!

Caleb Mackin

a really cool detail of the spider and the butterfly is that monarch butterflies are poisonous to spiders that eat them, show he fell into her trap but it ultimately led to her own demise

Goldie

Beam aka Tanjiro 😂

Kirk Murray

I’ll leave you with this to possibly rewatch or reanalyze the movie. How did Makima know about the city mouse and country mouse story that Reze spoke about?

Mina E.D

I wish I had a shark fiend to love me. I'll be VERY shocked if Denji gives kissing another chance after this.

Username123

Barf kiss or getting your tongue bit off kiss which would u rather get😂

Mina E.D

Both are absolute hell LMAOO. I'll have to take barf. I'll just chug ginger ale for the next 30 business years.

Username123

Power really couldn’t be in this movie because she’s Denjis partner so she would essentially be third wheeling him and reze the whole movie😂. Meanwhile beam could stay hidden and give them time to themselves.

What a movie! This might be a bit of a longer tangent but I gotta elaborate on what might be my favorite scene in the movie: Nomo (=red haired „hot“ guy, lol) confronting Reze. I love how Nomo handled the situation when Reze showed up because it‘s one of those rare moments where a side character in anime isn‘t just weak, mindless fodder but is actually able to strategize and think for themself. What he did, step by step: 1.Reze approaches and he immediately stops Aki and decides to confront her himself. He later tells Aki to take the other two and get out of there 2. Loudly shouts at Reze that this is a training facility and that she should not come any closer (thereby clearing any potential misunderstanding from the start AND!, more importantly, alerting everybody around that something‘s going on. You can see it drawing everyone‘s attention) 3. “She sure is smiling a lot for someone under attack“ (clearly sarcastic and not buying it) 4.When Denji says Reze‘s name, Nomo is THE ONLY ONE who recognizes it, and he does so immediately. He asks Aki if he‘s seen her before. He then says „It can’t be true, there‘s no way“. What he is debating here is not whether she is telling the truth or not. He‘s well aware that she‘s an enemy, not to mention that Beam announced her as the bomb devil a minute ago. He is just finding it hard to believe that that is THE Reze, one of the soviet kids, a.k.a. „Guinea Pigs“. 5.He tells the closest person to alert the vice captain and headquarters (proper assessment of her threat level, this also bought the main cast enough time later on) 6.Immediately gets the two oldest (and therefore probably his best) guys to attack her 7.When she blows her head off, everyone else thinks she‘s dead, but he thinks one step further and asks if they can make mold grow on her brain (honestly if they had done as he said here the movie might have ended right then lol) 8.Keeps calm after the first explosion, communicates Reze‘s location to the others and tells them not to let her get to Aki 9.Somehow survives her body blowing up on top of him 10.Loses an arm, still goes after her anyway (goated) It’s a shame he ended up dying but Reze is just that overpowered. And I feel like when side characters are shown to have actual value to them (aswell as individual designs) it makes these kinds of upscales all the more believable and their deaths more impactful. Basically, this show is really cool.

This movie was very successful at the box office. I’ve heard some reports saying it made close to 180 million total worldwide, and I know at least in the opening weekend in the u.s it did around 18 million. I can speak for myself that when I went to see the movie in the theater it was essentially 90 percent full. And it was also solely funded by mappa so they are going to keep most of the profit. And I really hope they pour that money into the next arc of csm which is currently in production right now. Most people are speculating that it will come out around a year from now, but there is no definitive date yet.

Ian

Two of my favorite little details is that Reze never calls Denji Chainsaw once throughout the movie and she always laughed at his jokes even after the betrayel, she really did love him

Alex

If you're curious, the movie Makima cried to (and Denji a little) was The Ballad of a Soldier, not that I've seen it. This was a fun watch-along.

Don Ratto

love this film, the line at the end about how she never went to school murders my heart everytime. kinda sad for the lack of ED on this one as i remember how much it the song hit me emotionally in the theatres, would recommend (especially with subtitles)

Seryu Ubiquitous

what an incredible movie. even the version with the total messed up subtitles. (stupid seryu, coudnt wait for the reupload xD). the music and the colors, absolutly stunning. just sad about the ending. they both deserved a happy end but this universe just doesnt allowed a piece of happines. :(

makima

The best is yet to come! Season 2 was already announced! Chainsaw man is definitely my favorite manga of all time alongside Frieren and One Piece. Also all of Fujimoto sensei works I have read they are all wonderful.

Vivasvan Gautam

Absolutely loved your post-reaction analysis, Dr Sophie. I have read the manga, so I know what happens next, but seeing you try to grasp anything Fujimoto is giving us about Makima and then making predictions based on it is so fun to watch. I also hope someday you will also react to 'look back'. It is a one-shot manga by Fujimoto, with a movie adaptation. And maybe Fire Punch manga. Will need to join the Titan tier, I guess, for this. He has many really interesting works out there that could benefit from your analysis.

Szaleos

The fact that she never once called him Chainsaw Man😭

• merry

Amazing react-analysis as always <3 Not sure if you really saw it that way, but i don’t think reze choking the man to death was meant to come across as creepy or make her seem like a cold killer. That vacant stare and then the singing was most likely to show her attempting to disassociate from committing such a slow murder. I think it’s pretty haunting given the rest of her context, and to me it shows that she doesn’t want to kill, especially not when nobody’s watching. She was just done enjoying herself in the pool, allowing herself to be a kid, and was forced back into the violent truth of the mission on somebody else’s terms, before she was ready.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I think based on us not knowing anything about her background it does come across as eerie but reflecting back when we learn more about her background - there's definitely more to it. So much happens that I can't remember to analyse each point or reflect back because I'm just tired after sitting for 2 hours straight :') but I tried my best haha!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yeah another commentor also mentioned this :) I don't know enough about types of butterflies to have offered any further context but I imagine a lot of people have read up on symbolism and such after they've watched it haha!

Peach

It was really fun seeing your reaction to everything! Beam is just such an instant favorite, haha Some of the bits that really get me... -Reze's teasing relationship with the cafe owner, even though she trained to be charming, it was clear he cared about her & the quiet working life was good for her, even if it was just killing time or a front for her mission -When Reze goes off to be alone & ends up having to kill that guy, it feels like she's truly wavering in her mission because she's having such a good time with Denji, and it's just a brutal snap back to her reality -When she asks him to run away with her after the festival, IMO she's truly toying with the idea there, and only decides to go through with attacking Denji after realizing he has feelings for someone else -In the middle of their fight when the others mention Makima, and Reze says then it would have been useless even if they did run away together - at first it sounds like it's about Denji's feelings for Makima, but after the end it becomes clear that Reze either had some past with Makima or otherwise knew just how inescapably dangerous she was -The flowers for the donations for victimized children - Reze getting one for herself almost as if it symbolizes both the feeling she got from Denji's flower, and a gesture of care towards her own lost childhood... Denji's positive personality despite everything he's been through probably really affected her Other than the scenes with Power and Aki yeah, it's truly one of the few times Denji just got to be normal and happy, and poor Reze had even less 😭 Aki & Angel was so moving too, and Aki's poor friend 😭

DrSophieDarlingReacts

It really is just tragic all round :( The 'what could have been' only for it to end in tragedy but I had a feeling that was going to be the case!

Derek Braley

This may just be a personal interpretation, but I think that my favorite part about the pool scene being, as you noted, the one chance for them to be themselves and experience the happy life that they could've had, is the fact that it's the first scene that we see that's two people fully nude. Despite the way that sexuality has been used as a theme and manipulation tactic throughout the first season, here is Denji, presented with a girl in the nude (and him in the nude himself) and the context becomes wholly innocent rather than sexual. Rather than sex or sexual intimacy, the first instance where he achieves what would've been a "goal" of his is actually marked by emotional intimacy, a chance to just be himself, a chance to learn how to swim (when most other kids would have learned it ages ago) - a chance to just be a kid, and see and experience a slice of that life that could've been. Even afterwards, when Reze's being chased and he's internally deliberating between Makima and Reze, he pictures Reze in lingerie despite having already seen her naked; what normally would have been a "perverse" moment for Denji turns into something pure where he ultimately sees past the fact that she was nude and views/experiences the moment for what it truly is. I adore this movie and feel like I could go on and on about the pool scene forever. Such a tragic relationship, they both deserved better but Fujimoto had other ideas; I'm anime-only, but after seeing this movie and Look Back (another Fujimoto work, definitely recommend) I'm quite scared for how the rest of this series is going to hurt me!

Tay

Denji and Reze make me so unbelievably sad every time I think about them my heart hurts. In a perfect world (and one without makima 😑) they should’ve been happy together (and just be able to live normal lives). but I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels maternal over Denji (despite me only being a few years older LMAO but I’m an older sister to a younger brother so) but I absolutely HATE the mischaracterization of his character that seems to be very common… his character is in fact that serious to me. And he holds a special place in my heart as one of my favorite mcs in anime so.. anywayssss loved the reaction!! 🥹🫶

hisoka

Its actually a movie reference to "no country for old men" theres so many more movie references in this one!

Jech

American schools have pools too, well many high schools do if they support a competitive swim team. But anywho, gosh the music during that scene was so lovelyyyyyyy wasn't it? The piano is still playing in my mind bringing tears to my eyes.

Tu bluffes Martoni

If you think about it, there was absolutely no reason for reze to befriend denji and pass time with him. She could have killed him easily multiple times. If you look at their first scene together, she's holding the pin that transforms her, she was ready to kill him. But she wasn't ready to face a teenage boy her age, who got so many similar experiences. Then, the pool scene. As you saw, she really can't use well ber power while wet. Yet, she got naked, in a pool, under the rain with him at her most vulnerable state. She was sincere asking him to run away with her. When rewatching, that's when you notice that she was indeed in love with him, but had no idea herself how to deal with her feelings. I teared up way too much watching this movie, even more after understanding it better

Brunch

im suprised that alot of people dont pick up on the way she walks during her walking scenes to the cafe shop. She walks like she is marching, which is supposed to indicate her military background habits whenever she is not being seen/ acting infront of others.

Krul

Some people mentioned before that the movie didn't make them cry so it was not that emotional, but I feel like the movie describes a different kind of sadness. It is not an explosive feeling that makes you cry, but rather a sustained melancholy for Denji and Reze and all the possible "what if"s. Reze really seems like the female counterpart of Denji, having her childhood taken away from her, never going to school, all of these things she was telling him that he has normalized, but that she had had the time to realize how fucked up they are. I hadn't watched "Chainsaw Man" before because the clips I kept finding in YouTube didn't seem very interesting. But now that I have watched it all, it is clear that it is quite an interesting story and the way it is told is very unique. Fujimoto really seems to have a deep understanding of human nature and the way it is shown to us has been quite enlightening. Thank you again for an amazing reaction and analysis, can't wait to watch season 2 with you!

Dem

The story's ability to make you want the absolute best for Denji always impresses me when I rewatch/reread Chainsaw Man. Huge props to Fujimoto for writing something so powerful. I love that we get so see Denji make big progress towards becoming an actual human being in this film. Him telling Reze at the festival that he actually has people around him whom he cares about as well as a job and a goal to work towards, you know, some actual structure to his life now is always so heart-warming. As well as when he makes the decision to run away with Reze, it's nice to see Denji make decisions independent of what other people want from him. But at the same time there's still a lot of work to be done. The scene of Denji and Reze at the festival always fills me with a profound sadness when I watch it, particularly the scene of the two running through the crowd at the end. Denji's vacant stare as he's quite literally led by the hand, seeing his utter lack of autonomy is never fun to watch lol. Even though this relationship never came to be, it's for sure a huge turning point for Denji.

Cisco

We all thought it was Reze luring Denji into her web, but really it was Makima using Denji to lure in Reze for the kill 💔

Chris Walker

Well that's even better then!

1110

I think the most tragic thing about the ending of this movie is one, as you said, Denji being left with the impression that Reze never truly cared for him and that their relationship was built only on lies, not knowing that she was intercepted by Makima when heading to the café, but second, Reze's own perception of what happened. From her perspective, because her last conversation with Denji is him asking her to meet at the café under the possibility of running away together, her being ambushed my Makima and Angel makes it look like Denji planned this on purpose, luring her in under false pretenses so she doesn't leave Japan and having Makima deal with her. In her last moments, she regrets the fact that she didn't kill him when they first met and that she got so attached to him, and laments the fact that she actually considered the idea of leading a normal life with him. They basically both feel betrayed by the other, not knowing both of their feelings were genuine and Makima prevented them from realizing what they both wanted. Loved your reaction to the series. The next part of the anime is going to be out (relatively) soon so I'm excited to see you react to it when it eventually comes! :)

baileygobrr

seeing this in cinema on one of those IMAX screens was genuinely insane
