Hey guys! So I don't know if you have seen, but YouTube are changing their policies AGAIN and introducing FORCED pre and post video adverts which YOU CANNOT TURN OFF as a creator.

This means that to stop loud and annoying adverts waking you up from your peaceful ASMR induced slumber, you will need to sign up for YouTube Premium, which, at this moment in time is about £12 a month - which is f*king extortionate if you ask me. (I also bet YouTube will hike the prices up next quarter too....)

It's only a matter of time before YouTube will force mandatory mid-roll ad's which will be EVEN WORSE for everyone.

The problem is - as creators - if we turn off ad's altogether, not only will we not make any revenue to make videos, we won't be pushed by YouTube's algorithm either, and thus will essentially sign our own death warrant on our channel.

So, I have been racking my brains since the announcement for ways around this which benefit everyone. And I think I have a solution.

Bare with me here...

Currently the VIP tier has access to 24hr previews and ad-free content.

My plan is to give the £1 tier add free content - a much more affordable price than YouTube's Premium shite.

I will also post the videos in my shop for £1 so people can start their own curated collection if they didn't want to sign up for the monthly subscription, or didn't like some of the videos I post on YouTube.

Now don't worry, VIP tier will still be able to watch content a day before anyone else! (all the other perks stay the same)

I will be announcing this officially next week on Youtube, but I wanted to get your feedback first before I did it.

Do you think it's a good idea?

Ya I think it's a great idea. You will need to let people know who currently don't. It'll be a rude awakening for sure.

I think this is brilliant! I do wish the Patreon app was a little better with viewing/queuing content, but until then, this solution works! and this is coming from a longtime youtube premium member who still thinks this change stinks!

I think it's a fantastic idea. I'm not sure how collections work on Patreon, but I anticipate that video navigation will be the chief frustration with this platform. I think I recall that the hashtags for the video content wasn't always consistent, but that may be one possible way to make navigation easier.

It seems like a great idea, seeing how much youtube has changed I haven't been a fan. I'm sure that's how the prices will go as well. I remember premium used to be 9.99 but is now 12.99 which is ridiculous 🙄

I don't know what to think yet. YouTube is really screwing ASMR channels over with this though. Wish there was a better solution. It's really too bad ASMR videos aren't louder, forcing people to turn down the volume so ads are the same volume.

The Feral Philosopher

Your hearts in the right place in this so I think you should pursue this idea.

I actually pay for Youtube Music, which includes YT premium. Seeing as millions of people spend ~$10/mo on Spotify, I don't actually think the price is bad at all. This doesn't mean I'm trying to be a YT apologist. But for those that don't find the price worth it, Charlette, I think your idea is brilliant. I would just hope that it won't cannibalize your revenue with people moving from higher tiers to lower - perhaps you'd get a ton more sign ups though?

Bob

This is a good middle ground for people who want ad free ASMR, but don't want/need youtube premium

I feel like in the last month, every service I’m subscribed to has raised their prices, forcing me to start cutting them out. YouTube is so shit with their restrictive policies, mandatory changes, and horrible algorithm. They know they can do it too because no one else can compete. I think it’s a great idea for those who want a peaceful sleep, but don’t want to fork $15 or more to a greedy corporation every month to do so

Lee Wilson

Charlette, this is a fantastic idea. I think you’re onto a winner here. Hopefully, other ASMR channels will consider doing the same- I’d rather throw the ASMR community a few quid a month than those greedy f@!kers at YouTube.

Mark

Definitely agree it's a great idea. I'd love to be able to "build my own asmr bundle" by giving creators a small amount each for ad-free content rather than pay youtube.

David M

Sounds like a good plan to me. And appreciate you are so thoughtful and caring about your audience. ❤️

Valando

Sounds like the right move to me. I also feel like the ASMR creator community should band together and lobby against this change, but that's easier said than done

Josh

Out-competing YouTube. I like it.

I eventually grew tired of all the annoying f**king ads and finally got the Premium Lite to get rid of them about two years ago now. Don't remember how or where I found the Premium Lite though... 🤔 I also don't know about the price for it in dollars or pounds, but for me as a swede it differs 50 swedish kronor between the two (I pay 69 SEK per month for Premium Lite whilst Premium is 119 SEK per month). Perhaps looking up the Premium Lite could be an option? EDIT: I found this two year old article -> https://www.theverge.com/2021/8/2/22605455/youtube-premium-lite-pilot-benelux-nordics-experiment-ad-free-subscription and it seems like there is a long testing period for the Premium Lite for us in Scandinavia and some select European countries... I mean, since it doesn't seem to be available to the rest of the world yet?

I'll never pay a dollar to YouTube, especially not now that they are trying to force me to. Would rather put up with the ads. I think it's a great idea to start shifting more and more content here; even if you lose views on YT for it, they're going to go down anyways as people turn away from that awful site.

B.R.

I doubt YT would care or listen. I suspect they are trying to ditch monetisation entirely. Everyone is trying to recreate cable television- pay to watch a service filled with ads.

I’m going to assume that YouTube is going to lose a metric ton of creators over this crap. One more tech platform pushing to see who can be the greediest SOB out there. I think you’re putting forward good alternatives on patreon.

Doug Bruch

I think you are very business savvy and really know how to take care of your fans. sounds like the perfect work around 👍🏻👍🏻

Dylan Guthrie

I wish there was a video platform just for ASMRist

SevenStars

Yes please, this would be helpful to everyone, there are petitions on Change.org we can sign as well

Grayson Lang

Curious if you’ve looked into Nebula?

Lars Mehlhorn

That's a wonderful idea!!! 🙃🙌🥰

I have YT premium for reasons. I don't like what I'm hearing you deal with. Hopefully you're getting revenue from me as you should be. Do the pound thing. Do it for a penny if Patreon will let you. I'm here to help you keep making content as long as you enjoy making it.

Émilie Savard

That's a great idea! I relunctantly subscribed to YT Premium (I was offered a student price), but I'd be more than willing to pay creators directly for their work.
