Prowlwood Village [40x40] [4K] [jpg/webp] (Patreon)
Content
After days of travel on poorly kept "roads" you finally lay eyes on the grim, green edge of the Prowlwood. Your contact is supposedly in a remote village, located less than a day from this border. Seven hours later, you reach the hamlet mostly unscathed. Immediately, you notice something strange: the silence. The still, unnerving, eerie silence. What happened here? A large beast? Bandits fleeing from the war perhaps? Could some illness have found its way this far from civilization? You will hopefully find the answer in what remains of Prowlwood Village…including your contact, if they’re still alive.

Scenario Hook : Bandits Brigade (Ransacked variation)
After a terrible loss in a nearby battle, a captain of the royal army and the survivors of his brigade fled the battlefield and chose the life of banditry. The Broken Crowns, as they are now known by the locals, settled in an inconspicuous village hidden in the woods. They plundered its meager riches, looted the granary and killed the population to prevent anyone from revealing their secret hideout to the authorities. Vegetable patches, an orchard, a few sheep, a forge and a carpenter's workshop: they had everything to survive there, away from prying eyes. However, with time, the band grew restless and started raiding nearby villages.
The party was tasked to find the Broken Crowns hideout and put an end to their little adventure. Be wary though, as this is no ragtag and confused horde they will be facing -- they are a well-oiled, hierarchized, professionally trained machine of war.
The captain chose to settle in the healer's house, on top of the hill northeast of the village. It has a good view of the settlement and three exits, allowing for a swift escape. The rest of the brigade occupies the other houses, positioned to spring into ambush once an intruder is far enough into the village to allow for encirclement. Some might try to lure strangers further in, while the others initiate a pincer maneuver to prevent escape.
Scenario Hook : Nature's Wrath (Vines variation)
When the settlers first came to these woods, they cut the trees and tilled the land, they picked plants and slaughtered animals. All these actions stirred a great anguish inside the forest. In the beginning, the wood waited and observed. However, the village grew and new houses were built. New trees were cut. More and more hunters prowled the woods day and night..and the forest wept. Its deep sadness turned to anger against the villagers. Of this ire, a leshen was born -- a terrible fey spirit and defender of the wood. Its maddened rage descended upon the village like the fell swoop of the woodcutter's axe against the oak.
Now, the village is silent, its last occupants petrified where they stood. Their faces contorted in expressions of sheer terror, covered in lively vines, with roses and cornflowers budding from their long dead flesh.
The party was tasked to investigate the remote village and discover why communications with it fell silent. The leshen, barely distinguishable from an ordinary plant in its dormant state, is hidden somewhere amidst the chaos, ready to attack if its natural sanctuary is troubled once again. Picking a flower, cutting a vine, killing an animal in this area would immediately prompt it to attack by using its vineglide ability, approaching the group discretely through the surrounding vines and attacking by surprise.
