Lost in the Thaumaturgic Chambers for hours – was it hours? was it days? – you finally lost your way. You now wander the infinite hallways, ever shifting under your gaze, endlessly morphing to show you places you have been and places you will be, locations both real and imaginary. You walk through acres of dark forests, swim through oceans of impossibly placid waters and cross the emptiness of space itself. In every corner some ferocious beast, sealed away and forgotten by the archmage, waits to pounce, crazed and famished. You battle. Over and over again. Never ending. Like the dimensional shuffle you’re in.

Environments matter: Each environment brings unique challenges to the fight. While the bitter cold of the mountains may force non-arctic combattants to gain exhaustion levels as battle goes on, the scorching sun of the desert could make movement slower, just like the sunken ruins may prove difficult to navigate for creature unable to breathe underwater. The spore clouds of the mushroom caverns could poison foes. The giant arcane crystals of the Underdark might impede low level spells as well. The numerous bushes and dense foliage in the forest zone are ideal for rogues and rangers looking for hiding spots. Feel free to get creative, and make each arena its own challenge!

Additional threats: On top of whatever the players are facing in their own, private hell, additional threats can make their task harder. The library and dungeon can easily be trapped. In the alchemy laboratory, strange aberrations could break their containment tubes and join the battle alongside one of the parties, or attack at random in blind rage. In the Lava arena, imps or mephits could form inside the lava each turn. In the gaols, crazed prisoners or undead creatures could break free from their cells as the fight goes on.
