Perfect timing guys! Can't wait to cry with you at this film again x

Sam S

I loved this film when I first watched it! I’m fully prepared for tears again. *Passes the tissue box around*

Clash

Thank you so much for doing this film, I can’t wait to see your reactions. I will get the tissues ready

Sara Ell

I just rewatched this movie two days ago and I’m really excited to see your reaction (I did a silent scream when I saw the notif 🤭). I remember watching the trailer after finishing red white and royal blue and getting a strong sense of deja vu… so I checked a list I keep of movies I’ve watched and realised that I had actually seen the movie about 5-6 years ago and I just had to go and rewatch it after realising nick is in it + a vague memory of having enjoyed the movie (and I’m so glad I did because it’s a great movie)

Alanna Smith

i dont actually think nick has ever actually said he was queer or straight but the interent assumes he is since no one seen him in a relationship but based it one movie roll high string where he is straight in that role even tho he has played muliple lqbt characters

Mike

Fionn O'Shea (Ned) is also in the gay-themed movie called Dating Amber, a delightful movie. Nicholas Galitzine (Conor) besides being in RWRB and Handsome Devil is also in the new queer movie Bottoms which has huge buzz. Both of them are wonderful actors.

Hannah Howden

So much content coming we are so here for it!!!

Matthew Binczek

You guys missed the narration in the beginning talking about how Ned takes lyrics from songs and passes them off as his own and the old English teacher didn’t know and he always got an A. When Ned tries that with the new teacher Mr. Sherry, he recognizes the song lyrics and plays the song while Ned reads in front of the class.

Dennis Verner

Watched this film several years ago. Loved it. Loved this.

Joanna

I saw this movie a long time ago but to me Ned was getting bullied for being gay but wasn't actually gay and Connor was gay and in the closet

Hannah Gibson

You missed the line with the old English teacher, where he was getting As because his essays were just song lyrics. But Mr Sherry recognised the song

Crystal Pritchard

I haven’t started the reaction yet, but the line “I never knew I was lonely until I had a friend” always makes me cry.

Dennis Verner

Thank you Matthew! I was going to jump in and you did it better.

Stian Kristoffersen

Thanks! Rewatched this beautiful movie last week. Love it and I'm so happy you do too!

Ryan Kelly

I watched this myself for the first time a couple of weeks back, I can't believe i never got around to watching it before, it was great.

Richard Collette

Good movie and fun reaction with your guys there another movie called "Date and Switch This movie is a blast. Has anyone seen or heard of this movie.

Sara Nissen

Don't remember ever watching this film, so this was the first time. Yes it gave me Dead Poet Society vibes(which I really didn't mind, since Dead Poet Society is one of my alltime favorite movies, and one of the movies that almost always brings tears to my eyes. But I understand if you were maybe a bit tired of the inspirational teacher trope, since it's been done a lot.) And nice to see Andrew Scott, he is a really good actor(I first saw him in Pride, another one of my alltime favorite movies.) Great choice people, I really enjoyed this. Yes I was with you all the way on hating Pascal/the rugby coach, what an awful human, passing on or trying to pass on his awfull views to those impresionable young men. The scene in the locker room reminded me of the final scene in Dead Poet Society, where they stand up on the tables for Mr. Keating defying the teacher/headmaster, here they just walked to Connors side, and Pascal could scream as much as he wanted, but all in vain. I love your descussions and pretty much agreed with it all; yes Connor might have had internalised homophobia in a way, at least he felt pressured to be awful to Ned, and then Ned outed him I think, because he felt betrayed by his(so called) friend, and wanted to punish him/move the focus away from himself or at least have someone to share the focus with, but he realised what he did was wrong, really wrong. But I'm glad in the end Mr. Sherry had the courage to come out as well. Aww Alex, I didn't cry myself at the end, but I can perfectly understand, why you did. I just had a smile on my face, because it ended so well, as I thought at one point it might not(and at that point I was a bit teary eyed).

Matthew Binczek

“A handsome devil is charming and good-looking, but with connotations of danger and mischief. The idea is that his good looks are a warning sign. However, it's usually used playfully or flirtatiously.”

el ★

maybe the real handsome devil was the friends we made along the way

Crystal Pritchard

Fionn O’Shea is such an incredible actor, he gets like 10 steps off the stage after outing Connor and you can just see the regret painted across his face. I love how the movie doesn’t justify or glorify what he did, but he’s still a sympathetic character. We as the audience can understand what drove him to that point, but still disagree with the choice.

Elspeth Clarke

Ah, why do I have to go to work in 30 minutes??? Well, I know exactly what I'm doing when I get home!!! Can't wait to watch your reactions to this movie

Date and Switch is a fun light-hearted comedy with something good to say underneath. I would recommend it as well.

Jennifer Fell

Oooh I've never seen this film... excited to watch with you two later!

Lonely_viking

This is one of my favourite queer movies, so happy you guys watched it!

Tina Stellato

You guys are amazing!!! Thank you for sharing this beautiful movie. OMG not sure if you noticed, the end screen was blue and yellow (the same colours for Nick 💙& Charlie💛)

JASON ALEXANDER

I saw this film some years ago and it was really well done! I loved how each character was developed which really helped make this movie so meaningful. I really hope you guys take a look at the series ELITE on netflex! It is absolutely fantastic.

Lost Boy

I love this movie

Dennis Verner

I think this film is so emotional because the boys got justice. Thousands of years of British and (hopefully) American history tell us that justice is attainable. Real justice happens so rarely in life that when we see it depicted like this it just opens and emotional flood gate and we say, yes, that's how it's supposed to be.

Kim Engel

1:02:00 “You made me do it by myself” this line hits different every time I rewatch the movie

Rosie Dickinson
>>116859051

Yea I noticed that Ned never stated anything about his sexuality at all. Everyone else did and he commented on that but he never 'came out'. It is an interesting choice

Brett M
>>116879230

Wow Kim, I had never thought about that meaning til now. So good.

Peter Edwards

Fionn O'Shea is in another fantastic LGBT+ movie, Dating Amber, and it has some dark moments but is funny. Would love to see your reactions to that, and would be interested to see if you think it's as good, or better, than Handsome Devil.

Jennifer Fell

Aww. This was such a WONDERFUL and very layered film. I loved it and I loved your reaction. Alex you feel things so deeply and its wonderful to be a part of and witness. And Josh you always see a lot of depth and discourse... Loved watching this "with" you both. ❤️

Professor Wonkadoodle

To explain the plagiarism thing, the song that Andrew Scott started playing in class was the lyrics of the poem that the main character turned in as his essay. He’d plagiarized them from that song.

Nina

Yes! That movie was fantastic.

Daylet

I am so glad y’all watched this and I got to rewatch it with you! I hadn’t seen it since it came out and totally forgot Nicholas was in it. Such a great film! I also want to validate what Alex said about the headmaster. The audacity for him to lay the responsibility for the well-being of another student on his shoulders is ridiculous. Ned shouldn’t’ve done what he did, we can agree with that, but the headmaster knew who his coach was and what kind of shit he taught his players and he did nothing about it. What Ned did, like Alex pointed out, a system of a problem the headmaster has long turned a blind eye to. Josh, I will never not love how you focus on the most innocuous of details (i.e train schedule, 6 IN THE MORNING!) lol. It brings me so much joy cause I also tend to dwell on small details that may make a story less realistic haha Keep up the great work guys!

Angela o grady

The director makes some good points in this article. Handsome Devil is the first "gay" movie I watched and has remained one of my favourites. Being Irish it resonates strongly with me, it really captures the crazy obsession with sports..(.even the coach slapping the boy would only be seen as passion for the game and if you tried to report it you'd only be told to toughen up ) the drinking culture is spot on, the pressure to "hold your liquor " is enormous.

Carrie Lindley

Just chiming in to say I love the way you work together on these videos. You're so entertaining together, especially with your banter. But also, Josh, you're great at framing Alex's reactions and showcasing his commentary (for example, when you asked him "what was your trigger point"). And Alex, you deliver those raw emotional responses while also articulating the reasons behind them. You guys are just a dream team! Thanks for all you do!

Henrik Schröder
>>116859051

That's also my take on the movie. Ned actually isn't gay, everyone else just assumes he is, because he is different from the other rugby lads. And the best part is that it doesn't matter if he is or isn't, there's clearly no romance between Ned and Connor, they're actually just friends!

Henrik Schröder
>>116859051

Arguments for Ned not being gay is that he had no idea the bar was a gay bar, and that he outed Connor without remorse. Arguments against is that I think the director said in an interview that Ned is gay, so there's that...

Emily Parrish

It’s been awhile since I’ve watched this movie again, and I really appreciate your conversation about it. I’m a bisexual English teacher in the U.S. and the stuff with Mr. Sherry just hit different this time around. While I’m out to my friends and family (and some colleagues), I’m not really out to my students. And it is absolutely this back and forth dilemma for me like you guys discussed about wanting to be this role model for queer students and be my full self, but also having to consider keeping myself protected. Although I live in a pretty safe state, the rhetoric nationally is fairly abysmal; any queer adult working with kids knows the fear of one persistent parent calling you a groomer and escalating it all the way to the school board. It’s not just the parents either. In the last five years there’s definitely been an uptick in homophobia from students too. All that’s to say, I saw a lot of myself in Mr. Sherry this rewatch and I’ve got a lot of feelings about it! Appreciated watching you two process some of those emotions as well.

Sam ! !

I loved your guys’ reaction to this movie! This movie was my first introduction to Nicholas Galitzine and it’s one of my personal favourite LGBTQ movies and I love how you guys felt about the movie and your takes on it.

Joanna
>>116859051

Ned not being gay was my impression after seeing the movie the first time but if the director said he was that's fine too, I like the idea that he's gay but there's no romantic feels between him and Connor, they can be friends and that's ok

Chris Mackenzie

I've watched this movie several times, but watching your reaction has helped show me a new appreciation for it. Alex and Josh, your raw emotion helped me find new meanings in these Movies and TV shows I have seen before but not necessarily fully understood. I see parallels between these representations and my own coming out and knowing myself and I am so appreciative to see this. Thank you!

jmo

You should react to Get Real

gunclevanya

The beauty of Rufus Wainwright's "Go or Go Ahead" underneath the climax of the rugby match cannot be overstated.

Hannah Gibson

Also, Irish rail, Josh, not British Rail!!

Professor Wonkadoodle

The headmaster's talk at 1:31:10 has always been so powerful - talking about empathy - but also so infuriating. Like, what about his empathy as he watched the school he is in charge of devolve into this trashfire? What about this bullying and bigotry happening regularly on his watch? What about that?

Jennifer Fell
>>116901798

I've posted it on the discord... RW is so wonderful. "Going to a town" is one of my favourite songs ever.

Mathew Aquino
>>116904414

That’s an excellent point, and when the guys made two. Like it’s great, that the headmaster isn’t personally prejudiced . He hasn’t changed a thing. Ned and I’m sure many other people are being bully horribly and he’s just letting it happen blissfully. Possibly patting himself on the back that he has a gay student and possible Queer student and he put them together for their safety . ( the Director has never 100% verified Ned’s sexuality. He prefers to leave it up to the audience then approach I don’t entirely understand.) the fact of the matter is, I could actually imagine the headmaster being queer himself and still propagating still negative policies. I read a book a long time ago, called another mother tongue , about linguistics and the queer legacy throughout history. The author tells a story about a time when she was a scientist and her and three other people were in a room where one of them totally very nasty, gay joke . Because this was the 60s and she was deeply in the closet. The author laughed, and so did everyone else, and she looked around and realized. Other than the person who told that joke, everybody else laughing at the joke, was queer them selves . And she said that was when she realized that the closet was a prison made of mirrors. Thank you so much for your comment!

Elspeth Clarke

I loved watching this!!! I love this movie so much, it takes such a fantastic approach to being queer, trying to fit in and be confident in who you are - I love the scene between Conor and Mr Sherry, it's so powerful and shows how hard it can be no matter what stage of life you're in. I also love the different stages of Ned and Conor's friendship, both actors do such a brilliant job in their roles, taking you through those first stages of mistrust and trying to reach out, learning about each other and finding common ground, the closeness and how easy it can be for external (and internal) pressures to tear something apart no matter how much you want to keep it safe. I also love how Ned is there for Conor at the end in the locker room scene, just standing by his side and showing his solidarity and providing support but letting Conor own the moment and speak his truth because it's about them and their team, but it's also just about Conor and what that moment means for him - for a character who talks a lot throughout the film (and narrates it) I love that in that moment, he's quiet and willingly takes a back seat to let Conor find his voice. In terms of the Handsome Devil, I've always assumed/taken it to be Conor - that's the title of the essay Ned is writing, which is all about Conor and their friendship, so I assumed it was a reference to him.

Elspeth Clarke
>>116904414

Yes!!! I so agree with what Alex said as well, like it's lovely on one hand that he thought about Conor's adjustment to the school and what it might be like for him, and how he thought Ned could relate and be a supportive person for him but then also... Where do you get off telling Ned you're disappointed in his behaviour? From a man who LITERALLY walks by a student stuffed in a rubbish bin and BLAMES THAT STUDENT? Where are you calling out the toxic masculinity being propagated by your precious rugby coach? The torment the older students are putting the younger ones through? Because ignoring all those things created a perfect storm where the coach was able to very easily manipulate one student into blackmailing another to drop his friend, abandoned his other commitments and become so terrified of being outed that he takes his aggression out on his friend physically... and then leads Ned to reaching a point where, even if only for a split second, outing his best friend seems like the answer. And then have the gall to tell Ned you're disappointed in him? Also - your rugby coach is literally assaulting the students.

Elspeth Clarke
>>116888090

He explains not long before that that it's his own private joke that all his English essays are just lyrics to obscure songs that his previous English teacher (the one they announce has died) would never know and therefore he always gives him great marks... so before Mr Sherry, no one at the school had really bothered to pay attention to him except to bully him and so no one, not even a teacher, noticed if he was using his own voice

Diane Furlong

Okay here we go Guys! I just noticed that Josh is wearing his dark Pride bunny shirt and I’m wearing my white one today. 😁

Crystal Pritchard

With respect to your conversation at the beginning of the video about whether Nicholas or Taylor are actually part of the LGBTQ+ community, I’d love a video with your thoughts about “straight” actors playing non-straight characters. I personally don’t think representation matters as much in front of the camera, if the actors are convincing, respectful and professional then I’m not bothered by their personal lives. Where I think representation is most important is behind the camera, with writers and directors. Take RWRB as an example, the love scene in Paris was so well done because the director is a gay man so he knew how to craft the scene to make it realistic and representative. I also think there’s a danger of outing people if we start getting angry at straight actors playing non-straight characters. Sometimes the actors haven’t yet come out, like Kit Connor, and sometimes the actors themselves aren’t aware they aren’t straight, like Rebel Wilson. But I’d love your thoughts, maybe in a video. And anyone else’s thoughts in the comments.

Sara Nissen
>>116912613

I agree, if the actor is respectful, convincing and professional I too don't mind if the person acting for example isn't gay.

Laura Ibarra

I’ve never heard of this movie and it was beautiful! I’m going to definitely go back and watch it on my own. Also, I would totally but a Some Boys Don’t Play Rugby shirt 🏉🚫 haha ASWT MERCH!!!!!

Claudine Newman
>>116857394

Nicholas did an interview with Variety last month and he said he was straight in that. He was talking about his sexuality in relationship to playing a gay character. Taylor, on the other hand, has never spoken about his sexuality and anything said about him is purely speculation and assumptions.

Claudine Newman

Just getting around to watching your reaction to this. I’ve seen it twice and really like Fionn O’Shea a lot. And Andrew Scott was good in this too. Such great actors. And btw, yes Nicholas said he was straight in an interview last month but Taylor had never spoken about his sexuality. Anything said about him is purely speculation or assumption.

i just wanted to say how much i admire teachers in the US who are able to continue teaching despite all the news we hear about school boards elections, the hatefulness and labelling teachers as "groomers" or "woke" is just insanity. the craziness of school board elections and censoring reading materials to fit a narrow-minded ultra-conservative Christian agenda seems so bizarre. i completed a secondary (high school) teaching degree here in australia in IT and english and can't imagine what it would be like with all those added external pressures; as if there isn't enough already in teaching. i honestly can't say i blame you for erring on the side of caution when your personal safety and that of your students is at risk. also, the added problem of rampant gun ownership must be terrifying (from an outsiders perspective anyway), as those are issues most developed countries don't have to deal with. stay safe!

Diane Furlong

Oh Guys, Guys, Guys! Yea of course you’re Handsome Devils in the best possible way! Great movie! Josh, I agree, it very much had Dead Poets vibes. On an unrelated side note, Dead Poets was filmed almost entirely in my Home State of Delaware

Nui Tammakoon

I watched this film a couple years ago, and really love it. Also the film introduced Nicholas to me. First I thought he is just a handsome boy with pretty face, but it seems that he is and has more than that. Glad to see your reaction to this film. Laughed a lot when you mentioned ‘Good Morning’ , Josh!😄, and Alex I cried together with you. ❤️. Another film that I love so much is ‘Beautiful Thing’. You guys might have seen it already( if not pls consider reacting to😊) . Thanks a lot.😍😍😍

Katja Knox

I loved this movie ❤ I especially loved that they didn't force the characters together just because they were both queer - as you see in so many other movies - but concentrated on their friendship. It absolutely made my day. Such an emotional roller-coaster and thank goodness could share it with you lovely lot, would probably be a absolute mess otherwise.

Madge Stapleton

Handsome Devil is a Smiths's song. I'm an English teacher in an Irish boarding school and we've shown this film to a number of classes. Even the rugby players like it! Also, Irish Rail is much more reliable than British Rail - and cheaper!

Mr. CountRo

Just a thought. I think Ned isn't even gay. He's just bullied as being gay, because he's different. He just doesn't care, because his goal is to leave that school as quick as possible.

Mads
>>116912613

Kit feeling forced to come out as he did, will always be one of the sourest moments. I hated it for him even though he's claimed he's okay with being out now, he was very against labels originally. It just wasn't fair

Mads

You guys made great points I missed on my original watch of this, like catching early that the Rugby Coach was going to be a problem, I actually thought he was gonna be fine, until he became obviously an issue. I will say, a scene that broke my heart that didn't seem to affect you guys (LOL) was when Mr. Sherry, having just lost that conversation with Connor about being out and it getting better, returns the following day to his dorm, to see the room empty on both sides, completely cleaned out of "his team". Like he fumbled them both really, let them both down in different ways and they're just gone now, he's failed. Andrew Scott shows that sadness so well. I do believe it's the moment he decided he needs to be better FOR himself and them and stand by his own convictions. It's VERY Dead Poet's Society, a movie, I always thought was eluding to being gay without ever saying it.

Graham Turner

I was expecting the boat to be called ‘Handsome Devil’. Just me?

Mads

Also please if you EVER make t-shirts please make yourselves one that says "We do gay shit" I beg of you.

John Buettner

It also had the vibes for The History Boys, another great film!!!

HalfLighter

I’ve always found it interesting that the movie never explicitly confirms Ned’s sexuality. It seems deliberate, so I’ve always wondered why they made that choice.

Joseph Carriker

Honestly, the team winning at the end was wonderful, because it wasn't the coach's team anymore. In the locker room, the players stepped away from him and it became Connor's team - and the authentic Connor, with them knowing who he is. This movie is also a sharp look at how homophobia goes from peer-based (Ned and Connor's troubles) to institutional (Mr. Sherry's fear and obfuscation because of his job) as adults. So fantastic.

Ljaljui Galuljigulj

I cried too I also wondering who is handsome devil? But obviously that Nicholas is freaking handsome tho😍

DP

Has anyone recommended the film “Giant little ones “

Naava

This was fun, I have to say quite refreshing also that it was friendship-centered story rather than the usual romance thing. 👏👏👏

Luna
>>116985357

Aye, a Canadian production! I saw this at the TIFF, which incidentally starts today for this year :D It's a brilliant movie but also pisses me tf off lmaoo

Luna
>>116859051

I always thought the -paraphrasing here- "if YOU are playing for the team, then it becomes MY team too, OUR team" speech was the obvious confirmation that Ned was queer.

Luna
>>116857718

I was lucky enough to see an early screening of bottoms and oh man I amost burst my gut from laughing so much. The satire and social commentary is just... *Chefs kiss*

Michael Craig

Sorry, bailed at 17:37. Burn it all to the ground and salt the earth.

DP
>>116985357

I don’t think it’s a perfect film but I remember reading about it and my theater was showing it so I checked it out. Why does it piss you off ?

Luna
>>116985357

Oh I didn't mean it seriously. The character Dallas pisses me off. But he is meant to do that. He just succeeds a little too well at that with me that I wanna reach into the screen and sucker punch him 😂

Pip

Conor needs To transfer to Truham Grammar. The team need him. 🙂

roli
>>116859051

I've also heard that theory that Ned is actually not gay, but after watching this reaction I think he actually is. The team speech, but also just before he outs Connor he says "why does he get to be adored and me bullied when we are about the same". Of course he could mean that in the "different" sense, but he could also mean it in the gay sense.

Emmanuelle St-Jean

Please boys, if you want something dark and sexy for a change, look up Interview With The Vampire, season two is coming out soon. The characters are sexy, well developped, funny at time and it's all a bloody beautiful mess.

b

i love that you actually thought your patrons would be like, you know who's underrepresented? gay predators 🥰

Clash
>>116855421

So I said I would get the tissues ready, I balled my eyes out when watching it. Then watched this full reaction and cried even more.

Dan Tackett

I was reminded that I’d enjoyed this film years ago when I saw the filmography for Nicholas “Gal-at-zine” (sorry Alex, I can’t spell his name the way that you pronounced it!). But it was SO much better watching it again with you guys and seeing your range of reactions. Though my American ears always cringe when I hear British slang for a cigarette. “His mum always has a fag” seems ironic coming from a gay guy. In the spirit of RWRB, another enemies-to-lovers film worth watching (especially for one of the lead actors) is “The Thing About Harry.” It also has a gay writer/director to tell this story.

b

originally saw this while working my way through andrew scott's filmography after sherlock and pride - conor's dad saying 'i loved you *today*' is such a gut punch, like, i only love you when you aren't you. woof. this time i really liked that ned goes from half-assing his essays to revealing himself in the form of an essay.

Pamela Chandler Rash

I hope one day you'll react to Latter Days if you haven't already watched it. It's so good.

Chris Metzger

This was a good movie. I'd never heard of it before you posted it, so I watched along with you for the first time. A part of me was hoping for a romance to blossom, but in the end, I'm glad it didn't.

Dawn Johnson

Your reaction to Handsome Devil was so beautiful and insightful. (Galitzine is the HD, I believe). Did you know that Galitzine was going to be a rugby player before a rotator cuff injury (as well as others) and sort of fell into acting? I've read interviews with him where he talks about the perceptions of masculinity and how they're changing. Great work, fellas. I'd put this film up there with #RWRB for me.

Magical Adorabella

Loved it, great how they showed there is no shame to being gay. Brilliant acting, glad I saw it with you precious men. Enjoy your reviews, keep showing all the awesome LGBTQ stories out there.

Denny

First of all, let me say how much I love you guys and watch your reviews and reactions all the time I am watching the reaction to Handsome Devil. I too love Nicholas Galatzine and think he is great in all his films of which many are gay characters. He has said he “identifies as straight.” However…. At the beginning of your review for Handsome Devil, Alex, you mentioned feeling a little weird about giving so much time to an actor who is not gay. I personally think it should not matter given the strong performances he has given. I do understand what you are saying Alex, but for me, if Nicholas has empathy to play the characters he plays, and we love him in these roles, why not have him in these roles. As you both have said, it is important to have positive gay representation and I think Nicholas chooses roles that are positive representation. And Happy Pride🌈

Dennis Verner

As usual for me, this comment is so out of date. I don't think anyone has mentioned that the sexuality of the character Ned is really not defined. The writer director of the film, John Butler, has said, "He could be gay, he could be straight. But more than anything, he is just a lonely guy who needs a friend," "There is no expected romantic outcome between the two guys."
