Yay!! I’ve been waiting for this! Thanks

Diane Furlong

Good Morning, it’s 5:45AM here in NY and I’m going to enjoy watching this . Thanks Alex and Josh!

Graham & Ruth May

Thank goodness for Young Royals uncut! ❤️👑❤️👏 Thanks for giving my day a huge uplift, Josh and Alex! x❤️

Clash

Thank you Alex and Josh, you have both made my day ❤️😘

Stian Kristoffersen

Yes!! Something to look forward to when I get home from work. 😀

GBF movie reaction when guys?? Haha of course I’m loving the continuation of Young Royals tho 👑

I’m not good at abbreviations and this really isn’t any of my business but what is GBF? Thanks

Graham & Ruth May

Just watched this with you guys. You’re right, it is a hell of an episode to go back in on and I am so pleased that you took the trouble to rewatch it. I didn’t realise that your original reaction was destroyed! But not a bad thing in a way, because you seemed to really appreciate the fine details from the position of hindsight. I can’t wait for your rewatch of episode 4, given the extreme emotional drama experienced by Wille and Simon. Why is it episodes 4 and 5 in both seasons that really put us through the wringer? 🥺😭🫣

I believe there is a 2013 film literally called G.B.F as in Gay Best Friend. I've not watched it myself but perhaps I should at some point. This might be what Henry is referring to.

love how alex still cant pronounce "hillerska" after 2 seasons :) also, thanks for re-watching! i assumed you just had the unedited version from your original reaction! trivia.. august's last name is horn and he comes from the family name "horn of arnas." i'm guessing arnas is the region or the name of the estate. - edit - re the call / notification from his mum.. when wille was talking to august about him staying the weekend.. wille's phone is ringing and he looks at it, but ignores it. i'm guessing that was his mother calling him to let him know what had happened. since he didnt answer, she called the school.

I'm so glad you lads have gone back for a re-review of YR. I'm sure like so many others, I only discovered this show because of Heartstopper. Young Royals led to Heartbreak High and Sex Education, which led to a few Italian shows. The rabbit hole was very deep. lol

Frances

I remember the first time you guys were watching this episode and Alex sweared so hard, that you even bleeped it out 😭😂🙈

To your discussion at 15.30 about Wilhelm thinking about his sexuality in the show, Edvin has pointed out in an interview that they have deliberately left Wilhelm unlabelled. All Wille ever mentions is that he's with Simon or that he wants to be with Simon. He said that they wanted to show that being unlabelled is also valid.

Dionne Lakey

38.44 excuse me, Nick Nelson would be stealing meds from his father Stéphane, not his mum Olivia Colman (Sarah)!

Dionne Lakey

47.04 Wille did get a call/notification from his mum: when he was talking about going Bjarstaad in the previous scene with Simon (where they had their first kiss). You see him look at his phone briefly then ignore it and put it away to sort out the weekend with Simon. Really sad to notice that on a rewatch. Because if he had answered it then, Simon would have been with him when he found out the bad news. Instead he gets whisked away and though Simon tries to console him via text - they all go unanswered- until they break up in the next episode. I think it's sad because this could have been a moment that would have brought them closer - instead Wille keeps Simon distant from his life, never confiding in him or explaining to him what is going on - until he finally comes to Simon's house in Season 2 and finally communicates to him the politics of August being his heir and telling Simon how he really feels.

Cathy Mills

When he was talking to Simon about August staying the weekend his phone rang and he ignored it. I'm assuming that was his mum. So she called the school instead. Thank you for your reactions. As always I love them 🙂

Dionne Lakey

Thank you so much for doing a rewatch to replace the lost footage - you are stars! Rewatches are so interesting as Josh says because you understand the characters better. I've been finding on heartstopper rewatches of both seasons that we are getting to know a bit more about each character (subtle hints were dropped in season 1 with no context to Charlie's ED and Darcy's masking), as we become closer 'friends' with the characters.

Dionne Lakey

Yes there are a lot of RWRB and YR similarities - even the director of RWRB and YR's creator have chatted on an insta post about doing a crossover - Lisa said, "well the Swedish royal family IS related to the British one". Plus there were quite a few fanfics written about Henry and Alex bonding with Wille and Simon after season 1 came out. Also remember that both Alex and Simon are half latina - hence the similar looks.

Marstrand

Thank you 🫶🏻🫶🏻. Been waiting for this 💜.

Shari

Love the rewatch and thank you for doing this … as if you don’t already have many shows to first time watch these days. One thing… and maybe it’s just me and my hearing…. but is it possible to make the volume on YR louder? I can hear you two just fine but YR is very low and hard to hear for me.

Susanne

Wilhelm´s problem is not that he likes a boy, his problem is that he´s a prince.

Noah

Fun fact: just like Chloe Hayden, who plays Quinni, Frida Argento, who plays Sara, is also autistic! It's really quite groundbreaking that both shows employed autistic actors to play autistic characters, as this is something you very rarely see.

Frances

Alex was actually right on the money about Wille never questioning his sexuality or his feelings for Simon. There’s an interview with the writer of YR and another one with Edvin and Omar where they mentioned that it was never about Wille being confused about wether he wants to be with Simon or not but rather the consequences it would have for him being with someone of the same sex.

Jennifer Carrigg

How to get prince hair: a large round brush, blow dryer, and some hairspray. Thanks for re-recording! I enjoyed this ❤️

Grace

YES!

I find it difficult to pick favourite episodes because I love everything about Young Royals and every episode has something special about it for me. But agreed, episodes 4 and 5 are really top tier. I have a particular soft spot for season 1 episode 2, though and of course, the finale of season 2. I could go on! 😂❤️👑❤️

Oops! - problem isn’t that he’s homosexual, it’s that he’s poor and seen as an outsider because he’s not of the same social class as the others.

YR writers: Lets make the schedule of the parents visit very clear. Viewers (when nobody goes home the first night): This is really confusing! :)

August's stepdad is in fleabag I only just realised he's Claire, only took fifth watch with you guys lol 🤣

Professor Wonkadoodle

On Simon's dad: His whole family has gone no-contact with him, he deals booze to minors illegally, claims his medication is a necessary prescription but the sheer fact that he owns a literal bagful of it suggests that he's lying, he still passes out drunk in the middle of the day in a way that Simon is clearly used to (he knows to roll him onto his back, knew to check Wille's pupils for signs of sobriety later on), and most of all, when he gets angry at/worried about Simon in the next episode his reaction is violence; he physically shoves him and holds him against a wall. It clearly was not a safe home environment for Sara and Simon when they were growing up, and he's definitely not fully sober and honest now either. Yes, Simon is taking advantage of him now, but in my opinion it doesn't even begin to even the scales.

Yes I don't like Felices mom either putting those expectations on Felice, that she can't live up to. She wants her to ride a horse, either because she projects her failed dream on her, or she used to love riding herself, so she wants her to as well or that its a classy sport, that people with their status or simply just girls should do. Whatever the case Felice doesn't seem to enjoy it, but don't know how to tell her mom. And then their is the thing with Wilhelm. I believe that at this moment it's 50/50 Felice really liking him, and her knowing getting with him eventually is, what her mom would very much like her to do, so she also feels pressured to persue him romantically, and when she kissed him, I think some of it could have been her carried away by the moment and maybe thinking, that if they got together, at least that would make her mom happy, because Felice thinks, that she is disappointing her mom in many ways, so maybe that could in a way make up for that. But they should just stay good friends. Sad Eric had to die, he's such a likable character and a great brother to Wilhelm, but they wanted to challenge Wilhelm even more, losing one of the people he can truely trust/confide in/that really stands by him and truely knows him, and put even more pressure on him being the crown prince now. When you talked about the grey lady, it almost sounded like she was a ghost roaming the halls. 😆 and Joshs face while saying "I don't want to know what your fantasy is" 🤣

Yes, I’m glad someone else saw that he got a call but then ignored it as he was talking to Simon. I’m sure it was his mother.

Watching that last scene where Simon loses it and is punching August on the ground, and then gets roundly scolded by Ayub and Rosh afterwards. This is such a a strong and complex scene. Simon has so many points of relationship in this series: his immediate and core relationship with Wilhelm (complicated by plot journey, but clearly fundamental and maybe inevitable). Then his boundary-setting, assertive (aggressive) relationship with August. His complicated relationship with his father. His happy-but-fraught relationship with Sarah. His honest but supportive relationship with his friends Ayub and Rosh. And finally, his loving but uncomplicated relationship with his mother. The relationships with Wilhelm and his mother both feel most fundamental. What's core about Simon is that in spite of all the plot threads, Simon is fundamentally aware of his worth (a characteristic Wilhelm notices almost immediately). This concept of core worth has been resonating since I read a great book a few years back by Richard Isay (b 1934, d 2012) titled "Becoming Gay: The Journey to Self-Acceptance". Richard Isay was a psychoanalyst and gay activist in New York from the 1970's forward, who followed a life journey from when he was married and in the closet in the 1960s until he came out in the 70s, and counselled many gay men throughout the 1970's into the 2000s. In 1991 he fought to have the the American Psychoanalytic Association adopt a non-discrimination policy for the training of analytic candidates and change its position statement on homosexuality. One of the themes he talks about frequently in this book is the concept of resilience in the gay men that he observed across decades in his practise. For gay men whose parents were fundamentally loving and accepting of their children, even if they didn't fully comprehend the journey that their children were on, then those men had resilience and coping skills to navigate the turbulent times they were living in. Simon's father is troubled, of course. But on the first introduction to the character, he accepts his son's identity. And the relationship with Simon's mother is beautiful to watch. She loves him fully. And from that Simon is equipped to take on any adversity. Whereas Wilhelm's mother and father, while almost Shakespearean characters, are largely absent for him, when not outright sabotaging. Which makes his road that much more difficult.

Wilhelm's phone rang as he spoke to Simon. Presumably it said "Mama", but he dismissed the call, being totally occupied with Simon in that moment....

Totally agree. I have seen very few comments like this and recognition that Simon's father was abusive to him in that scene. Simon desperately wants to be able to look after his family like his father ought to have but he gets it wrong when he gets desperate, and his is just a teenage boy with no one to guide him.

Thank you for stating this fact. I was thinking about the same think. I can barely hear the actors. Although I should say that I wat he'd it a few times, in Swedish with subtitles and I kind of remember the lines ......
