... Wow. TIL. Somehow, I hadn't expected to learn any real world stuff from this comic. So that's why we generally cook all beans, and sometimes cook the fsck out of them. So it seems like something in their special training makes them especially resistant to this stuff. Not resistant enough that they're functional, mind you. Just the bit about nobody dying yet. At least, it's my guess that it's the training and crap that Kraon puts everyone through that's kept them from dying. It doesn't feel like it'd be due to the incompetence of the opposition. Sure, the oral pathway does reduce the effectiveness of this in our world, but not by enough for what Saran describes here to be anything but lethal.

Oh, yeah, beans are vicious if not thoroughly cooked into oblivion, as I learned first hand once upon a time lol. These ones are loosely based on IRL castor beans whose symptoms, if my research was reliable, are similar enough to influenza that you wouldn't be blamed for an initial misdiagnose. I also liked the part where they made WMDs with'em so I figured I'd toss that in for fun XD
