To be fair, considering their upbringing, Kheil's amazingly well adjusted. Though, I'd guess the answer to "does she have a choice" is about as close to 'hell no' as Kraon feels he can get away with.

He's probably been failing her constantly since day 1. The only difference is, now he's being explicit about it. At first, I was thinking maybe he was doing something right. But having thought about it more, her being this well adjusted is probably mostly Oz and Al's doing. I believe we haven't heard the history on how Al came into the picture, so at this point, it sounds like it might be the best thing Kraon did as a parent for Kheil was allow his chief of security to get away with adopting someone without asking for permission first. To be clear, I'm not forgetting the 'feeding her' bit, but considering that it's a fundamental part of his scheme, it doesn't really count. Likewise, founding the academy to let her have more friends also doesn't really count, as that's also a fundamental part of his scheme. Neither really depend on the person Kheil is, even if they do fundamentally require a person to be in the position she's in.
