Although this is a book I’m quite proud of, unfortunately I later discovered that the final third of the storyboard pages for the entire book had been lost.
I checked all of my other files, and this was the only book whose storyboards were incomplete. It reminded me that during the production of this book, we were going through a crisis caused by a serotonin deficiency.
Both my work partner and I were having an extremely hard time during that period. Because we were working in such close proximity, we barely remembered whose files were saved on whose computer when exchanging data. We were solely focused on finishing and submitting the work as quickly as possible, which ultimately led to chaos in file management and storage.
On top of that, this book was especially difficult to draw, particularly because the characters’ full-body color schemes were almost entirely black, which posed a huge challenge for me during post-production.
Ironically, however, it was precisely the suffering brought on by this book that helped shape one of the most recognizable aspects of my later style: the way I handle black shading.
