Oh dang. This one’s gonna hurt.

charlie duff

just to say its estimated by the army that Desmond doss actually saved 100+ people but doss felt it was no more than 50 so they compromised and said 75 also mel gibson has said they had left things out as they were too unbelievable for the movie

Kim Magee

Cool was going to watch this today but Martin stayed home sick 😷

TurtZ

This movie is one of my all time favorites, but please put The Greatest Beer Run Ever (2022) on your radar I think yall will love it

Lee Shafer

One of my all time fav movies , incredibly written and acted out and most of all so very accurate .

Darren P

the only movie where they had to tone down the real story to make it more believable lol!

Jan T

I hadn’t seen this before. What an astonishing film. The performances, the direction, all five star. I’m glad to have learnt the story of such a heroic individual. Thanks Rob and Trin for choosing this one.

Thoma

Rob, at the very beginning where you said, "Oh, that was Mel Gibson. Maybe I'm wrong," is Mel Gibson's son. You weren't far off!

Beth

I really hope someday you watch Glory. I suggest it for every category that it fits Great reaction as alwsys

According to Chat GPT4, approximately 77,000 to 110,000 Japanese were on Okinawa during the Battle of Hacksaw Ridge.

“..giving aid to the injured until he was himself seriously wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. Rather than call another aid man from cover, he cared for his own injuries and waited five hours before litter bearers reached him and started carrying him to cover. The trio was caught in an enemy tank attack and Private First Class Doss, seeing a more critically wounded man nearby, crawled off the litter and directed the bearers to give their first attention to the other man. Awaiting the litter bearers' return, he was again struck, this time suffering a compound fracture of one arm. With magnificent fortitude he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station.”

Mel Gibson may be a flawed man but he is an amazing film maker. The Japanese soldiers were told horror stories about what the Americans would do if they took their position so that they would fight even harder. They also had massive supply issues so they were starving and sick. That combined with the miliary ethic of leaned towards the "death before dishonor" mentality, it pretty much turned the pacific campaign into a meat grinder. As brutal as the African and European campaigns were from what we are told the island hopping campaign was almost double the number of casualties. That part of the war was a literal hellscape for both sides.

Doss’s protection was from above. No doubt this was God’s protection 🙏🏼

Ninaofthe90s

If I didn't know any better I would have said that some of these scenes were incredibly over the top. It usually takes me out of the movie. But in this case I know that they actually had to tone it down. And that Desmond did all these things. I'm glad that I know that. Very powerful. Mel Gibson is amazing. His son Mylo is in the movie and he looks a lot like him. Mel is a lot older now ☺️

Titan99snpr

Honestly it would be cool to see you two react to band of brothers and the pacific. Both are miniseries with 10 episodes each. Really good stuff

Sela

and Mel Gibson chose not to include this because the audience would find it too unbelievable

Alyssa Dyson

Lets cryyyy today 😩😭💜 this movie is so damn good.

Ninaofthe90s

Hugo Weaving was only in the first half of the movie - but he was so devastatingly good

o.o

first time watching this and wow, it was heavy. I've heard of this battle, but it seems it was overshadowed by the battle of Iwo Jima. Incredible film, and a great reaction.

A heck of a film!! THANK YOU for choosing this one! One of my favorite war films ever!! Yeah, it’s pretty accurate. Mel Gibson even left out other incredible things Doss did because Gibson thought it was so crazy that audiences would think it wasn’t real, even though it was. And yep, Doss did help the Japanese, too. That’s true. He saw suffering people, regardless of what side, and he helped. Definitely go look up more about Demond Doss because it’s just incredible even the details that are left out from the film. Andrew Garfield was perfectly cast for this role…Garfield puts his heart and soul in every role. You mentioned Braveheart was more like Hollywood and this was more grounded in reality. And that’s true. While Braveheart was backed by Gibson’s studio, it also had ties to other Hollywood studios, and as such, had to fit into that marketability Hollywood approves of. Hacksaw Ridge, however, is an indie film & so Gibson had more creative control to do what he wanted to do. Gibson was sad that Hollywood backs so many superhero films about fictional heroes but when you wanna make a film about real life heroes like this, Hollywood doesn’t wanna back those films bc they think it’s not marketable enough to get people into theaters. So he had to go indie if he wanted to make Hacksaw Ridge. But because it was an indie film and had a smaller budget, it only had half the days of shooting Braveheart had, which meant a lot of things were rushed. Even in that time crunch, Gibson still managed to create a powerful film. Doss’ story deserves to be more well known and I’m glad a film was finally made about him! Also love what you said, that there’s so many individual stories from the war that are yet to be more well known, but are probably just as incredible! Thanks for a great reaction as always! Rewatching this with y’all reminded me just how much this film strikes a chord in me, I was crying along with y’all.

This was my one pick & I am so glad you picked it even though it did not win the polls. I just saw this the first time a year ago, I don't know how I missed it, but I was blown away. Such a good movie. Desmond Doss deserved to be known. Like you said we know there are many other stories of courage out there I am glad we got to see this one. I do know that the movie, Andrew Garfield & Mel Gibson were all nominated for Oscars for this, so at least it was recognized. Wonderful reaction to this.

Cindy

War movies can be difficult to watch as war is universal. We are all touched by it in some way, regardless of our nationality. Rob, you mentioned Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Together they produced the 10 part series for HBO "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" that surpasses Saving Private Ryan as BoB and Pacific are very true stories. You both probably need a break from the tragedy of war, but when you are ready I highly recommend these two, but specifically Band of Brothers.

Kevin Fog

This is my favorite movie, thank you so much for your reaction! <3

kimburley
