Dexter S07E12 Surprise, Motherfucker FULL REACTION

Comments

Kyle

Can’t wait for soa tomorrow! I’m gonna start watching dexter with you guys as well

minkit

seeing yall begging for Dexter not to do the *thing* at the end of the episode, knowing that Deb does is so much fun. I remember my jaw being on the floor. Back to back, s6 and s7 finals, having to wait for the next season after those jaw droppers was nuts.

2026-09-19 16:00 The scene where Deb breaks down and rushes to LaGuerta’s body was not scripted. Jennifer improvised that and they kept it. And no wonder they did. When someone asks me about the rawest, more pure emotions I’ve seen in acting, this is the scene that I forward them to. I cannot begin to describe how out of this world her acting is, but you guys know that. RIP Maria. Not always our favourite character, but a really strong one. On to season 8!

When Dexter visited Ms. Estrada, he introduced himself as Arthur Curry. So he's now Aquaman. 😂

Octavia

I honestly don't know if it would've made a bit of difference... probably not. But I think it was unwise for LaGuerta to push for Deb to kill him. Maybe if she had pushed her to arrest him instead. Either way, probably not though. But that 'shoot him' tact was never gonna happen. And once again... Dexter is spared from dealing with a truly inexcusable moral dilemma. Once again, a woman in his life does the dirty work... so no one has to lose the tint off the rosiest of Dexter glasses. It's a sucker punch of a scene, so mind-blowing. But underneath it's another cop-out. Literally.

Not only did they get rid of the moral dilemma, they also gave him a very convenient way of appearing innocent. I know it happens a lot in the series, but this one is just… so convenient. LaGuerta’s death would’ve been the most suspicious thing ever after her whole debacle with Dexter, but not anymore because of Estrada. I wish they explored more of these themes.

Bradley Weeks

Well this was a surprise! Why wouldn't Maria call for backup when she got the call from Estrada?

Jan T

One of the most shocking season finales I’ve ever seen. I really think Dexter knew Deb would never shoot him. But that only left her with the worst possible choice. Heartbreaking seeing her rush to Maria at the end. Just crushing for Debra.

Jan T

Maybe because Dexter already had set her up to look like a fool in front of the entire department before. Maybe she decided she needed to be sure of the situation before she called it in?

Zwopt

this might’ve been where dexter fully lost me being on his side, debra having to kill maria is just too much, the fact that he was gonna kill her, there’s no more defending that he’s doing it to better the world, he is a selfish, evil serial killer, who just so happens to kill “bad people”, oh yeah and cops who are good at their job..

James

10 minutes into the episode and I’m screaming. Him being walked through the building in handcuffs was literally a nightmare scenario SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER!! I love Doakes. I don’t even know what’s gonna happen now Jesus Christ Deb cannot catch a break she just had to kill Maria I don’t even know what to say. I wonder how she’ll handle something like that. As other people said I cannot support Dexter for this he was going to murder a completely innocent woman (Maria of all people) just to save himself Your 100% right Deb’s actress is phenomenal any scene she’s in makes me want to cry.

kalindi

I've loved watching your Dexter reactions so far ❤️ Really hope that once you're done with OG Dexter, you'll be watching New Blood, Original Sin & Resurrection when it comes out 🙏🏼

Jodi Lynn

Is anyone else having trouble getting the sync up version video to load? I’ve been trying since last night and I’m just getting a spinning wheel.

Worded

It worked fine when I tried it just now, but I've had the endless spinning wheel with it in the past. I usually use the Streamable link.

Jodi Lynn

Maybe I’ll try again tonight. I really only use the YouTube link since I like to sync up with my own copy.

Jodi Lynn

Actually, I was able to get it to load through the Patreon website instead of the app. Maybe the app is just being glitchy for me today. 🙃

Michael Celia

Man, I missed Doakes...and his...two-size-too-small shirts... Seeing him back - even in flashbacks - was the highlight of this episode for me.

Anthony Fioravaniti

She did an awesome job on The Exorcism of Emily Rose and I just recently watched a movie called Quarantine with her, a Zombie type movie where she's a reporter who gets trapped in a quarantined building. The end of the movie had me stressing when Jennifer got to do what she does so well.

AlexBoss

Reading all these replies i can see the fandom in steroids. The whole point of the show is not what a good character Dexter is or how awesome Deb is. They wanted to tell a story. And the story for Dexter this season is what happens when he feels that he is in love for the first time, losing control and making human mistakes and the story for Deb was how the fact that Dexter is her brother and her knowing his secret would ultimately affect/ corrupt her. And they told this story very competently. My only gripe that i alluded in my previous post is that they should have had Deb, frame Hannah for her poisoning. It would have made for better drama in my opinion. First it would gradually show Deb going down the dark side, slowly compromising herself for her brother (she would have framed Hannah to (in her mind) protect her brother from a killer). First framing Hannah (a person who would deserve it in her book) and then killing Laguerta as it happened. then it would also create a vendetta that Hannah would have against her (and the writers knowing that Hannah would make it out the season alive, could have used that to better effect), which to a point was also achieved with this ending And it would create good drama between Dexter and Deb, if Dexter learnt of the fact that she had framed Hannah (after Dexter had given her up to the police), which would certainly create some resentment on his part, but then he would also feel responsible for his sister killing an innocent woman. With the way they ended the season, i never understood the narrative thread they were creating for themselves with having Hannah poisoning Deb. And i'm not even going to mention the missed opportunities the above scenario would have created for season 8. Anyway... nonetheless a good ending to a great season.

MKeiran92

Find it really interesting that back in S3 Dexter had to stop Miguel from going after LaGuerta and now here he is 4 seasons later doing exactly the same thing.

Octavia

Of course Hannah poisoned Deb. Hannah isn't a good person. Her kills aren't all defensively justifiable. She seems the personification of 'want, take, have'... and eliminates what gets in her way. I can't believe anyone would truly doubt Deb. For Deb to have done such a thing, like frame Hannah... it would have completely lessened the impact of Deb shooting LaGuerta in the end. It would have been a big swerve from her... to have drugged herself would be a big manipulation on Dexter. So then the end with LaGuerta would be almost expected. But we see her completely broken in that ending... in a corner, overwhelmed... because *that* is the moment she has to fully choose Dexter & darkness over all her standards & beliefs. If she had already gone off by poisoning herself... then the ending doesn't hit as powerfully as a dilemma for Deb.

Rob & Trin React!

Not knowing the ending we are just running through the usual TV cliches and not actually doubting Deb at all, even said we are team Deb but not sure what the show might throw at us. Unless you are talking about the general audience then we totally get it 🥰

Octavia

Oh hey! Not talking about you two, but the wider audience. There was even a comment that Deb framing Hannah would have been the better storyline... so I was putting out why I don't think so at all. Because I think that would lessen the crushing choice Deb has to make at the end. You two are always in Deb's corner.

Rob & Trin React!

yeah would hated that version lol, one of our fave characters 💕

AlexBoss

Lessened the impact? Are you kidding? Deb just went from acting holier than thou earlier in the episode when talking to Hannah to actually shooting an innocent person in the span of a couple of hours. For me that's a somewhat weak characterization and it lessens Deb's character. If they had shown earlier that Deb would be willing to bend the rules in order to protect her brother and punish a person she knew was guilty, it would have shown to the audience, that she was on the path and it wouldn't feel completely out of left field for her character. I believe this is the one time in season the writers opted to go with shock and subversion rather than good storytelling. (not to mention it would justify a lot more some of the choices they took in season 8 which will seem weird) Also i never said that it was beyond Hannah to do that, i said it would be a better story line and more consistent with some of the choices they would make in the future. I don't want to say more as there are obvious spoilers for Rob and Trin... However most if not all of Hannah's kills were "defensive" in nature. Not justified, but you can follow the logic behind them. The woman she killed with Wayne was made in an extreme situation, getting carried away in the moment as a teenager. The councilor she killed, sexually abused her and her friend. Her husband was trying to force her to get an abortion (a logical person would just leave that situation, but ... whatever) so she felt like he was threatening her ideal way of family... or something. Beverly as i mentioned was probably a mercy kill, and Price threatened to expose her and Dexter. So like i said. Not justified and she deserves jail, but you can see how a person might get to that point. It's not like "I NEED to kill someone, so i'm going to search for someone who i deem worthy of killing."

James

Idk as a first time viewer myself I really didn’t see a problem with how this was done at all. I genuinely thought this was one of the better seasons and season finales. There are Dexter defenders who think he can do no wrong so I think people are just pointing out that he’s not some great person to those people in particular. I don’t see the problem in watching the show that way either. It shows the decline of Dexter how in season 1 he was so meticulous and careful but over the seasons he’s been getting more messy and breaking the code more often

Rob & Trin React!

Really love that the show challenges Dexter in different ways each season and we are super hyped for season 8! Then we move onto the other Dexter shows, we are super invested 💕

AlexBoss

It was one of the best seasons and i liked the season finale. I just thought they missed an opportunity with the whole Den and Hannah poisoning thing. Especially for what it means for Deb's character. But since you are a first time viewer, you can't fully understand what i'm talking about until you see season 8. So i won't say anything more.

Michele G

Reading all the comments and no one mentioned that Deb also had a reason to shoot Maria. She had evidence that would send Deb to prison right along with Dexter. So she didn’t just make a decision to save Dexter, she was saving herself as well.

Simon S

They mentioned they would watch the sequel, then the prequel. So...yes they are!

Simon S

I think you are forgetting that LaGuerta is far from innocent. She constantly belittled people under her (Deb especially). She blackmailed Matthews to get a promotion and when she lost her job to Pascal, she slept with her fiance just to get back at her. And didn't feel guilty about any of it. So yes, she was a bad person. She may not have fitted Dexter's "code", but she was definitely not an innocent bystander in all of this. Dexter's #1 rule - don't get caught. Yes he was selfish, but it was to protect himself and Deb.

AlexBoss

Also no one mentioning the worse fact about all this, that Deb actually didn't have to shoot maria herself. That's what makes it more out of character for me. She could have (with a heavy heart) left the container and let Dexter do what he does. The fact that the writers had her pull the trigger shows to me that their main objective was shock. (as i mentioned in another post having her steadily fall to the dark side, would have made more sense).

Marcus

The thing is, that reasoning wasn't shown in any way, neither before the deed nor after. thus it wasn't why she did it. Things like that don't matter if you the writer don't make them matter. Plus, Deb is a very moral person. For her to take the step to kill someone there needs to be progress, and something for her to do it. And we need to SEE that progress and/or thought process. If she killed to save herself we need to SEE that process and decision happening. We need to see her waging it all. Her doing it out of the blue makes zero sense. You the audience can make that headcanon afterwards however you want. But the truth is, the writers didn't consider it.

Marcus

The whole point of the show has in fact changed throughout the show. The early seasons were all about a killer realizing how he's actually human. These later seasons are not about that at all. And this season being about him being in love? Dude, you forget about Rita? He was in love with Rita for god's sake. He loved her beyond this world. And if you're talking about infatuation... he's felt that too, with Laila for example, with plenty of women. All this is is just retconning all of Dexter's development and putting him on square one again. Seriously. You wanna redo season 1 again is what you're saying. I despise this season and Hannah and these writers, for completely pissing on literally all the characters of the show. None of their histories and characters matter to them. All seasons after Rita's death, especially since Lumen's season, it's like everything Dexter's been through don't matter. Instead Dexter is like an empty suit, a doll, for showrunners to just do whatever they want with.

Marcus

Deb framing Hanna? Do you hear yourself? Makes for good drama... oh okay. You don't care about character depth clearly... Deb is a highly moral person and cop. You're saying it would show her "gradual" turn to the "dark side". Except no it wouldn't. Deb just framing Hanna out nowhere is NOT gradual in any way. You need to show her gradually siding with Dex. Deb, in this episode, pulling out similar manipulation towards Maria as Dex did, that is a gradual shift. Sadly the writer didn't care to explore that shift. Even though they could've done it much earlier. Instead they made her just go from Deb to someone else. Just like how they made Maria go from someone all about justice to someone all about murder (while still arguing to Deb that she's better than Dex) in a matter of minutes. With zero character justification 😂

Marcus

I see zero people that think Dex can do no wrong. So where do you get that from? People have their criticisms. I don't think it's about them thinking he can do no wrong. I think that's a misunderstanding of what those people's criticisms are about.

Marcus

Just proving how the later showrunners were all about retconning and destroying his character.

Agnes

Dexter has escalated completely now. Anybody who’s in the way he’ll just get rid of, even Maria smh. And I feel so bad for Deb, she’s just going through it since day 1. I feel like Dexter has corrupted her “innocence” and her sense of justice. She’s so dependent on him for her emotional well being that she’ll do anything to keep him in her life, it’s so unhealthy 🤒 But love deb and the show, can’t wait for the next season! I’ve never watched this far before :)

AlexBoss

What you say here about the slow process of Deb reaching the point to shoot Maria, is what i was saying earlier, which you dismissed out of hand as it stains your favorite character. But that's ok. I understand how fandoms and ships work. Usually to the detriment of good storytelling.

AlexBoss

Oh you're one of those... ok. What i was saying earlier about the fandom...

AlexBoss

Also you saying that Dexter loved Rita beyond this world, is mostly to do with you and how you saw the show and the characters. Dexter did not fall in love with Rita. He realised at the end that he loved her, but that is very different from your statements and how you chose to interpret the show. That is why this season bugs you so much. That's not the writers' problem though...
