Barbie 2023 FULL REACTION

Comments

Anthony Ancona

Rob and Trin, thank you! I am looking forward to see how you reacted!

Octavia

Been looking forward to this. I think Barbie can be enjoyed on multiple levels. Depending on your interests. It's bright, fun, funny, catchy... and as a satire it's both whimsical & wry. America Ferrera's speech about being a woman... spoke to me deeply. (Of course, men have a lot of conflicting weight of expectations on their shoulders, too. And the movie touches on that to a lesser degree. But this is about the feminine perspective & role reversal.)

Bradley Weeks

I've been wanting to watch this for a while but never got around to it. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was funny, clever and silly. It felt like all the actors had fun making this. And in the end, I learned I am Kenough.

Kim Magee

I enjoyed this more on the 2nd watch, liked it first time but have since watched it a few times and love it, esp that women do feel they can't spread themselves far enough to deal with kids, husband's, jobs, house work, problems, looking after themselves etc, I mean hubby sits on the lounge watching tv while I'm cooking meals for autism kids that don't eat this or that, so while I'm juggling microwaves, the oven, stove, chopping and serving, the kids will walk past him and ask mum to help them with stuff, and we often feel like we aren't doing good enough in any area of our life, then hormone waves enforce the voice in our head, that we aren't enough, its overwhelming, I saw a thing that about 80% of kids complain about hating their parents in the teenage years, esp mums, but as adults appreciate us

Kim Magee

Really love that it points out equality can go to far

SlipS_Tiger

Despite not being the targeted audience for this film, as a guy, I found it really entertaining. I don’t know if this is a controversial opinion for any Barbie enthusiast, but I would place this film under the 2004 animated film Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper.

Ben

You guys gotta watch 2001! The opening is a 2001 reference

I love this movie so much lol I was one of the people who did the Barbenheimer double feature and seeing both back to back made for a VERY long day, but Barbie after Oppenheimer was like the cherry on top. Just a fun, (mostly) wholesome breath of fresh air. There's a strong message here that I wholeheartedly agree with and I love that you didn't feel like targeted Rob because it truly wasn't supposed to be the case. This movie did receive some backlash because of it, but I think people who came away from this sincerely thinking the message was "girls good, boys bad" had to have been watching with their eyes and ears shut. The men in Barbieland were oppressed and the movie was just as much about men needing their own sense of self outside of their Barbies or even the Patriarchy as it was about women having agency and knowing they can be whatever they want. Also, this movie had SO many known actors lol it's hilarious. Ryan Gosling surprised me as a scene stealer because before this movie I had no idea how good he was at comedic roles! And I'm Just Ken has unironically been on my playlist ever since this movie dropped.

SYN

1. Ryan Gosling is singing! He actually has a band called Dead Man’s Bones 2. The song What was I made for” written for Barbie 3. Idk if yall noticed but the other Ken he had beef with was played by Simu Liu aka Shang Chi

SYN

Also look up the I’m just Ken performance from the Oscars …it’s great! 😂

Kim Magee

Ruth handler died early 2000s, the woman playing her is Rhea Pearlman who played Carla in the tv show Cheers, also was married to Danny Devito

Kim Magee

Yep what I was made for was song of the year, I play it when I need a good cry, as a mum you often feel everyone forgets your a person, not just the family chef, dry cleaner, cleaner, tutor, problem solver, etc that you also have interests and things you want to do, want time for yourself, to talk about things, interests, sometime you feel like no one cares about you, but at the same time you know they need you more than anyone else

Octavia

I knew this was gonna be good when the opening was a clever play on the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey. But the movie really had me at the "you're so beautiful" / "I know it" bus stop scene. Executives wanted Greta Gerwig to take it out. Which is nuts. That moment is the heart of the movie for me... beauty is in being yourself, in being imperfect, in all ages, we're all beautiful. And every wrinkle is a moment felt & etched.

Wendy Sparks

Everyone needs an Allan on their side.

FedeM

I just adore this movie. You can take it at any level you want, you can have a laugh, you can take the in-your-face messages and run with it, you can appreciate the production goldmine this was, or you can explore all the subtle ways it makes you feel uncomfortable. All of the above on a rewatch is much advised ;)

Kim Magee

Apparently they were paying homage to 2001 space odyssey, matrix, Saturday night fever, wizard of Oz and more

Hazzy

I enjoined pitch perfect let’s see if I’ll enjoy this one 😂

Elle

“What was I made for” by Billie Eilish was written specifically for this movie. Her and her brother Finneas won their second Oscar for it too (along with a host of other awards). Also, if you haven’t already, I highly recommend watching Ryan Gosling perform “I’m just Ken” at the 2024 Oscars, with an appearance by Slash lol. Was brilliant! I’ve watched this movie several times now and am always tickled. Great fun. I had loads of Barbies as a kid in the 80s. The day to night barbie and peaches and cream barbie which were in the movie, along with Barbie and Derek (not Ken) from Barbie and the rockers, and definitely had more than one “weird barbie” My brother also regularly had them take their life from the top story of the Barbie dream house haha

Eve

Tris has never seen toy story?! We badly need an animation month! 🤣

MarySoul

America was beyond fantastic with that speech delivery.

Kim Magee

The cast in this movie was so good. I don't know if anyone missed it but America Ferrera used to be ugly Betty

MarySoul

I so second that 👆

Michael Celia

She definitely earn the Oscar nod with that monologue.

Michael Celia

When this movie was first announced, pretty much everyone expected it to be a vapid cash grab, not the deep introspection on existentialism and what it is to be human. And of course, Margot Robbie absolutely nailed the role... My only complaint: Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu "beaching off" each other only turned out to be a dance-off...

dasgrove

Saw this as the second film during Barbihiemer. The gummies were kicking pretty hard by then. I hope to be able to remember the plot after this rewatch.

James

I went to theater to see Oppenheimer and was heavily considering waiting an hour and seeing Barbie too but I never saw it. The trend was called Barbenhiemer. This was not what I was expecting at all it was so much funnier than I thought. Very surprised by this movie glad you guys enjoyed it

Bradley Weeks

"Closer to fine" is now stuck in my head.😆 Excellent song choice.

Chrissy

Ah this is exactly the pick-me-up I need right now!

Cindy

I had an original Barbie, Ken (the original had that fuzz for hair and it would rub off after awhile so ended up with bald Ken), Midge (no the original Midge was NOT pregnant, she was Barbie's best friend). Midge also had freckles. I also had Skipper who originally was Barbie's younger sister, not babysitter. Also my parents could not afford to buy new outfits so my mother made an entire wardrobe for my dolls and gave them to me for Christmas.

Flopsi80

I have to admit watching it with you guys was fun. 😁

Sherry Bandito

I’m going to give it a try with y’all.. I loved playing with Barbie but I couldn’t even watch 1/2 of the movie.. but it should be fun with you both

Torrit

The soundtrack for this was written and produced by Mark Ronson thats why it is so catchy. Longtime ledgendary british producer/DJ. Produced for Adel, Amy Winehouse, Duran Duran, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and many more...... and yes Rob, even Dua Lipa. He wrote Uptown Funk, the man knows pop tunes :D

Crusader

Ruth Handler died 23 years ago, She did invent Barbie, but it's a different actor,
