While the story took place in Clarksdale, Mississippi, it was primarily filmed in Louisiana. The people of real-life Clarksdale don’t have access to movie theaters like a lot of us do. So they decided to bring the movie to the town by hosting a special screening at the Clarksdale Civic Auditorium. Hailee Steinfeld’s late maternal grandfather was half-African American and half-Filipino. In several interviews she said that her role made her spark a lot of questions she wishes she could ask him. Rob and Trin, meet Miles Caton. He grew up in a musical family, and he even sang on stage for Little Big Shots when he was younger. Prior to his big film debut, the now 20-year-old musician never really had any experience with acting or playing a guitar. A couple years ago, he was touring with H.E.R. When they were almost finished, Gabrielle convinced Miles to try out for a movie as a young guitarist. The most he knew what to do was how to entertain his family and make them laugh. So he went for it and Ryan Coogler was convinced he was perfect for the role of Preacherboy Sammie Moore. After getting the part, he took two months worth of guitar lessons and the rest is history. Old Man Sammie was portrayed by longtime musician Buddy Guy.

One of my favorite things is how the distinct color palettes of red for Stack and blue for Smoke... fully reflect & suit their personalities. Red for passion, warmth, blood... Blue for practicality, coolness, sadness of loss. Just one of so much symbolism here.

Even though I'm native this movie is special to me❤️

Que

That Soulja boy reference from rob was hilarious

FedeM

Wait, is that Jack O'Connell playing Remmick or do my eyes deceive me? Damn. Damn damn damn! Also, special mention to Michael B. Jordan's arms. Just saying

I absolutely love the use of music in this movie. It elevates this film to another level than just another vampire movie. It plays such an important role in the story itself with Sammy. The scene with the blending of music from different times is so unexpected and beautiful. This movie feels like a fresh take in this genre. I would definitely consider this horror but also say it feels bigger than that.

Kylegriffo

im happy that jack o'connell is finally getting the recognition he deserves

MarySoul

I loveee this movie. The time splitting scene while Sammie is playing, and all the roots and future sounds merged, blurring realms, with the perfect visuals, it is truly magical and I get the chills every single time I watch it. The voice of Miles Caton (Sammie)? so powerful, so transcendent. 🤌💋 (plus I’m so proud he found that 🔘😋🫣 Wummi Masaku is absolutely amazing in this role. Queen. Michael B. x2? who doesn’t like that? 😜🤤 Jack O’Connell’s rooted portrayal of the Irish vampire Remmick, was appealing and soulful, beautiful voice, wonderful dancing, even if he was the evil. Everyone was on point. 🔥

MarySoul

oh yeah, and I want a prequel following how the Choctaw dealt with Remmick before we see them in the movie. I think that would be awesome.

AnGeLuS

My birthday is on October 15th, so the evil comes a day later. I'm still lucky. 😅

Sela

That's all I wished for after the Choctaw presence was cut so short

ondraya

For sure one of my top movies of the year!

Michael Celia

Anyone who says this isn't a horror movie probably didn't watch the whole thing - it's most definitely horror. And the whole "blues (or rock 'n roll, or heavy metal) is the devil's music" trope is one that hasn't been killed to death. Plus, Michael B. Jordan playing twins...I'm in!

Abby

Rob says Aw about a Snake?🐍 it’s a reptile not a pet! 😆

Stephanie Bedworth

Definitely horror, but definitely so much more than that.

Nathan

If someone told me after this film that i was on drugs i would 100% believe them 😂 movie was bonkers and i love it

Jose Dominguez

This movie is so worth looking into more in depth because there’s so much history that you might miss like Remmick being so old that he was an Irish man when they were colonized. Such a beautiful movie depicting Black culture in my top 3 of movies this year easily

Terri

The "blue is the devil's music" is actually in many TV shows. They pretty much do this trope over and over in Supernatural. It's in The Originals too. Basically anything with supernatural lore has done this trope.

I’m glad you guys enjoyed it. I fell asleep a couple of times during this in the theater. This in my opinion was not enjoyable cause how many times can you have a film involving Racism and kept it entertaining, I’ve seen them all and it’s the same thing over and over there was nothing new in this film that I didn’t know already. Then they don’t really do anything interesting with the vampires. This film should have involved more of the vampires and how they operate and etc cause I see the potential with them, there was so many new things you could have done with this era involving them but nope. I’m a deep deep educated music head and that mix down of all the eras of “black music” was just terrible whoever they got to mix it did a very bad job…..also Ryan C. said this is a one and done project cause he wants it to be that way and even though I hated it I think he’s right about not doing anything else with this film. this definitely isn’t a horror film at all considering how long it took to actually get anything “scary” out of it. I would have preferred if they removed the vampires and etc and just made the film about them doing jobs for Capone in a racist era.

Best adventure

I’m glad watched it first time with you guys. I will never get tired of this kind of movie. Some stories are worth being told over and over again from different angles and in different forms. Some things don’t need to be embellished; the more obvious and direct they are, the more they resonate with people. I'm glad that the force of forced assimilation represented by vampires didn’t take up too much screen time. I’ve had enough of movies where the perpetrators are always the protagonists.

I was pleasantly surprised! I didn't know anything about this going in except for Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld and maybe vampires? Personally, this is the type of movie I would prefer for Halloween, it's not too light-hearted and not torture/splatter horror like the Saw franchise. All of my favorite Halloween rewatches are teen slashers from the 80s & 90s and their sequels and the Stephen King classics like; Carrie, Christine, Pet Sematary, It, etc. Not many modern supernatural/horror make it but this one is definitely being added to the yearly rewatch list. Wummi Masaku was PHENOMENAL!!!!! I was so mesmerized every time she was on screen! I really enjoyed the music. My favorite genre of music is rock and we won't get into sub-genres but so much of it is built on the back of blues & r&b. Im so glad it played a part in this. Im with Trin, I agree that music can pierce the veil between worlds. Music uniquely activates multiple areas of the brain at once — auditory, motor, emotional, and memory centers — which is why it can make us feel so much more deeply than almost anything else. Studies show it can release dopamine in our reward systems and even help people with Alzheimer’s recall memories. In a way, music does ‘pierce the veil’ between life and death: it connects us to memories, emotions, and people who are no longer here. It’s a direct line to the deepest parts of who we are.

WhatRabbitHole?

This is a masterful piece of cinema that did surprisingly well in the U.S., despite 77 million Americans voting against diversity, equity and inclusion. Ryan Coogler's choice to include Irish, Chinese and Choctaw culture was not accidental. He has immense respect for culture and all of these cultures were treated as subhuman at one point or another in America, a truth that will never go away, despite many wanting it too. If you make a movie about black people during the time of slavery or Jim Crow in America, the only way you can realistically portray that era without directly referencing or acknowledging racism or slavery, is to make that movie about black people in Africa. The Choctaw, nearly wiped out after extending a hand in welcome to European settlers, the Chinese when they were brought in to build the railroads, so many of them dying, buried where they fell, and the Irish, who, instead of a better life found themselves dying under horrible conditions building the Erie Canal among other things. Their bones were also buried where they died. Some not far from where I live. Things have gotten better for most, certainly for the Irish in America, not as much for the rest, very little for the 1st citizens. I mention these things because they represent so much of the foundation of the subtext in this movie. This is a movie about so many things. Good and evil, love, justice and injustice, music, culture, and, oh yeah, vampires. To say this is just about vampires is like saying The Walking Dead was just about zombies. Others have mentioned the scene where the dancing and music are accompanied by a narrative describing the cultural power of music that allows it to transcend time and space. Spectral African dancers, Chinese dancers, Choctaw dancers and white dancers for across time are with all the living dancers, whether the living can see them or not. And there so many questions posed about evil itself. The good brother let's the evil brother live because he loves him. That brother revisits the elderly Preacherboy (played by legendary blues man, Buddy Guy), because he loves him. Beyond that, cinematography, art direction, set direction, dialogue, music; all absolutely on point. Also, note actor Wunmi Mosaku as Annie, who played Agent B-15 in Loki. Nice to see her get to stretch in such a wonderful role. And Michael B. Jordan, as usual, not missing a beat. The only other vampire movie with this much depth is Only Lovers Left Alive with Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, the great John Hurt, Mia Wasikowski and Anton Yelchin, who we lost at such a young age. I know naming the actors is a bit spoilery but there is 0 chance this movie will ever get chosen here and there might be a few people here who are actually interested. Thanks R and T, and the community for sharing this among us. Peace.

Best review I've read about this movie. Thank you. Many people don't even try to interpret it properly or understand the metaphors. They only view and evaluate the film superficially.

WhatRabbitHole?

Thanks man. Yeah. Superficial movies should be watched superficially. This is not one of them. There is so much going on in this movie.

Tyrone Tyrone

The old Sammie at the end is real life "Buddy Guy" and he has won six Grammy Awards for both contemporary and traditional blues, a testament to a remarkable career that includes such classics as "Sweet Home Chicago," "Mustang Sally," "Stone Crazy," and "Let Me Love You Baby."

Tyrone Tyrone

The movie had very little publicity for it, making it so that a lot of people don't have a clue about it and that makes their reaction to it very genuine. I enjoyed a lot of the reactor's reactions more than the movie.

You went waaaay deeper than me and I appreciate that! I have mostly western European roots but somehow have some Hispanic and Native American as part of my ancestry. My grandpa was really into Native American history and our family tree so he mapped it back to Irish, Dutch, German, and unfortunately I dont know specifically what tribe. i wish i would have listened more when i was younger and he was still around, or even if I could find the book and cd he made (that's how long ago) I love learning about this kind of thing now!
